| jagggar07-30-04, 04:34 PM | Has anyone come up with rules for using LA buyoff with the savage progressions from Savage Species? I can understand how it would work if you've already got your LA, but not if you're adding levels just for LA while leveling up. Variants based on variants welcome. |

That's how I read it, anyway. That's how it works for Monster Classes, but that's not what was asked. Savage Progressions applies the monster class concept to templates. If you have not encountered Savage Progressions, check out this link (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/arch/sp) There are two key concepts that relate to Jagger's question. The diceless levels from Monster and Template classes. These "levels" are just level adjustments rather than class levels. Progressing through a Template class simply means that you acquire a level adjustement, and the abilities that produce it, through stages of experience, rather than all at once. After having acquired these level adjustments from monster and template classes, the rules for buyoff can be applied to them as normal. The multiclassing restriction of Monster Classes does not apply to Template Classes from Savage Progressions. It's up to you to decide whether or not to allow level adjustment buyoff before completing a Template Class. I suggest: not. (Remember too that diced levels from a monster class are racial hit die, and thus are not counted towards the level buyoff.) The effect of an acquired template on level adjustment buyoff. This is the tricky bit. Consider the case of a drow who aquires lycanthropy. A drow has a level adjustment of +2 and an afflicted lycanthrope gains a level adjustment of +2 for a total of +4. That's fine. You can figure out when the drow lycanthrope can start buying off the first level adjustment. The problem is deciding what to do if she had already started buying her drow level adjustment off before she was afflicted with lycanthropy. It's most likely that she nolonger has enough character class levels to be eligible to have bought of her first level adjustment. The simplest solution appears to be to sell it back. |
