| Arcade03-28-07, 01:06 PM | I was looking at the XP table and thought there was no reason to make things quite so complicated. It's not like it's that hard to figure out, but it could be easier. This rule doesn't add much to the game except some simplicity. Change XP to be 1000 XP/level. Now when starting a new campaign of 8th level characters, the DM can say you have 7000XP without looking in the book for what the scaling value should be. A 10th level character has 9000 XP, etc. Next, replace that big table in the DMG with this one: ECL-7 25 XP ECL-6 38 XP ECL-5 56 XP ECL-4 75 XP ECL-3 100 XP ECL-2 150 XP ECL-1 200 XP ECL 300 XP ECL+1 450 XP ECL+2 600 XP ECL+3 900 XP ECL+4 1200 XP ECL+5 1800 XP ECL+6 2400 XP ECL+7 3600 XP The only other thing to remember to do is divide XP components for magic items and spells by the character level. These come up less frequently than XP awards though, so I figured it's a good comporomise. I think one nice thing about this table is that you can use static rewards for items such as good role-playing or story events. For instance, good roleplaying is always worth 75 XP and finishing a major story arc is worth 300 XP. Psychologically though, many players enjoy the escalation of receiving ever greater amounts of XP. In any case, it's a minor change that won't affect anything in your game except some bookkeeping. |
| Xavon03-31-07, 11:38 PM | What is so hard to understand about Current Level times 1000? |
| stargate52503-31-07, 11:41 PM | Something's up with this. At those numbers you've got someone leveling up after 3 1/3 level-appropriate encounters. Isn't the actual number somewhere near 12-14? |
| JulesCARV03-31-07, 11:44 PM | Whoops. Never mind. |
| Archangel_Tyrael03-31-07, 11:54 PM | So a level 4 party that beats up on 10 gnolls, levels? |
| User512704-01-07, 12:07 AM | Well I'm assuming that one would also have to modify the XP/rewards tables so that people level at about 13 encounters. (13.3 iirc...) |

| Grizzled Gryphon04-02-07, 07:36 PM | seems fine to me, the only question is what do you divide the xp cost for magic items and spells by, to achieve the disired result?. As stated, you divide it by the character level. |
| starfire31104-03-07, 08:30 AM | As stated, you divide it by the character level. duh, for some reason, I got it into my head that it wouldn't work right, because as you level that would mean wish would get "cheaper" to cast, but that isnt the case at all, it would really stay the same "cost" but since 1 XP at level 20 is worth more than 1 xp at level 17, it will take less of the level 20 xp to pay for wish than the level 17 xp. |
