Size increase for gnome with major giant bloodline? [Archive] - Wizards Community

06-11-04, 07:03 PM In the description of the giant bloodline it states that characters with the bloodline "tend to be massive for their race". Is it safe to assume that a gnome (or any other small humanoid) with a major storm giant bloodline would "move up a peg" on the size charts (because, after all, isn’t a "massive" gnome really just a dwarf with a big noise and a good sense of hygiene)?

I ask this out of complete curiosity (and as a possible character idea) and as such this question leads me to another: how did a gnome end up with the blood of a storm giant in his veins? The only thing I can come up with is an easily impressed female giant, an adventurous male gnome, and a polymorph spell.

06-12-04, 01:06 AM That'll more then likely be a DMs call, it doesnt say you increase in size, so you wouldnt.
But if your dm thinks you have good debate he just might let you.

And as for how gnome got giant bloodline, some questions are better left unanswered

06-13-04, 10:55 PM Half giants in the XPH have a powerful build, but they are still medium creatures. Your massive gnome isn't even a half-giant, and just has a little bit of giant ancestry in the bloodline, so she does not even get that.The SRD sais:
• Powerful Build: The physical stature of half-giants lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category larger.

Whenever a half-giant is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the half-giant is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him.

A half-giant is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A half-giant can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category.

06-14-04, 12:39 AM Well a giant blooded Gnome would be a bit bigger, right? a gnome's max height (based on the PH) is around 3'8'', and an Elf's minimum height is about 4'7''. that's a difference of about 11 inches between a tall gnome and a short elf. A dwarf would be even shorter (3'11'') but is very heavily build.

Although that information is only semi-relavent at best, I think that looking at size as a function of height could be somewhat helpful. If you think an abnormally large Gnome would be comparable to a short or normal sized medium creature, then go ahead and give it to him.

06-14-04, 10:06 AM I have to agree with Greyman. If a true breeding Human/Giant hybrid is still a medium creature, a Gnome with a Giant for his great-great-grandfather would not be medium.

The bloodlines are supposed to be subtle anyway. If a bloodline granted such drastic alterations of the base creature (Such as unusual size or wings or an extra head) they would be templates.

06-14-04, 04:12 PM Unless the bloodline says he actually changes size, he wouldn't. I'd probably affix his height and weight to the maximum possibilities on the chart in the PHB, though. He'd be a darn big gnome ... but he's still a gnome.
