| Darok05-06-04, 03:51 PM | So, with the release of XPH, a feat came along that grants 5 skill points (one-time). My friends and I have always played with a feat equalling 6 skill points, and vice versa, but I think 5 is a better number. What would you see as the pros/cons of being able to buy feats with skill points and vice versa? A High Int would be very nice for fighters... |
| Salla05-06-04, 03:55 PM | My only fear with that would be dorks who don't drop *anything* into skill points and solely purchase feats. I have enough trouble with a couple of people who play fighters with no personality or interest in doing anything besides fighting ... |
| Darok05-06-04, 03:56 PM | aye, that would be a fear. You could make more use of skills to balance that though. |

| Nivek Loneshadow05-07-04, 05:39 PM | I agree with the above posts. Mostly the rogue example because shows that some chars will still have plenty of skills and extra feats. However the idea is interesting. Maybe limit the number or percentage of skill points they can use towards Feats. |
| trapspringer05-09-04, 08:43 PM | The only trick is having enough class skills. Of course, there's that feat in UA which grants a class skill. A human expert with his focus some where other than intelligence... |

Heh ... depends on your players, Lina. I have one guy who, when playing a rogue, laments not having enough skill points to go around (because he wants to put skill points into EVERY class skill instead of focussing). |
| Nick Soapdish05-10-04, 04:02 PM | I don't see a fair way to do it without completely re-doing the skill points and feats of each class. At 6 skill points per feat - about as high as a fighter could possibly afford, you could have a ranger that gets just as many feats as a fighter AND still gets more skills (thanks to his skill points of the off levels). Or what about 1st level? Start your prospective fighter off as a rogue. Convert almost all of your skill points into feats and get 5 or even more free feats and then multi-class into fighter for the remainder of your levels. Obviously some of this can be controlled by restricting the number of converted feats. Maybe it would work as a fighter-only ability, but then it makes fighters even more of a quick dip for multi-classers to pick up a few quick feats. |
| DragonsArt05-10-04, 04:09 PM | The DM has control of the skill-less adventurer.... start making alot of places that require swimming, climbing, etc. MAKE them use their skills.... Make smoke bombs that give a concealment bonus based on Spot checks... Make lairs that have the treasure in an underground spring, requiring the character to swim to it... Have some animal eat their rations and make them use the survival skill... Activating items could require certain knowledge skills.... Boots of striding and leaping could require a certain skill in jumping... Things like that should make the characters want skills... |
| askala305-10-04, 05:01 PM | This reminds me of the ultra-broken 2nd edition Skills and Powers based rogues/bards. While I won't go into detail, think of it only much worse. My suggestions are to: :b: Not allow it (it is a big can of worms after all) :b: limit the number of times (once every other level) that the char can do this. :b: Add skill requirements to more feats, and be skill check heavy as a DM. :b: Make high skill point classes have to spend more skill points to get the feat. A simple start would be base skills points from the class +1 or 5, whichever is higher. (i.e. 9 for rogue). I kinda like the 4th idea, but in my campaign I'm going to use the 1st. |
| Necron01305-10-04, 06:38 PM | I think the best way to limit trading skills in for feats is to make lots of skill-based encounters. Let me see any Hack-and-Slash fighter survive ten minutes in any of my campaigns, with political intrigue, traps around every corner, and BBEGs that know when to fight and when to run down mazes of twisty passages (listen DC 20, no problem for the average adventurer). |
