Leading to situations where the dm has to be very careful in the detials he reveals. Generally most dm's aren't happy to let the players catch his super monster with his pants down. Similarly players cry foul if you succesfully poison them in their sleep. And why are all dc's the same? One cliff face could be incredibly perilous, another mild. -Skills can be use retroactively at any time (except in response to anothers skill check). -Skills can be used to any end suggested with a dm vito (rewarding ingenuity, but not going crazy), and used similarly in opposing checks. -Skill check results overide metaknowledge. -All skill checks are opposed checks, typically relating to the target creature, otherwise an obstacle has a skill mod according to it's cr, roughly cr +10. For example gather info with a target in mind is oppossed by the target creatures disguise, for general info about the city, the figurehead of the area or community in question would oppose with a relevent skill check (or just make up the number). -When two characters oppose each other in a battle of wits whoever has the highest skill mod may go first. -Pass - normal result, mild success, you may get the surprise round etc. -+5 subtle success, you may instead try again with a different skill to get a better result. -+10 extreme success, you may stab the wizard in his bed while he's sleeping etc. Comments? |
| AT-AT Assault06-28-06, 12:00 AM | -Skill check results overide metaknowledge. All GMs should automatically do this. Just because the player knows a Gold Dragon is astronomically unlikely to be evil doesnt mean the character should be calm at the sight of one. I suggest you check out the D20 Modern and D20 Star Wars games to see how skills can be utilized to a higher degree. I honestly cant explain the situation in one post without making a largely incoherent post. |
