"Eggs in one Basket" Sorcerers metamagic their spells differently. They draw spell levels (so at 4th level a sorcerer can metamagic a second level spell (let's say, maximize) and loses 4 1st level spells, 4 hp (Because of 4 levels in the maximize field), 1 temporary strength and 1 constitution (returns after resting and gaining spells back) one time per spell (so, one huge all eggs in one basket maximized, enlarged, empowered, silenced fireball is only 1 str and 1 con). Reminder: Losing too much strength or constitution kills you. Equation: Metamagic'd additional Levels = lost HP + -1 str and con Basically, if the Sorcerer has a metamagic feat, instead of making the spell be of a higher slot, he can burn other spell slots to metamagic the spell. (Ex. Extend Bulls Strength, have the feat Extend and use up a L2 Bulls Strength and L1 slot, lose 1 HP, 1 Str, and 1 Con). Seems very cool, but I can see enemies using it very often to Maximize and/or Quicken spells the first round of combat (Fireball anyone?). This ability is tempered by the Wizard's ability to counterspell more effectively. When counterspelling, a wizard does not expend the spell that is used to counter. The wizard must ready an action, and lose his next action. I am unclear if Dispell Magic will work in this way as well (need to ask). Is it overpowered, or am I just being crazy? (By the way, our party has a battle sorcerer with the Draconic feats from Complete Arcane, and I am a Gish- Fighter/Wizard/Spellsword. . .neither of us have built our characters to utilize our enhanced abilities to metamagic or counterspell, respectively). |
