im thinking of using spell-points in a forgotten realms campaine in planning. to my mind, the system does seem more "magical" then the traditional spell-slots system. though a few things stand out to me.

SP system does make casters more powerful then normal, does this infringe on the usefullness of other non-magic classes? if so, what are some ideas on how to fix this? ideas i have had are:

-Vitializing. though my vertsion is somewhat more severe then whats presented in UA. in my version casters are fatiigued at 1/3 of their SP, and exsausted at 2/3.

- the Wizard, Druid and Cleric dont get to "prep" all of their normal spell for casting. insteady you subtract 1 from each of their normal "spells per day" collum, starting with the second highest level they can cast, to get how many they can "ready" per day.

it also renders the Sorcerer class compleatly redundant. sence there main shtick was being able to cast spontainiosly, and now -every- caster has that ability. their pretty much left in the cold. last time i checked this board the debate was still raging on how to fix this. im wondering if the best thing to do though, would be to strike the Sorcerer from the class lists. as i understand it, the sorcerer was ment as a replacement Wizard class for those who didnt like the "fire and forget" system.

i just got done looking through the battle sorcerer. it actualy does a damn good job of evening out the sorcer class. trading martial ability for what they lost in spell-casting power.

though this still leaves the issue of balance between the casters and non-casters.

Here are three options if you are going to use spell points:

One, you drop the sorcerer. There really isn't a reason to play them if wizards have the option of casting spontaneously.

Two, all sorcerers use the battle sorcerer variant, but with none of the trade-offs in spells/day or spells known.

Finally, only sorcerers and bards use the spell point system, while preparation spellcasters are left with using spell slots. This is the solution that I'm going with.
