After talking to my players, we have decided to try out the Spell Point system out of Arcana Unearthed for our campaign. (avg of 13th level) I was wondering if any fellow DM’s had some advice on possible pitfalls or problems that have occurred using this system. I’ve run one session so far—The players who run spell casters seemed to like it, except for the added bookwork (I would have to occasionally remind them to keep track of the points—understandable since it was the first time they used the system.)

I personally like the system, but it underpowers spontaneous spellcasters (or overpowers non-spontaneous spellcasters), because of the insignificant difference between spell points. I made a little fix to the system. Here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=621195).

I give a number of spell points equal to the total of all spell slots added together. I know its alot more than they get by the spell point system but I havent had any problems with it.

I recommend taking a look here (http://creationforge.blogspot.com)

There's a really good variant spell casting system at the bottom of the page.

Tsk, tsk. The difference in spellpoints is based on the fact that spontaneous casters like the sorcerer need fewer spellpoints to augment their abilities than the wizard. A sorcerer's base fireball, for isntance, will do a base of 6d6 damage for 5 spellpoints while a wizard's will do only 5d6--a seemingly insignificant difference that adds up over time.

This would make spellcasters REALLY overpowered, as it gives them a HUGE advantage with no penalties or disadvantages at all. Wizards of the Coast tried to make every class balanced (more or less), so this would make spellcasters broken.

This little advantage is useless compared to the enoromus advantage that wizards and other prepairing spellcaster gain with the spontaneous casting. Not to mention the minimum diference between their spellpoints and the sponaneous spellcasters' ones.

One thing that concearns me with the spell point system, is the amount of high-level spells a caster has at his/her disposal. For example, A 14th level wizard with a decent INT score can cast Power-word Blind 14+ times a day. Granted, at 14th level you will be facing more baddies with spell resistance and higher HP. but has any DM had issues with casters being able to cast high level spells this many times?
