Hello all,

For my campaign, I decided to offer my players the option of playing spontaneously casting divine spellcasters. Therefore, I'm developing two new base classes, which relate to their "original" class like the sorcerer relates to the wizard (for the record, in our group the sorcerer gets bonus feats like a wizard).

Do you think it would be balanced to make the following changes:

switch the Druid/Cleric's spells per day table for the sorcerer's
remove the ability to spontaneously convert spells into healing spells or summon nature's ally.
limit their spells known to the number given on the sorcerer's spells known table, with the first spell known for each level automatically being "Cure [x] Wounds" (for the cleric) or "Summon Nature's Ally" (for the druid)
only one of the cleric's domain spells is treated as a known spell, and it is castable once per day.
keep all other class features identical

Thanks for your opinions,

Honestly, I'm a very big fan of the listed spontaneous divine caster variant. I take particular issue with your listed change "only one of the cleric's domain spells is treated as a known spell, and it is castable once per day"; I consider a spontaneous caster who has to keep track of which spells were already cast to be counter-intuitive. People play spontaneous casters because there's less bookkeeping. Other than that, I think your variation is fine.

The limiting of the domain spells was done te prevent clerics casting wizard spells on their domain spell list more than they should be allowed to (the current system only lets them cast their domain spells once/day)
Perhaps changing known domain spells to spell-like abilities usable once/day would solve your issue? ;)

Also, do you have any problem with their spellcasting stat still being Wisdom? I think changing it to Charisma (as the wizard -> sorcerer) would make certain divine feats a bit too strong...

The Favored Soul in the Complete Divine is the spontaneous casting version of the Cleric....

And the Spirit Shaman (also in the complete divine) is the spontaneous casting version of the Druid...

both are good solid classes that provide more flavor than just a convert of the way they cast spells...

Sadly enough, we don't have a copy of Complete Divine to our disposal... :( (If we would, we'd have used those classes you suggested)

Favored Soul is nice and all, but I greatly prefer the spontaneous Cleric. Getting spells one level earlier is very nice, especially with the Healing domain.

Besides, Favored Soul gives weapon specialization, which is a concept repugnant to the type of Cleric I would play (Cloistered, that is).
