I think that the Imbued Staff option from this months dragon (#338?) would be a really good fit for the item familiar feat.

It doesn't seem like it would make a caster that much more powerfull since it can normally be taken with any item and still have a normal familiar too.

Opinions?

I have been absolutely itching to read this article, but unfortunately my issue of Dragon #338 has not come in the mail, yet.

I understand that no one can list the abilities and features of the article, but can someone let me know, generally, how it works? I figure that the imbued staff doesn't grant you the same things that a normal familiar would over the course of levelling up... What kinds of things does it do?

Thanks.

better Staff HP/Hardness, +3 enhancemnt and a +1 special ability on both ends, you can scry on it, you can call it from anywhere on the same plane and it teleports to you, you can heal the staff instead of getting natural healing for a day, light 3/day(possable unlimited duration) and 1 Cantrip 1/day- thats what I remember of the top of my head, this is all over 20 levels. However if your staff is lost you loose 500xp per ctr level. There are also a handfull of feats that give additional bonuses, like-
wis to AC when casting Defensively
sacrifice a spell slot to gain a spell-like-ability 3/day
and the ability to recharge your staff if enchanted like normal at a 5to1 ratio
