Okay... I've noticed that D&D can often rely VERY heavily on builds over tactics. There are only so many things a character can do on the battlefield, chiefly move attack and cast spells.

... So I thought of a temporary solution: give people all the tactical feats they are eligible for!

Conan the RPG d20 does exactly that: there are some options one can perform in battle as long as he has the requirements without "purchasing them".

The best way to spice up combat is to use Stunts and Zones as described in Iron Heroes. Basically with Stunts you can say for example "I run up the Ogre's club and attack his head for extra damage!". Then you'd go right, that's a DC20 Balance check for example and if you succeed get a +4 damage or something (not sure on the specifics, just going off memory). Zones are areas of the battlefield you can interact with like siege engines and other such things. Think of rolling barrels into enemies, dropping heavy loads from above, etc.

It really makes combat exhilerating again.

i think i might use that...
Anyway, I've always kind of favored a unique set of moves... I always give my bad***** villains something surprising... monkey grip, throw anything, neraph throw/charge, etc.
It's always fun to deal in signature moves and styles as opposed to a generic "power attack".
But you still need practical things like spell focus/weaon focus/ power attack/ dodge/expertise etc... So tactics gets reduced to charging, flanking, bull rushing, and maybe one or two other options...

but both ideas definitely help in getting away from that
