I really like the concept of Bloodlines, but I seem to be missing something, as the cost seems too steep. Taking a level in your bloodline seems to be underpowered, considering you get 1 bonus (as opposed to a normal class' various bonuses), as well as the penalty for not taking these levels.

Maybe I don't understand how it works, please tell me:

- For my character to obtain the highest bonus of a major bloodline, would s/he have to take 20 levels  of their racial bloodlines first?

- Does taking a level in your bloodline cost the same amount as a normal class?

...?

You never have to take more than three levels of bloodline. Ever.

Those little tables are the benefits you get at a given character level, not a given bloodline level. Bloodline levels are essentially just a graduated level adjustment.

Well, for starters, you have to realize that there is a maximum of 3 levels of bloodline, not 20. The benefits are gained automatically when you reach the character level indicated on the chart. You just have to take levels of the bloodline before a certain point in order to keep gaining those abilities. Take a look in more detail.
