Targeting Specific Body Parts? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I attempted to make a system so players could target specific body parts of opponents if they wished. (I'm not sure if this has really been done before or not, but oh well.) I would only invoke this system if the player tried to target a specific body part. Here are the rules.

AC Bonus: An AC bonus is applied because the player is trying to target a specific body part, not just what's most open to them at the time, not to mention these body parts happen to be smaller or harder to hit, or more heavily protected and guarded by the target, (Like the head). The AC bonus is applied to any opponent aware of the attacker, where as this AC bonus is halved when the opponent is flat footed, (Hence the AC bonus in parentheses).

Primary HP: The system of Primary and Secondary HP is a balancing system to make it a greater risk but greater reward type of game play when targeting a specific body part. Each body part has a Primary Hp of it's own and once this is depleted the target must make a save (Fortitude DC equal to the damage incurred on only this body part's primary HP + 10.) Now, the Primary HP of a body part nor the damage taken from injuring this HP incurs any negatives on the character's actual HP. In other words, the target's Real HP can not be depleted only if the Primary HP of a body part is hurt. Now if the opponent fails the previous save he invokes the Primary Effect, (The first effect listed. For "Head" it would be "Unconsciousness") and the damage that surpasses the Primary HP total gets carried over as damage to the Secondary Hp score. However, no damage is dealt to the Secondary Hp score until the character fails the Save for the Primary Effect. After failing, the damage left over immediately applies to the Secondary Hp score.

Secondary Hp: Secondary Hp is where you're really doing some damage, it follows the same rules above but invokes the second penalty listed once this Second save is failed. (However, when calculating the save you do not add the damage from both Primary and Secondary HP scores together, but you add only the damage dealt to the Secondary Hp score.) All damage dealt to the Secondary Hp score carries over to the character's Actual Hp Total (Thus a severe wound to the Upper Torso could cause death just from depleting a character to -10 Hp.) And since damage that exceeds the Primary Hp's total immediately effects the Secondary Hp after failure of the Primary Save, it's possible a character could have the secondary Effect apply because of one action. Because of this, the Attacker can choose to not deal any damage to the target's secondary Hp before making the attack, so that even if the damage dealt would exceed the Primary Hp and effect the secondary it is ignored. (This allows the strong fighter to sneak up to a guard and club their head in with the hilt of a sword.)

Body Part / AC Bonus / Primary Hp / Secondary Hp / Effects

Head / +5 (+2) / HD x3 / HD+Con Mod+6 / Unconsciousness/Death

Eye / +9 (+4) / HD / HD+Con Mod +1 / -2 Spot/ -4 or
Blindness

Ear / +7 (+3) / HD / HD+Con Mod +1 / -2 Listen/ -4 Listen or Deaf

*Arm / +2 (+1) / HD x2 / HD+Con Mod+2 / -2attack/Loss of Hand

*Hand / +4 (+2) / HD / HD+Con Mod+2 / Disarm or -2 attack/Loss of Hand

Upper Torso / +1 (+1) / HD x3 / HD+Con Mod+4 / Fatigued/Begin
Suffocating

Lower Torso / +1 (+1) / HD x3 HD+ConMod+6 / Sickened/Nauseated

Leg / +2 (+1) /HD x2 / HD+ConMod+4 / -5 Base Speed, Can’t run/ -10 Base Speed, moving takes a standard action. Or character stays prone.

*= Obviously once the arm is removed, dealing damage and targeting the hand would most likely be uneffective.

Well thank you for reading this and I would like any feed back on fairness and balancing issues of these rules I attempted to assemble. Another thing is, if there are additional body parts you would like to see added, I would like the statistics for that as well. (I was thinking about how to do the Heart, but wasn't sure on how to come about it. Maybe something where the AC bonus doesn't increase no matter if the character is flat footed or not, and it doesn't have a primary effect? I don't know.) Well, thanks again...
