After several very load and headache filled discussions with some of my fellow players, I thought I would ask the oppinion of the boards here for verification.

When using a gestalt progression, how does ECL work?

My understanding and reasoning was that an ECL 1 template would simply act like a class, taken and combined with another class at a level.

The other argument was that the ECL was void of the gestalt rule, and didn't count.

Example.

A gestalt drow [ECL +2] cleric would look somthing like this.

1.Drow/cleric
2.Drow/cleric
3.Cleric/x
4.Cleric/x

Where as the other reasoning implies-

1.drow
2.drow
3.cleric/x
4.cleric/x

Simply put, this is causing many headaches for my group. Anyone able to help?

I don't /think/ there is an official ruling.. Just people arguing it should be one way or the other.

The DM has the final say in your campaign.

Personally, I am for option 1.
monster/class
monster/class
class/class

But that is merely my opinion :)
Since Savage Species call them "monster classes" i tend to think of them as just that.
A class.

I second the first view.

To say that LA must be taken seperately from your gestalt levels is to say that one LA is equivialent to one level of gestalt. If you really believe that LA is just as powerful as one gestalt level, then that should mean that you believe it is more powerful than a normal, single class level and you should be going through your MM and increasing the LA values there.

The arguement for having LA come before gestalt levels is that you don't get HD, BAB, Saves, or Skill Points from LA levels and it would be unbalancing to let the character gain them. The flaw in this arguement is that a wizard doesn't get a d10 or +1 BAB (as opposed to the fractional +1/2) or good Fort and Ref saves or 6 skill points per level, so why should a Wizard//Ranger get these things?

In my gestalt game i will allow someone to start at 1st level taking racial level adjustments as 1/2 of their gestalt level. They will have to take the racial level adjustments HD/Skill Points/Attack Bonus/and saves as their primary until the race levels are totally paid off.
