Those of you that don't watch Inuyasha have no idea what I'm talking about.

Those that do, be creative. Don't just say one or the other, write it out.

Well...

I think it's spelt Tetsuyaiga, but I'm not sure.

It is most definitely a lengendary weapon. If I had to stat it out I would take the Dragon fang, change all the attack bonuses to function on Oni (Oriental Adventures (Demons)), make the energy resistance function against acid only, and give it the ability to cast a spell X times per day that simulates the Kizu No Kama (Wound of the Wind (Wind Scar)) and Bakurayu.

You're both close - it's actually Tetsusaiga. In Japanese, though, the 'u' is barely pronounced so it sounds more like Tetssaiga.

I believe it's Tessaiga, no additional t. But I may be wrong.

It's certainly not an item familiar, for several reasons: it's not a family heirloom, it's not a bonded weapon, it doesn't grow more powerful by bonding with the user (if you think about it, Inuyasha's brother can do much more spectacular things that the hero does with it as soon as he wields it).

So, here's my humble writup for a non-epic version (I'm not a huge fan of the anime, but I would say that the characters are between lvl 10 and lvl 15, and Tessaiga would be an epic weapon).

Tessaiga, The Demon Slayer

Tessaiga is a legendary weapon whose powers are unlocked by taking levels in the Battle Scion PrC. Follow the guidelines on pag. 162-164 of Unearthed Arcana.

Requirements:
Any character can wield Tessaiga as a +1 keen katana. That is what Tessaiga normally looks like - an exquisite katana with green and black inserts, and an extremely sharp blade.

However, in the hands of a battle scion that fulfills the following criteria, Tessaiga becomes a huge and unwieldy falchion, retaining its +1 and keen properties (Huge +1 Keen Falchion, dmg: 2d6+1, crit: 15-20/x2, weight 16 lb). The standard penalties for a weapon wielded with Monkey Grip still apply (-2 to attack rolls).

Base Attack Bonus: +8
Feats: Monkey Grip (Complete Warrior), Power Attack (PHB)
Skills: Concentration 5 ranks
Special: Favorite enemy (Outsider, evil).
Special: Non-outsider. No outsider can wield tessaiga, as the blade is designed to be the bane of demons and similar creatures. However, half-blood (like half-fiends) can wield the blade thanks to their mortal blood.

Attributes:
Tessaiga has the following attributes:
Hardness/Hit Points: katana 20/45, falchion 20/65
Caster Level: 20th
Value: to any character, the sword appears as a +1 keen katana, and is worth as such.

Special abilities:
Tessaiga provides a number of special abilities to his wielder, depending on his character lvl in the battles scion PrC:

- : Keen
Lvl 1: Bane (Outsiders, evil)
Lvl 2: Favored Power Attack (Outsiders, evil), Experience
Lvl 3: Enanchment bonus +2 (+4 against Outsiders, evil)
Lvl 4: Brilliant Energy Blade
Lvl 5: Enanchment bonus +3 (+5 against Outsiders, evil)
Lvl 6: Greater Bane (Outsider, evil)
Lvl 7: Enanchment bonus +4 (+7 against Outsiders, evil)
Lvl 8: Collision Power
Lvl 9: Enanchment bonus +5 (+8 against Outsiders, evil)
Lvl 10: Positive Energy Burst

Keen (Su): Tessaiga is extremely sharp in both forms; it obtains the Keen property described on the DMG.
Bane (Outsiders, evil) (Su): when wielded by a battle scion and in falchion form, Tessaiga acquires the Bane special ability outlined in the DMG (+2 to the enanchment bonus, +2d6 to damage against evil outsiders). In short, against evil outsiders the damage shifts from 2d6+1 to 4d6+3.
Favored Power Attack (Ex): at 2nd level, a character wielding Tessaiga in falchion form obtains the feat Favored Power attack, as described in the Complete Warrior. Against his favored enemies, while wielding Tessaiga with two hands he obtains a +3 bonus to damage for every point of penality he decides to assign to his attack roll.
Experience (Ex): at 2nd lvl, the battle scion has learned how to balance Tessaiga in falchion form. He can ignore the standard penalities for using Monkey Grip (-2 to attack rolls). He still needs two hands to wield the blade.
Brilliant Energy Blade (Su): at 4° lvl, a character wielding Tessaiga may decide to take 5 point of nonlethal damage to unleash the energy stored in the sword. The blade is then shrouded in white, positive energy. This power is a variant of the Brilliant Energy property described in the DMG, and it works in the same way expect for the following modifications: the metallic blade does not become energy, so the blade still deals damage to non-living matter; however, the blade doesn't ignore armor bonuses (like a Brilliant Energy weapon); instead, it ignores half of the natural armor bonus of its target. Also, the blade deal an extra 1d6 of positive energy damage.
Activating this ability is a move equivalent action; the power remains active for a number of rounds equal to the battles scion Charisma modifier +3 (much like a barbarian rage). After using this ability, a battle scion has to wait for 1d4 rounds before he can take 5 points of lethal damage and activate it again.
Greater Bane (Outsiders, evil) (Su): at 6th lvl, the bane bonuses change from +2/+2d6 to +3/+3d6.
Collision (Su): at lvl 8°, Tessaiga is considered to have the Collision special ability as described in the Expanded Psionic Handbook (+5 to damage rolls).
Positive Energy Burst (Su): a battle scion of lvl 10 can use this ability 3/day. As a full round action, he can unleash a shockwave of positive energy in a 120 ft. cone. All creatures in the area suffer 1d6 positive energy damages per class lvl of the battle scion (usually 10d6), plus 1d6 for every point fo Charisma bonus of the Scion. A Reflex saving throw (DC 10 + half the battle scion HD + his charisma modifier) halves the damage. Creatures with the good subtype take only half damage (1/4 on a successfull saving throw); creatures with the evil subtype take 1,5 times the damage (3/4 on a successfull save).

That's it. Much like in the anime, the blade is devastating against demons (it ends being +8 to hit, dealing - with brilliant energy on - 5d6 + 13 + 1d6 with each swing, crit 15-20, power attack x3). Not completely useless against other creatures, but as long as the campaign doesn't revolve completely around evil outsiders, the character won't feel overpowered.

That could be a valid reading of it, as the "tsu" character/sound followed by a consonant sound can often be changed to a double-consonant (for instance - "Tetsu" + "Ken" might become "Tekken").

At least, that's the way it's spelt in the italian version of the anime... I never saw it written.

Actually Inu's brother alos has a powerful weapon that was given to him by their father. In some ways it is more powerful than the Tessaiga. Both weapons also seem to grow more powerful as the brothers discover more about themselves and the weapon. I think both weapons should be Legendary weapons, but that the class levels are interchangeable for these weapons.

I never followed the anime long enough to discover that....

IIRC:
Inu-Yasha's sword was spelled Tetsusaiga on one of the episode introduction screens. Anyway they have said that tetsusaiga "has the power to slay 100 demons with a single blow" or something like that.
His brother, Sesshomaru, has Tenseiga which cannot be used to kill but has "the power to save 100 lives". I guess it is like the Tetsusaiga's Wind Scar in reverse.

In response to Visanideth: I like your PrC. The only Issue is that I thought positive energy damage healed living creatures and harmed undead.

In regards to your comment:
it's not a family heirloom,
It is a sword given to him from his father and is made out of said father's tooth. How is that not an heirloom? Is it because it doesn't go back 50 generations?

Well, as I said, I did not follow the whole series. From what I had seen, I got the idea that A) Tessaiga was a very old and powerful artifact and B) it wasn't directly related to Inuyasha or Sessoumaru.
But my knowledge of the anime more or less stop at the episode when Sessou implants a mortal arm to be able to wield the blade.

I still prefer the legenday weapon mechanics; but I would be interested to see someone else's writup. As I said, I'm probably a profane writing of something he barely knows.
