| oberyn02-02-05, 03:41 AM | hey all of you readers of one of the best series in my opinion. i was just trying to think of what kind of changes would have to be made to make the D&D system work for a world based around GGRM's books. first of all casters are out in this low magic world. but i was thinking the ones that seem key (like the ability to assume anyones face) could be made into a set of feats so that every class could take thier own path with it. like there could be a set of feats first and second ones give you a bonus on disguise while the third wold let you use Alter Self as a spell like ability three times a day. |
| hiryuu02-02-05, 03:59 AM | Or you could wait a bit for Guardians of Order's Game of Thrones d20 books, see how they handle it. I think the preview's up on their site. |
| oberyn02-02-05, 04:21 AM | yes iti s but im afraid im a bit impatient and most new systems i dont like as much as D&D granted i like the idea of combat being "grittier" as they put it but i generaly like the D&D system i would just like to make a world with those books as its base for D&D not play those books down to the letter. |

I would suggest normal HP progression through level five, after which d4 and d6 HP characters get one hp per level, d8 characters get 2 per level, d10 and d12 3 per level. An alternative is to go with wounds = character's CON, never changing. Characters also gain vitality which is lost as the character is "hit", representing increasing fatigue and inability to defend. Critical hits go straight to wounds but aren't multiplied. Give a bonus to characters ganging up: a character's AC takes a cumulative -1 for each charater after the first engaged in melee with him. This stacks with flanking for characters who are also flanking. Improved uncanny dodge still eliminates flanking, but not the AC penalty. Successful saves always mean half effect. Even saving versus nastiness will hurt. BAB cap: max BAB is 10 for all characters. Just some thoughts. |
| oberyn02-02-05, 05:47 PM | the vitality wounds system I think would work quite. The system you proposed where hit point progression slows at 5th level I don't think is a very good idea. My reason is that at High levels it would be insanely easy for a high level fighter to cut through two or three same level characters a round. There are also characters that can take an insane beating and keep moving. Take The Mountian That Rides as an example. In his fight with the red viper of dorn he has a spear in his gut and still shoves his hand through the vipers face. This system I think makes the damadge monkey to powerfull. Maxing BAB at ten does not make sense from a realistic or story stand point. There are examples of people who clearly have an insane bonus to hit in Martins Books. the save for half isnt such a good hit when theres no magic so i like it |
| the_narrator02-02-05, 05:58 PM | man, philosophool, those are rediculous changes, no offense. basically it changes characters to really powerful commoners. i don't think it's neccessary to change the mechanics like that. your way makes the characters like most characters in books, including forgotten realms and such. this is DnD, where all the characters are pretty much super-human, as opposed to normal people, like the books. i think he may have been asking for stuff more along the lines of changing abilities. anyways, here's what i'd do. the world isn't no-magic, just very low. from what i gathered, long ago there was far more magic in the world, but somehow it kinda got forgotten or something. there are still wizards, apparently, though what the can do exactly is unclear. devine magic exists, showcased by the Red Priest that keeps bringing Lord Beric back to life. i'm not sure, but the woman who travels around with Lord Stannis is also a priestess of the fire god. don't quite remember, though. so pretty much you're looking at nerfing the cleric spell list, but keep the healing ones. also, there's druidic magic as well, but so far it seems pretty limited to communicating with animal companions. then there's the rangers. obviously, they have no spells, but the varient for spell-less ranger found in CW works very well. if you're wondering, the rangers are the offensive part of the black watch. there's also necromancy, it seems, with the ghouls and such that keep attacking the wall. hopefully that'll be explained in the next book. here's a bit of an outline if you plan on statting out some of the main characters: Jon Snow: mid-level druid/ ranger. he can communicate with his wolf fine, but he doesn't seem to have the same control Bran does. Bran Stark: high-level druid. he can communicate with his wolf, but can also take control of it, as well as other people (he did this to Hodor when they were in the castle on the lake, surrounded by wildings. Arya Stark: swashbuckler. you can't argue for her being anything else. the rest of the important ones are either really obviouis, or dead. i hope this helps you out some. i don't have a PhB in front of me right now, so i can't go about giving more detailed stuff that that. plus, i haven't read the books in a while. |
| oberyn02-02-05, 06:39 PM | i dont think any players should be a cleric seeing as far as weve seen in the three books only two people comand divine magic. weve seen some minor arcanr things and then theres the undying ones. it would have to be a spellless druid. i thinkt he only way to do bran would be to make a shifter class but instead of shifting you take over other people bodys. this would allow it to be more powerfull since he could still have his main body killed. maybe in the beginning he would have to bond with the animal and maybe only 1 or 2 but then he could bond with people and eventally crate forced links? as for jhon seems to me hed just be a ranger seieng as he would get a companion then too. arya always seemed more of a swashbuckling rogue than anything. |

Do you want a D&D version or a d20 version? |
| oberyn02-05-05, 11:55 PM | sorry bout that i have a tendency to accidentally twist my words into a tripwire. but i want it for the D&D system. |
| iluvdnd4702-06-05, 12:21 AM | Pick up a copy of Dragon Magazine #307. It tells you how to convert the series to DND. It also has a poster map of Westeros and stats for some of the main characters such as Jon Snow, Sandor Clegane, Stannis Baratheon, Mellisandre etc. |
| Ranger REG02-06-05, 03:48 AM | sorry bout that i have a tendency to accidentally twist my words into a tripwire. but i want it for the D&D system. Okay. Try lowering the Massive Damage Threshold value. In the DMG the base value is 50. Lower it down to character's Con score or base 10. If an attack's damage exceed the threshold value, the character must make Fort Save vs. DC 15 (or higher; DM's discretion) or his HP drops to -1 and dying (or HP drops to 0 if damage is nonlethal). Also, look for Torn Asunder book from Bastion Press. It expands on critical hits and injuries. |
| Ellone02-18-05, 11:59 AM | divide each level in 3, so a 20th level character would be approximatly a level 7 DD character BAB and save wise with a bit more feats, skills and ability. |
