I am one of the poeple that think soc is alittle to weak compared to a wiz and that there is no reson at all to stay a strait soc insted of taking a pristage class as soon as possible. I there for though about adding a New ability to them at frst level I call Barrier.

Barrier: as a full round action to can create a buble round you that will help protect you from magical attacks that last untill your next turn (you can keep it up round to round if you state it). This barrier reduces the damage of all spell and spell like attacks that pass throu it (in or out) by your soc level x2(before and saves are made). For every 5 soc level you have 1 extra person (that is adjacent to you or another in the barrier) can also be protected (1 extra at 5, 2 extra at 10 ect).

Example if a soc level 10 spends the full round action to make the barrier before the dragons turn to shoot his breath wepon of a total of 60 normaly it would do 40 (60-20) with the save for 1/2. If the soc had also put this around her wiz friend that then cast fireball for 30 damage only 10 (30-20) would be dealt (save for 1/2).

Just to point out some spell would be made uless while this is up like magic missle after 3th level as each missle would count sepreat.

Tell me what you think.

To any proposed fixes to the Sorcerer class, the only response I can give is, "Battle Sorcerer from Unearthed Arcana!"

Seriously, it fits most peoples conceptions about the Sorcerer as an intuitive and worldly arcane caster, with decent combat potential, expanded skills, and full arcane spell progression as compared to the wizard.

I do like that and it is in my game as a class of its own, but to me that is a Fighter mage. I am trying to think what would make the soc class work on it's own.

I'm not sure I understand it fully, but there are a couple of the reasons that folks advocate that sorcerers switch to the 1st available prestige class with +1 level of arcane spell casting. One is that there's no prestige in prestige classes in many games. Anyone can take a prestige class if the meet the pre-req's (and this is a bad thing and is why I don't allow prestige classes that aren't gained through good role playing... just because there is a prestige class doesn't mean you're guaranteed the opportuinity to join...). The second reason is that all the sorcerer has going for it is arcane spell casting (which it seems to always get a level later than the wizard).

The good points of this barrier ability are that it scales with level and grows to protect others as you gain levels.

If you're using the spell slot version of the sorcerer from the PHB, it might need something more (if any prestige class can be taken when the bare bones pre-req's are met)... but this is a good start.

There is really no fighter mage class in core DnD, so a (battle) sorcerer works on it's own, and is fairly superior to a multi-class fighter/sorcerer or fighter/wizard. It can also decently fill the role of primary spellcaster as a regular sorcerer if it decides to go that way.

However, if I'm to help any more (if you want me to), I have to know: What is a sorcerer to you, and how do your proposed fixes reflect that?

So in other words you think for some messed up reason that sorcerers should have an arcane shield that for some reason only increases based on a class level. For one thing you are saying that anyone looks at different teachings and stuff can't work with their shield much any more. Sort of silly from a logics point of view. So lets see at level 5 you would give them 10 points of magic damage res (so to speak) against spells. I still think it's worth it jumping ship, at the first chance I get. Though it might might be worth staying especially if the dm has a rule stuffed places that don't see the light of day and make it hard for you to get things like eldrich knight or other classes that are just a mix of styles or something. All in all your trying to fix something that isn't broken.
