I'm working on a backstory in which the PC's life is saved by a friend who uses a spell to transfer HP damage from the PC to himself, nearly dying in the process. (It's one of those "guy who thinks he doesn't need anybody gets his life saved by somebody he ignored and learns the meaning of friendship" things. Kinda cliche but I like it.)

I have a feeling the group rules lawyer is going to ask "what spell was that?", so I want to have an answer. I know "Shield Other" is one such spell; I'm not sure about others, though; and Shield Other isn't quite a transfer-of-HP spell so much as a sharing-HP-damage spell...

The PC is a CN drider, the equivalent of level 15, so the friend could be just about any level up to 20.

I think there's a Psionic power that does it... Empathic Transfer?

There's an exalted feat that does it, iirc. There's also an exalted feat; stigmata.

There's a spell from the BoVD that transfers your wounds to any target; there's probably an opposite one in the BoED. If not, look at the BOVD and just switch things around to create its opposite. I believe it's got some combination of two of these words: transfer, pain, share, wounds

If I recall correctly, one of the D&D books translated the Blood of the Martyr and Glory of the Martyr cards from Magic: the Gathering into spells of the same names, and they did pretty much exactly what you're looking for. The only problem is that I forget what book this was done in. I think it was either Complete Divine or the Book of Exalted Deeds.

If you have access to Magic of Incarnum, there's a soulmeld with a similar effect: Lifebond Vestments. When you use this soulmeld, you can heal others by touch (or at longer range with chakra binds) but you take 1 point of damage for every 2 points of damage that you heal.

Tell him that the friend researched his own spell. Name it whatever you want.
