yeah, so as the title says.... and I ask cause the set up for truenaming is rather harsh unless you really over-specialize on your true naming skill and make custom items, etc.

Current considerations include the following:
Base DC = 10 + HD

Racial type modifies the difficulty:

+0: Humanoid, Animal,

+5: Monstrous Humanoid, Magical Beast

+10: Fey, Giant, Elemental

+15: Undead, Aberration, Shape Changer

+20: Dragon, Outsider

Various Circumstances add other modifiers:

Unique race/last of race/etc: +10 (includes the tarrasque and some demon lords)

legendary fame/infamy: +5

DvR 0: x2
DvR 1-5: x10
DvR 6-10: x20
DvR 11-15: x40
DvR 16-20: x100
DvR 21+: Can not be Truenamed by any lesser entity

Excepting over-deities, reduce the difficulty for True Naming another deity by one step if you are of equal status (demi/lesser/intermediate/greater), and by 2 steps if you are of higher status, to a minimum of x2 difficulty for truenaming any entity with a Divine rank.

Other thoughts? some one got a better system?

This isn't much better. The problem comes at higher levels...for example:

Let's take a solar. It has...what, 30HD? And is an outsider.

According to your rules, that's a 60, which is more than it would have been originally. Which is a problem :D

The whole HD or CR based thing is the problem, and upping it by creature type is even worse.

I had a solution based on a static number a while ago, but appear to have misplaced it. If I find it again, I'll pass it along.

Hmmm, OK, I coudl drop the creature type thing I guess. Which would make it DC40.

The deity thing should stay, gods shoudl be insanely hard to tag wiht truename magic. Well, the idea was sort of off the top of my head. OK, let's see hwat you guys come up with. :

I was looking at making it require a DC base 10 + level of the utterance. Additional uses raising it by a cumulative +2 for the rest of the day. No Truespeak as a skill, just a bonus from Namer class levels (+1 per lvl.)

Note, I don't like using the CR or HD of the target at all. I do like Strenoth's idea of having the DC increased by creature type, though!

I mostly leave it as it is. So long as the truenamer knows he has to push that bonus up level on level and dedicate himself to his prophession you tend to get an increase in the bonus of about 1.5-2.1 per level.

I made this (Truenamerlocking (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=786814)), and am still thinking about the best implementation for putting skill ranks (not modifiers) back, as said there. Input is appreciated, and thanks for the attention.

My game works with this

Lexicon of the Evolving Mind: DC = 15 + CR + (2x Utterance Level)
Lexicon of the Crafted Tool: DC = 15 + Caster Level
Lexicon of the Perfected Map: DC = 20 + (5x Utterance Level)
