UA Bloodline confusion [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hey, I don't know if I put this in the right forum or not, I figured the UA guys would be more familiar with it specifically than the DM counseling guys.

I'm looking at bloodlines in UA and it says that if you have a bloodline then you have to take a bloodline "level" when you level up before you reach a certain point based on the strength or suffer penalties. Exactly what does this "level" involve? I understand how it stacks with class levels, that's easy, but how does one take a bloodline level?

Say I'm a 1st level fighter and I have a minor bloodline, so I need to take a level in "bloodline" by the time I hit 12th or I no longer gain benefits. So I'm just chilling out, gaining my normal class levels, when I realize "Hey, I just hit 11th level! Better take my bloodline!" So I stay 10th level fighter and I've taken 1 bloodline level. Now how do I figure out how much xp I need for my next level? Does my bloodline level effectively push me up to 11th according to how much xp I need? Or do I just need the same amount of xp, as if I had to level up to 11th "again"? On my sheet, do I put "Ftr10/Bloodline1"? The book says "Class levels of bloodline do not increase a character's character level the way a normal class level does, but they do provide certain benefits." So I assume this means I don't get my 3rd level character feat if I am Ftr2 and take a level in bloodline, but it doesn't explain how it interacts with effective party level or experience needed to continue leveling.

I understand I'm probably way overcomplicating it, but the way the book reads, I could go a couple different ways and feel confident that it's correct, which is what bothers me.

basically, treat it like a Level Adjustment, but better because of the effective level of class abilities bit.

like a wizard2/bloodline1 would cast spells with level 3 power, but not get a bonus feat and only have 2 HD.

That's the part I understand. The question is, would the amount of xp he needs to get to 3rd level wizard be the amount of xp to get from 2nd to 3rd level, or from 3rd level to 4th level? And what level is he treated as for determining his party level? 3rd? You said treat it like a LA, so I assume you mean he would need to get to "4th" level to be 3rd level wizard, and be considered 4th as far as challenge ratings and things go? Thanks for the reply.

To determine amount of XP needed, and which encounters are appropriate, use the total of Class Levels + Bloodline Levels.

Thanks Morwen. That's the way I was leaning towards it working, too much confusion the other way. I just feel a lot better about it getting a bit of confirmation from someone else.

That's why I said treat it like Level Adjustment, I guess I shouldhave been clearer. :) A fighter 2 Bloodline 1 LA+1 character would would be treated as a 4th level character for XP purposes.

BTW, a small question: would a wizard 2/minor bl 1 have the spell slot (incl. a level 2 spell) of a wizard 3, or is it just for spellcaster level in that case?

It's used only for calculations of level-based abilities. Page 19 says "The character doesn't gain any abilities, spells known, or spells per day from the addition of his bloodline levels".
