When a rogue or other character with UMD makes his/her initial DC 20 skill check, then she can forever use that particular wand. This would mean they wouldn't have to make the UMD check for every single use. They learned the right trick to begin with to activate the wand. It does increase the power of UMD for rogues and the like with wands. What do you think? Over powered? Just fine? |

(From the UMD skill description...buried deep in text) For a "high magic" campaign in which spells are nearly as common as trees in a forest, I could see this being used. The only downside is the bookkeeping involved in tracking which wands the rogue has "learned". In a "normal" campaign, I would change the rule a little bit: A character who beats the DC by 5 or more may activate the wand without rolling UMD in the future. This serves to prevent characters from dropping 1 rank into the skill and eventually "mastering" every wand they come across. A level 1 character could manage this (Cross-class with +3 Cha on a natural 20, or Class with a +1 Cha on a natural 20), but only with limited frequency. |
