The hole in the plot is like this: Whenever a character gets level drained all of their level based abilities go down, including spellcasting ability. This makes perfect sense for most character classes, as most classes' class abilities come from the character's own adroitness and aptitude at performing that particular type of action. HOWEVER, this generalization does not extend to divine spellcasters, particularly clerics, as their spellcasting ability does not derive from their own skill, but, rather, is granted to them by their god (or goddess), and there is no explanation given in the rules as to why a cleric's deity should choose to grant the cleric less spells per day just because they, say, got into a fight with a vampire, or a powerful wizard or something. In some places in the flavor text for some things its KIND OF implied sort of that the reason for this reduction in spellcasting ability is because the cleric's mind can no longer handle being able to cast so many spells per day, but it's not very explicit about this. My proposal is that, to better reflect this idea that a level drained cleric's mind can no longer handle being granted so many spells per day, the rules should be changed to work as follows: I instead of losing access to the extra spells per day granted by their former, higher, level, level drained clerics of certain deities (mainly chaotic or evil deities who don't particularly care about their clerics' mental well being, as well as other deities who desperately need some task performed by the cleric) would remain able to cast as many cleric spells per day as they formerly could BUT any spells that they cast in excess of the spells per day usually granted to clerics of their new level, cause sanity loss as per the sanity rules presented in "Unearthed Arcana". (Obviously, this rule is most meaningful in campaigns where casting cleric spells doesn't usually cause sanity loss). So, what do you think of that proposal? Any Comments?? |
