My gaming circle has recently began using the variant rules that involves using hit points for your armor and that it takes some of the hit point damage instead of you character.

Well either we're blind and just missed it but we didn't see any notes on how this effects spells.

So I figured I'd share our ideas on how to handle this with all of you.

Spells that use touch attacks ignores the armor taking part of the damage, the pc or npc gets it all. Plus spells like magic missile which just hit the desired target without any rolls also ignore the armor hp. However spells like fireball which don't actually target a character specifically, just an area are affected by the armor.

This is still an ongoing experiment, but so far we think we're on the right track.

Hope this helps anyone else.

PS any ideas, comments or suggestions abhout this are welcome.

From page 74 of the DMG (3.0 version):
Magical attacks and energy attacks (even mundane fire) ignore damage reduction.
So there you go.

You are confusing the Armor as DR rules (which is how you stated it) with the Armor with hit points rules (which is what seadevil is referring to I believe).

I haven't read that DG entry yet, but yeah... we're using the hit points variant for armor.

Now we ARE using damage reduction for the Mage Armor spell.
