Variant Experience Point system? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I wonder if anyone out there uses a variant on the experience point
system (currently based on the CRs of the individual traps, monsters,
etc. that make up an encounter) that is based on the Encounter
Level instead. This seems more logical to me since the game is
designed such that 12-13 or so fair encounters (EL = avg level of PCs
in a 4 character party) will lead to a level increase.

I assume you could simplify it to some extent down to a simple grid
listing the PC level on one axis and the Encounter Level on the other.
The value on the grid would be the total XP, which would then need
to be divided by 4 normally. A larger party divides by a larger number
and reduces XP accordingly and vice versa with a smaller party.

I'd still add bonus XP for interesting tactics, creative ideas, fun
roleplaying, completing mission objectives, etc.

Thoughts?

It is a throwback to the old system of D&D and was rightly flushed. Unearthed Arcana should have left it Unearthed. May it rot in peace.

Why don't you like it? I am think of the static XP mostly to save myself some time when calculating XP at the end of a session. The current lookup based on party level is a big pain in my experience, even worse when you have a mixed level party. I also use a lot of mix CR encounters, and at high level the dozens of CR 9 monsters which actually were a threat to the party when in a group of other higher CR monsters don't give any experience under non static system.
