08-21-07, 03:47 AM I have an encounter set in a fighting pit for my players. Each side had ten minutes to prepare. The party is currently seventh level, and I had the enemies as low-level kobolds (mostly warrior 1st and rogue 1st). They set up ropes and pulleys all across the pit during their preparation and tied all sorts of gadgets up to pull on the adventurers who come to attack, then pulled out crossbows to begin fighting.

In the first round, the wizard cast Web in the center of the kobolds, assuming that the webbing would get caught on the ropes. Now, the Web spell indicates that it needs solid diametrically opposed surfaces to "stick". Since the ropes are only semi-solid, I was thinking that I would use the kobold's use rope checks to see how well they supported the ropes. If the Use Rope check was less than the saving throw of a second level spell, I would have the rope callapse. Only one of six ropes callapsed. I am wondering what I should do with the webbing for the other five ropes. They are "solid" in the sense that the webbing did not pull them down, but I am not sure if they are solid enough to hold the webbing in place (creating a trap for the kobolds). I am looking for some diminished effect of the webbing that would be a good description of what happened. Is it enough he got the one rope? Or should I give the web more of an effect, like it was not able to hold solid on the ropes and only managed to grab the kobolds in range, pulling them into each other in a neat little pile, but then dissipating? Do kobolds count as solid surfaces for the web spell to anchor to?

08-21-07, 10:53 AM Rope is a solid, but I don't think it's "solid." The stuffs in question must be strong enough to anchor the web. A trap is only as strong as what it's built on, right? No, kobolds don't count.

So...

Yea, I'd be all like "thank you come again." If the player could've anchored it to something, let him recast. If he couldn't, let them re-plan unless the fight has started already.

08-21-07, 11:22 AM I wasn't sure, because the ropes are archored to pillars on the sides of the pits. I was thinking that it might count as "solid" because the rope is anchored. Of course, since it is rather maleable, that might get rid of the "solid"-ness. Also, I like to reward creativity, so I would like the spell to have some effect. Would having one of the ropes fall be enough, but the web cannot hold its structure to the other ropes?
