Is there any way to use the vitalizing variant rule with the actual standard D&D magic system?

Try adding up the total spell levels available at the current level, including bonuses, and have the caster be affected when he is down to half his total spell levels.

Wizard example:
A 3rd level wizard with 12 has a total of 5 spell levels available (3 first level slots, 1 second level slot). Casting the second level spell leaves him with just the three first level slots. He has yet to cast half of his spell levels, however. Once he casts a first level spell, he is down to 2 first level spell slots, worth a total of two spell levels. This is below half.

Remember, he is not casting by spell levels, so with those 3 first level slots he cannot cast another 2nd level spell.

Pretty easy, eh?
