| ZiggZagg09-20-07, 09:33 PM | I plan on trying out the Vitalizing Spell Point variant in my next campaign. The main reasons are that I want to try something different and one of my players wants to be a psion. So I figured I would try spell points for the whole game instead of just one class. Has anyone else tried this system? If so, how did it work? Did you like it? Why or why not? I am more of a fan of Per Encounter vs Per Day rules, so I would like everyone to be able to go for the bulk of the day without having to rest all the time. |
| unrepentantweed09-22-07, 12:37 AM | I remember using an older version back in 2nd edition, the spells and magic players option. It worked fine. I have always been a big fan of MP in D&D, and to this day run it that way in my games. Magic will become a more important part of the setting, but things are still balanced. It all depends on your style. |
| RobbyPants09-24-07, 03:35 PM | I liked the idea of it, although there were parts of the basic spellpoint system that I didn't like. I created my own spellpoint system that would involve fatigue and exaustion for casting too low, but (as of last night, acutally), I decided to do away with it. There are certain issues you'll have to take care of. For example, a simple 2nd level spell (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/restorationLesser.htm) will totally nullify the effects of fatigue. |
| ZiggZagg09-24-07, 09:36 PM | Another question that I have about this system is how to deal with Metamagic. In psionics, they have the psionic focus system to keep them from using too many metapsionic feats on a particular power. However, they don't have that for spellcasters, and I find it kinda cheesy to introduce that to spellcasters. So, how do you limit spellcasters from using too many metamagic feats on a spell under this system? |

Try reading the material before questioning how it works. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/spellPoints.htm#metamagicAndSpellPoints Effectively, the character must pay for the spell as if it were a higher-level spell, based on the adjustment from the metamagic feat. If the metamagic effect(s) would increase the spell’s effective level above what he is capable of casting, he can’t cast the spell in that way. |
| ZiggZagg09-27-07, 12:38 AM | I did read it and I didn't understand it. So don't go accusing people of dumb oversights before you make one of your own. |
| Zaranthan09-27-07, 09:58 AM | What's not to understand? It states, plain as day, that spell points work exactly like power points for using metamagic. |
| ZiggZagg09-27-07, 03:45 PM | Obviously they don't, because Psions have the Psionic Focus quality and their metapsionic feats essentially just the number of extra spell slotsx2 (Quick costs an extra 8 power points for example). That is what I was asking since they obviously aren't implementing an "arcane focus" |
| Sexy_ferret09-29-07, 12:46 PM | I know this might sound weird and might over power your caster a lot, but In the dragonlance campaign seting for 5th age magic they had a spell point system. Though the creation of spells is a little wacky. On another note to keep your spell casters "active" you could make it so if they dont take strenous (spelling) actions they gain like 1 spell point per say every hour or half-hour. Though im warning you it could easly over power casters this way. |
