I have been thinking about changing the movement system for my campaign,

1: use tape-measures, instead of six squares, you get 6 inches.

2: no grid (I'd still have one under the table for backup)

Now the problem could be:

Movement, Ranged attacks etc, are going to take longer.

I just enjoy building tables/scenery and such for wargames,
And would like to get some more use out of my creations.

My group tried this before, it definatly allows for alot more freedom in combat. The downside is, as you thought, its very time consuming. Larger combats can take up to twice to thrice as long than if you were just using some sort of grid.

I suggest trying it out for at least one session, and depending on how you all feel about it, either ditch it or keep it.

I would suggest pre-measuring as much as possible. A piece of string cut to the length of your movement can be handy.

AoOs could get complicated, you might have to draw up circles around each creature for reach.

i did this extensively in my last game. it went well, and since most of us had warhammer experience it didnt take very long to measure stuff out. the biggest problem was not measuring, but the fact that spell aoe's were able to hit a whole lot of figures (without the grid more characters fit in the same space, and there are alot of bases that are only partially in an effect). but the freedom of movement was nice, and not counting diaganols differently was also nice.

i ultimately decided to just use a hex map instead however, which has been nice. it provides more freedom than the square grid, allows the spells to be a bit more naturaly shaped while still getting closer to the intended number of targets than the tape measure method, and it allows me to use heroscape tiles as terrain (they are fun, try it. just make sure you have several sets of tiles).

Have reach templates for AoO's. Make a transparent circle and transpose it over/under a model to figure out his/its reach.

Have you considered using hex-based grids? It tends to be much better suited to outdoor movement than squares, but still retains the benefits of grid-based movement. It might make for a good hybrid appoach to experiment with.
