| HailSpork03-17-05, 04:06 PM | This is a houserule I'm using in an upcoming campaign. I've kept the concept of the teifling and aasimar, but I've done away with the stats. Instead, being a teifling means that your favored class is warlock, and you must take warlock at level 1. Warlock is barred from all non-teiflings (unless something in game changes things). I've done the same with aasimars and favored souls. Why? The descriptions of these classes just struck me as coinciding with the plane-touched races. Not just the description, but also the fact that both classes get energy resistences. That's the basics behind things. Now, here are the things I wasn't sure on: What about alignment restrictions? I kept warlocks as either evil or chaotic. I decided to change favored soul to either lawful or good. What about the favored soul of an evil god? They're warlocks. Are there any other changes? I decided to give aasimars +2 listen and spot, and teiflings get +2 hide and bluff. They are also both considered native outsiders. Can any race be plane-touched? I decided for now to limit it to humans. Afterall, you couldn't play an aasimar halfling beforehand. Still, once I test it, I'll probably open it up to more options. |

I feel the same way about the warlock and tieflings, not so much about favored souls and aasimars. However, requiring every tiefling take his first level in warlock, and every aasimar take favored soul, seems very limiting. You may lose a few potential players with that. Simply making warlock the favored class for tiefling, and only allowing tieflings to be warlocks (same for favored soul and aasimar) will inject a great deal of flavor into your campaign setting while still allowing some flexibility with tiefling and aasimar PCs. Hrm. This has me thinking about other classes that could feasibly only be taken by one race. Scout and elf, possibly? Not sure, as I don't even have the Complete Adventurer. Oh, one thing before I forget. Aren't planetouched already Outsiders with the (native) subtype? |
| allenchan03-17-05, 11:52 PM | Your limiting two caster classes (well, warlock is psuedo-caster) to races that have a level adjustments?! If you're playing a caster you almost never, ever want to play a creature with a level adjustment, its crippling. Not only that, but tieflings get a minus to charisma, and that's a warlock's second most important stat. personally, i think your idea is seriously flawed and seriously underpowered, and you're effectively gimping any and all characters that want to be warlocks. (favoured souls blow chunks anyways, so anybody that would want to play one instead of a cleric thinks "roleplaying" means playing bad character designs). my two cents |
| Korimyr the Rat03-18-05, 01:19 AM | Heh. When I assigned second classes to every race to form Favored Gestalts, I used Favored Soul for both Aasimar (Paladin/Favored Soul) and Tiefling (Rogue/Favored Soul). I also adjusted their stats because Tieflings should never, ever have been given a Charisma penalty. Works kinda nice-- there's a smooth parallel between each of the Outer Planetouched. Aasimar Paladin, Tiefling Rogue, Chaond Barbarian and Zenthyri Monk. Unfortunately, I don't allow Warlocks in my games. I like the class, but there are too many ugly, abusive combinations in a Gestalt game. (If I reverted to single classes, I'd happily allow them again.) |
| HailSpork03-18-05, 03:49 AM | Your limiting two caster classes (well, warlock is psuedo-caster) to races that have a level adjustments?! No, I think you entirely missed the point of my post. I have completely removed the book stats for teiflings and aasimar, but kept the concept of them. The only thing they keep is background (IE, I have some fiendish/celestial blood), skill bonuses, and being an outsider. I never liked that teiflings get a penalty to charisma and a bonus to bluff. It seems counter-intuitive. Most devils get above average charisma; half-fiends get +2 charisma. (I read Korimyr's post after writing this; I'm glad you agree). Yeah, favored soul isn't as good of a fit, but it counter-balances the warlock. I could remove the first level requirement, but then I wouldn't want to open it up to non-humans. Humans sacrifice their open favored class for benefits, the other races would just change theirs. |
| Aricandor03-20-05, 07:50 AM | Hmm... You know what? This is actually a very cool idea. I might just have to steal it. :D The problem though, is that tieflings and aasimar are kind of underpowered in this solution. Only skill bonuses and the type/subtype is kind of lame when compared to dwarves, elves and even half-elves. I think the Darkvision and resistances could be decent things to keep without overpowering them... Perhaps the spell-like instead of resistances though... |
| HailSpork03-20-05, 09:18 AM | Feel free to steal. I think that's the whole point of this forum. I mean to apply it as a template, so they're still humans with extra abilities/limitations. So, like humans, they get a bonus feat and 1 skill point per level. Advantages: not affected by malicious "person" spells, +2 bonus to two skills. Disadvantages: not affected by good "person" spells, limited favored class. That's why I was wondering if they should get the +2 bonus to the skills; exchanging your open favored class for the benefits of being an outsider may be even already. Depending on how it works, I may apply this template to other races as well; elves would still get all their bonuses, they'd just be plane-touched elves. |
