Two questions for y'all

First, does the UA spell point system stand the test of serious play? I'm wary..but interested

Second, could any of you suggest a conversion of the War Mage to the spell point system?

Thanks so much

1) No, the spell point system dropped into a campaign will cause imbalances, because unlike psionic powers, high level spells weren't made with the idea you'd be using them 20-30 times a day.

2) If you must, just use the conversion they give for the Sorcerer for spellpoints, and keep the standard spell list.

I disagree, Spell Points are a real improvement of the game for spell casters.
Whatever their level, low or high.

For the warmage's Spell Points, well, you can give him the ratio of the Sorcerer, unless you want to make his own table, but that would complicate things.

I agree with that first statement; the SP system puts casters on a level playing field with manifesters (which to me seem vastly overpowered when compared to spellcasters, especailly when you see five level 9 powers flying at you once you've exhausted your four for the day).

The spell point system has worked wonders in our campaign.

I highly reccommend using spell points, even at the slightest sign of getting bored of vancian magic.

Gygax's Vancian casters have been the bane of my D&D sessions for about.. 15 years now. It's the sole reason I NEVER play a Wizard with rules-monkey GM and players present.
It was a mistake when the concept was dreamt of but the choice of not correcting it (through errata, options, what have you) has made it an obnoxious hinderance.

If by improvement you mean significant power up, sure. Casters are overpowered as is.

Take it to the Psionics forum. Seriously, I'm too lazy to argue it right now, but Casters are far and away stronger than manifesters. Casters don't need any sort of a bump to become 'equal' to the Manifesters.

The short version of the argument is a Psion's powers are significantly weaker than a Wizard's spells, so comparing just the Psion's pure number of spells vs just the Wizard's very top level of spells isn't really being fair. You have to compare the Psion's full alotment of powers against all of the Wizard's top 3-4 levels of spells, and then realize the Wizard still has staying power of his lower level spells on top of that, when the Psion has run completely dry.

Also realize that the Psion's powers were made intentionally weaker to make up for his ability to use his high level powers more often. The Psionics system was made from the ground up on the assumption that it would work this way. The reason spellpoint casters don't work is because their spells don't have this preconcieved bias built into them, so are much stronger than they should be for the ammount they can be used.

This isn't even mentioning the Wizard's ability to layer multiple metamagic effects and not need to waste a move action regaining psionic focus.

I'm here to pimp my system: check my signature for my MP system. A printer friendly/downloadable version will be posted up soon.
