Has anyone made a Weapon Proficiency tree house rule? Basically the more proficient you are with a weapon, the more damage it does (up the die size/crit-range respectively).
If you are proficient with all simple weapons, you use all simple weapons effectively (if you don't have simple weapons proficiency, and you use a weapon you aren't proficient with, you take the normal -4 to hit) as their stats state (as normal). If you try to use a martial weapon, you use it as a simple weapon and the damage die goes down by one size; likewise the critical range becomes 20x2 regardless of what the weapon was before. The weapon still deals the same type of damage, though.
If you are proficient with martial weapons, you use them as their stats state (as normal). If you are not proficient with all martial weapons and you use an exotic weapon, you take the above-mentioned penalties as well as the -4 to hit (unless you are proficient with the exotic weapon itself.
If you are proficient with all martial weapons and you use an exotic weapon, you take the above penalties without the -4 to attack. (This also makes sense for weapons that require a special technique to do the most damage). Again you do not take any penalties if you use an exotic weapon and are proficient with it.

I also think you should be able to take an exotic-equivalent feat with a specific weapon. I'm not sure what effects would be balanced, but I'm thinking a larger die-size and possibly an improved critcal threat range (by only one, though).
The requirements for this feat would be proficiency with the weapon, weapon focus (the weapon), and Improved Critical.

Any ideas on the actual mechanics of this feat? Should it be a feat tree?
What about the proficiency mechanic (mostly copied from an idea I saw awhile back on the D20Modern forums, and couldn't find this time)? Thanks!

This is what feats like weapon focus, weapon specialization, and improved critical are for. This demonstrates you are getting getting with your chosen weapon
