Weapon Group Feats variant question [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm using the Weapon Group Feats variant from Unearthed Arcana. I think it's a more realistic way to organize weapon proficiencies - it just makes more sense that a woodcutter, say, who knows how to use a handaxe would have a better idea how to wield other kinds of axes than he would a longsword or something.

Anyway ... the weapon group feats section doesn't ever address multiclass characters. I'm not sure how to deal with that.

These are the options I can think of, but I don't know which one to go with:

1) Weapon Group feats are decided at character level 1, so multiclassing has no effect whatsoever. If you want to be able to use more feats, you have to spend a feat slot on them.

2) If you start out in a class with few weapon group feats and then multiclass into a class with more, then you'd get the difference ... so, for example, a cleric (with Basic + any other 2) who multiclasses as a fighter (with Basic + any other 4) would get 2 more weapon group bonus feats.
Conversely, if you start out as a class with many weapon group feats and then multiclass into a class with fewer, then you get nothing, but you don't lose any either.

3) You get weapon group feats for every class as though you were 1st level. So a barbarian 1/fighter 1 would get a total of Basic + any other 7 weapon group feats. A barbarian 1/fighter 1/cleric 1 would get Basic + any other 9.

What have other people done? What seems fair?

Thanks in advance.

I personally have used the third option before, and although it doesn't seem to unbalance the game overmuch, I've been thinking about using something more like the second option for future campaigns.

OK. Interesting. I would've thought the third option would be a bit too much, but I suppose that since most PCs can only carry/use so many weapons at a time, it doesn't really have that great an effect on balance.

I like the look of the second option best, though.

Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate it.
