| Phoenix Knight07-22-06, 11:07 AM | I have used it. It's very cool, and led me to my work on fighting styles (in the sig), though I may go back to weapon groups just for ease of use. It's not really overpowered. I almost want to say underpowered. You get to use a lot less weapons than someone with all martial weapons. It's good if you want to use exotic weapons. It's a nice bonus that your feats apply to an entire group of weapons, though many people will still only a single kind of weapon most of the time anyway. It kind of encourages PCs to diversify a little more. Suddenly its no longer, "oh a magic scimitar...we'll, I'm specialized in longsword, so let's sell it..." |
| SolenVlos07-24-06, 01:00 PM | I ask this becouse I plan to give to my character a greatspear (CW), a grearbow(bow) and an exotic two weapon sword, but I can't find any. anyone know of one? |
| Phoenix Knight07-24-06, 09:16 PM | You mean that you are trying to save feats by only having to take one Exotic Weapon feat? I think several us using groups ruled that you had to take Exotic Weapon Group for each group (at least I got the idea from someone here). However, even by the book, you'd have to take Exotic Weapon Group and Exotic Weapon Group (Double Weapons), two feats to do that. The two-bladed sword is an exotic weapon in the PHB. The double scimitar appears in Arms and Equipment. Those are the only double sword weapons that come to mind. I'm not sure if that answers the question, but I hope it helps. |
| SilvercatMoonpaw07-24-06, 09:56 PM | After a while I found weapon groups to be a bit hard to work with: there are only so many weapons that you'd probably end up creating groups that overlap or there are weapons that just don't fit in anywhere so you just lump them in with something else. I've come up with two alternatives: Monte Cook reduced weapon feats for exotic weapons to just two in his Arcana Evolved game. While this works it means that it is way too easy to aquire weapon proficiency. If you want to make it seem like characters have to work to earn their swords you want there to be more feats in their way. I think one way to do this is to divide martial weapons up along the categories they are presented in the PHB: light, one-handed, two-handed, polearm, and ranged-thrown. You do the same for exotic weapons and make the martial weapon group part of the prerequisite. So now you have fewer feats to deal with. Make Weapon Group Proficiencies a template-like feat: each time you take it you can choose X simple, Y martial, and maybe one exotic (perfect for those samurai who train with longbows and polearms as well as katanas and wakazashis). This is essentially what weapon groups do, but now they can be flavor-tailored to whatever the PC wants. This frees you from having to think up weapons groups for each feat, just adjudicate what the player wants. |
| Darth Sephiroth07-25-06, 04:38 AM | I like it and use it, though more based off of a mix of the Star Wars version and the Spycraft version |
| SolenVlos07-25-06, 08:43 AM | What I mean is that I intend to play a character that uses only exotic weapons. and it is inviable to do so using normal proficiency rules, unless you take -4, becouse I belive that no one would take exotic weapon proficiency 4 or 5 times. and the sword I look for is an exotic version of the greatsword. is there any? |
| SilvercatMoonpaw07-25-06, 09:01 AM | What I mean is that I intend to play a character that uses only exotic weapons. and it is inviable to do so using normal proficiency rules, unless you take -4, becouse I belive that no one would take exotic weapon proficiency 4 or 5 times. I've heard people complain that many exotic weapons are just PHB weapons with a minor new tweak, so there shouldn't be too much problem having only exotic weapon proficiencies. In some context "exotic" weapons may be martial weapons. If you are willing to give up all martial weapon proficiencies I don't see why it would be such a problem to let you exchange that for 4 or 5 exotic weapons without using up feat slots. If you already have all martial, then it's still silly to have to take 4 to 5 feats to get all the exotic weapons you want. The double swords should cost one each unless you have proficiency with the martial sword verison (because a double-sword can be used as a single sword), in which case it should only cost you one feat to have proficiency with all "double-swords". I have no idea what the greatspear and gearbow are, so I can't help you there. |
| SolenVlos07-25-06, 10:31 AM | greatspear and greatbow are just like the longspear and the longbow, only greater ´=D greatspear deals 2d6 damage, greatbow deals 1d10. I want to give this character a fell of "master of many weapons, always with the right tool for that job" So I will use a 2handed weapon, a reach weapon, and a ranged weapon as primary weapons. and have backups like throwing weapons, hammers, etc. |
