| Grizzled Gryphon12-25-07, 05:03 AM | So I got invited to a game the other day. It starts after the new year. Cool, I haven't played in a while, so why not? I ask about character creation. The stats are 4D6, drop the lowest, roll six times, place as you will. However, everyone is going to roll there stats at the first session. Fine. Any race as long as there is no LA or racial hit die, as it is first level to begin. Fine. This, mind you, was all done over the phone. I finished yakking with my buddy, and hung up. I flipped through the books, and decided to try a Kobold Sorcerer, going into Dracolexi later on. Looks fun. I am going to focus on spells that alter me, like Aspect of the Dragon, and other, specific polymorph subschool classes. I will sort of be a casting melee monster. Sounds like fun, anyway. I call him up the other day, and tell him my build idea, and he says "sounds good. What is the other half of your build, though?" "The what?", I respond. "The other half of your build. We are doing a gestalt game." So, here I am with a character concept I like. I really have no particular preference for the 'other half' of the build. I kicked around a few ideas, but nothing really stands out. So, I figured I would come here and see what kind of suggestions I get from you good folks. I will probably pick whatever is suggested the most. Thanks in advance, everyone!!! :D :EDIT: I will keep a running total of classes here. Votes will be tallied until post 30. Then, I will tally them up, and see which class I take!! (I hope no one votes for Healer...) Please limit your suggestions to the books I have, a list of which can be found in my sig. Here are the tallies so far (as of post Ten; if I am off, please let me know) Barbarian 2 Psion 1 Warlock 1 Rogue 3 Monk 2 Fighter 3 Ranger 1 Druid 3 Cleric 1 Ninja 2 Swordsage 1 Duskblade 1 Artificier 1 Nope, don't have that book. Dragon Shaman 1 Favored Soul 1 Rogue so far, but there is a lot of time still. Keep the votes coming!! |
| BloodAdvocateReincarnated12-25-07, 07:15 AM | why not take barbarian as your other half. I mean kobolds live mostly in the wilderness in tribes right? Besides the HP and DR is great. You might try ranger if you like RP. (Polymorphing seems like nature magic to me, at least dragon aspects and such) |
| zeratulcraft12-25-07, 07:38 AM | Everything can do with more psionics. |
| Avatar of Kokusho12-25-07, 08:16 AM | Warlock. Of couse, with gestalt, it's probably a fact that you won't be able to go Eldritch Theurge, but hey- you won't NEED to. |
| Talisman12-25-07, 08:16 PM | Rogue, for huge skill points, sneak attack, and evasion. Monk, for the AC buff and miscellaneous cool abilities. Fighter, for a pile of bonus feats and a d10 HD. Ranger, for a decent blend of d8 HD, good skills, good Fort and Ref saves, and useful bonus abilities. Druid or cleric to take over the world and crush it beneath your iron claw. |
| Krusk12-26-07, 01:31 AM | a barbarian or rogue would give you lots of nifty bonuses, and you could ignore the sneak attack and rage roleplay wise. You would be left with the same character, but have better saves, uncanny dodge, maybe more skills and evasion, and maybe d12hp. |
| ppirilla12-26-07, 02:39 AM | Fighter. Everyone overlooks the fighter in Gestalt because it's rather weak in conventional play, but I've found that it makes a great suppliment to a good conventionally-classed character interested in melee. d10 HD is always a plus, and the figher feats give you an alternate route for improving your combat prowess, while leaving you the normal feats for metamagic and other spellcasting bumps. I've made good use in the past of a Figher // Favored Soul that was able to buff, mop up in combat, and then pass out the band-aids afterwards |
| Grizzled Gryphon12-26-07, 09:01 AM | I certainly considered the fighter for the BAB, saves, and a few more skills. But mostly for the hit die and the bonus feats. I heartily concur, fighter is great for gestalt characters. Consider the Fighter/Barbarian and the Fighter/Rogue. Both are great classes to play. Warlock... Well, that would be interesting, now wouldn't it? And in this game, I can play an Eldritch Theurge, as long as neither Warlock or Sorcerer are on the other side of the gestalt while I take levels of that class. I could take Barbarian, but it would seem to be mostly a waste, to me. I mean, yeah, the 1D12 hit points are good, and so are the various points you made, but I wouldn't be able to use rage and whatnot, as it messes up magic. If I could change into a Desert Hunter, (or whatever) and then use rage, this would be an entirely different story. Thanks to the Polymorph Subschool, you lose all of your class abilities when you cange shape. However, you do keep your hit points... I will have to think further on this... Psionics... Hmm, Wilder... Interesting idea... I was considering a few options, actually. Let me know what you all think. One is a Swordsage. The other is the Factotem. And, last but not least, the Favored Soul. Krusk, your reasonings are sound for either class. I could always go scout, and gain some skirmish to ranged touch spells... Or I will just go with whatever is suggested the most. Sounds like fun, so why not? I will wait for 30 posts, and then tally up the nominations, and go with that!! |
| larry_the_titan12-26-07, 09:31 AM | I say you should either go Druid-great buff spells, a little slower on picking up healing, and Shapeshifting. The animal companion won't hurt and you could pick up natural spell which allows you to cast why in another form. Monk-Improved AC, unarmed strike damage, tumble as a class skill all of which will let you move in and out of combat a bit easier. Ninja-same as monk but has sudden strike instead of unarmed strike but the drop in power will be made up at 2nd level with ghost step which will let you go invisible for a round for a swift action. Rogue-nothing quite like the first time you sneak up on some one and get sneak attack as a Megaraptor or T Rex. |
| UAMDB12-26-07, 10:00 AM | I say Sword Sage. d8 for hit points good skill points At second level Wis to AC which is always nice. If you go the way of Shadow Hand, you get weapon focus on dagger and short sword (which wizards like to use) You can take the stance that gives you concealment if you move. Actually if you take two levels of this, then go scout for the skirmish damage. You will always be moving for extra damage, and concealment. |
| Grizzled Gryphon12-26-07, 08:39 PM | I am keeping a running tally at the bottom of the first post. |
| strenoth12-28-07, 02:35 AM | OK, as a general concept.. one way to make a caster more powerful is to add BAB, as this makes touch attacks even easier. so if you take at least 4 levels of a +1 BaB class, and the rest at least +3/4, you are golden. I'm thinking you may want to have yoru other side be dip-tastic if your Dm is not using the multiclass penalty rules. 2+ levels of ranger for BaB, Point Blank Shot, nice skills, other bonus feats. 1+ level of Monk for Wis to AC, IUS. 2 or 4 levels of fighter for BaB, bonus feats (might I recomend Superior Unarmed Strike? you never know when it might be useful, and it can carry touch spells too.) Warlock, Binder, and Incarnate carry some potential with buffs, but only choose one, if you choose one at all. Rogue is useful with skill points & SA, but scout can do the same job and often better for a mage with move & shoot. Though 2 levels ranger & three levels scout qualifies you for a feat from Complete adventurer that lets the levels stack for skirmish, thn you take more levels of ranger on that side, if you want to focus on direct damage spells that require attack rollls. Outside of SA and skil points, ranger is better than rogue for you. Good fort save as well as good ref, higher HD, +1 BaB, and a possibly useful animal companion. Spelless varient might be more useful :) |
| Grizzled Gryphon12-28-07, 06:17 AM | Thanks, Strenoth. Question, though, what is IUS in the Monk section of your post? Going with the higher BAB idea, would Duskblade be a bad choice? I would get more spells, and some nifty abilities. I think, anyway... I think Scout is a great idea, as the skirmish would work well with the Ranged Touch spells, and the bonus feats would be nice, too. I have to admit, the Greater Unarmed Strike idea is good, but I haveall of my feats already picked out. Heck, I am in a quandry as to which feat to lose so I can gain Fiery Burst. Yeah, the damage aspect isn't so great, but it is basically free as long as I have a slot and the right kind of spell open, but the real nice thing is the +1 caster level on fire spells. I plan on going the Scorching Ray Metamagic Mania route (with the various Power Word spells as back up), and any extra caster levels for that spell are great. I know the extra caster levels don't do anything much with the metamagic costs, but more damage is always a good thing. Here is another quandry I am having with this character. I know I want these feats, but I don't know when to take them. Arcane Thesis Fiery Burst Empower Spell Heighten Spell Metamagic... Something, I forget. You get to drop one from the cost of a metamagic feat... Metamagic Specialist? Maximize spell Rapid Metamagic Energy Substitution Repeat Spell Energy Admixture Too many feats!! However, the DM just informed me yesterday that Flaws are allowed, so I get an extra two from that. BUT, they are only first level feats... Any help, here? Or should I post a new thread for that? |
| UAMDB12-28-07, 09:32 AM | The Duskblade can be cool if you are planning on using Touch spells as your main offense. Because that is where the Duskblade excells. You get Twice as many HP's as you Sorc, and you can find some Mitheral Chainshirt with Twilight and wear Armour without Spell Failure. Just remember that you will be limited in Spell selection, but you wont have to worry about preparing any spells. Also note that if the spell description says make a "Range Touch Attack" you can not channel the spell through your weapon. |
| strenoth12-28-07, 10:22 AM | IUS stands for improved unarmed strike. :) |
| SokenzanMarauder12-28-07, 07:36 PM | Healer! Kidding. :D I'm going to throw in my vote for Ninja. |
| Grizzled Gryphon12-28-07, 10:17 PM | Strenoth Thanks!! Wow was THAT was obvious. Now I feel dumb. Oh well, that is what I get for looking at emails very, very late. UAMDB (Use All Magic Devices Badly?? ) Heh, just kidding. Would the Twilight enchantment on a Mithral Chain Shirt drop the Arcane Spell Failure to nothing? Otherwise, I would still have the Arcane Spell Failure on my Sorcerer spells. |

Otherwise, I would still have the Arcane Spell Failure on my Sorcerer spells. You could always go for the spell Mage Armor. Gives an armor bonus, no check penalty, no spell failure. |
| Hollow_World01-02-08, 11:45 PM | Have you seen the feat from race of the dragon called Dragonwrought? It would be perfect for your Kobold Sorcerer if you make him venerable. :) Also if you want spells that help alter your Sorcerer try druid or cleric. I would probably go druid my self, just for the extra chape changing abilities. |
| VengefulGazeofGod01-03-08, 01:27 AM | Fighter for the BAB, d10's, and FEATS!! Good luck! |
| Grizzled Gryphon01-03-08, 06:43 AM | Here we are, a few days away from the time I need to pick, and the Fighter, Druid, and Rogue are neck in neck. But, who knows? Two days left or nine more posts to go, so anything could happen! |
| VengefulGazeofGod01-04-08, 04:43 AM | You cheat! You are counting your own posts and that is 6 out of 21 posts. That is a large percentage to say 30 posts. If we are counting peoples repeated posts then I vote for Fighter....AGAIN!!! |
| larry_the_titan01-04-08, 06:43 AM | You cheat! You are counting your own posts and that is 6 out of 21 posts. That is a large percentage to say 30 posts. If we are counting peoples repeated posts then I vote for Fighter....AGAIN!!! Well then I vote Druid again and toss on a vote for Artificer. With Druid all you need to pick up to make the character powerful is a monks belt and a Wilding Clasp so you have a Wisdom to your AC and with the Sirine's Grace spell which is on the Druid list you can get your charisma to your AC. So there you have a way to get both of your casting stats to AC. All you need now is to pick up the Natural Spell feat and your set. Artificers can do that to but the fact that Artificers' most important class feature is Charisma based even though their spell casting is Intelligence based. |
| navar10001-04-08, 07:02 AM | You had in mind a spellcaster, so stick with spellcasting. As a kobold sorcerer your theme was draconic. Kobolds believe in draconic heritage. You're its proof. Expand on that. As a spontaneous caster, you'll want something in addition that proves your draconic heritage. The answer is simple: Favored Soul. If you need a specific deity go with Bahamut, but even Io works. You might even get away with it just being dragon blood in general - you eventually get flight like dragons, energy resistance like dragons. Take the draconic heritage feats from complete arcane to complete the package. If you actually don't mind your other class not being a spellcaster, then your second class is still obvious - dragon shaman. You'll even have a breath weapon. |
| Grizzled Gryphon01-04-08, 08:04 AM | Well, there are some new entries. And no, I am NOT going to count votes from people that already voted, so there!! How can I be "cheating" when there aren't any rules? :P |
| larry_the_titan01-04-08, 09:18 AM | How can I be "cheating" when there aren't any rules? :P Well if there aren't any rules then just adding posts to the end of the list will bring this game to a close won't it. |
| TheEndIsNear01-04-08, 12:26 PM | Druid!!! maybe cleric... Mostly Druid! D-End EDIT: Scatch Cleric, Druid or Dragon Shaman! |
| VengefulGazeofGod01-04-08, 03:42 PM | And no, I am NOT going to count votes from people that already voted, so there!! How can I be "cheating" when there aren't any rules? :P But you just made a rule! So now you are a cheat and a lair! :p Still sticking with Fighter as it will, in the end, assist your primary class. Or maybe you can go Sorcerer/Wizard......!  |
| larry_the_titan01-06-08, 12:42 AM | Well It looks like Druid is going to win in and only one post after this till the end. |
| Grizzled Gryphon01-06-08, 06:18 AM | Well, at any rate, it is over. As of yesterday, I had to choose between Druid, Fighter, and Rogue. I thought of there were some good ways to randomly pick one of the three, like all the names in hat, or shortest straw, and many others. I ended up going with eeny meany miney moe. Meh, it was easist. Anywho, Rogue was the winner, so I am a sneaky little sorcerer (or, a more complicated Beguiler, take your pick). however, as I am going to do the Scorching Ray metamagic route, adding sneak attack damage couldn't hurt, could it? Well, actually, ti can hurt a LOT, but that would be the whole point. Thanks for all the help, everyone!! This was kind of fun... |
| UAMDB01-07-08, 03:30 PM | Actually; University of Alabama Million Dollar Band As to the spell failure, I am not sure off hand if it would negate it or not. Either way it would be very low. But it looks like you made your pick. I hope you enjoy it. |
