If the sorcerer seems a little underpowered how about making the wizard a spontaneous caster?

Apply the rule Spontaneous Divine Casters to the wizard class. The domain the spontaneous wizard uses is chosen from the Wizard Variant: Domain Wizard.

This sorcerer now gets a 2nd level spell at 3rd level (his or her domain spell) and keeps the wizard's bonus feats. This sorcerer loses the use of simple weapons (wizards have a more limited selection).

Whether the spontaneous wizard uses Int or Cha would also need to be decided. If Cha is used, the caster should use the sorcerer's skill list and if Int is used, use the wizard's skill list.

Two more ideas. If the spont. wizard uses Cha then they gain fighter feats in place of wizard feats. If you have access to the hexblade, you may want to also include the hexblade bonus feats as options as well.

Also, in place of Scribe Scroll or a combat feat at 1st level, the spont. wizard who uses Cha could take proficiency in all Simple weapons, then get bonus fighter/hexblade feats in place of future wizard bonus feats.

This sorcerer would have profiency in Simple weapons, sorcerer skills, fighter/hexblade feats, and domain spells. Similar in power to a wizard, but quite different in outlook and ability.

This sorcerer might also gain an animal companion rather than a familiar. With an emphasis on more combat, this switch makes sense. And a caster with Cha would seem to be able to attract an animal by force of personality rather than through a ritual like a standard wizard.

Or just use spell points. Everyone becomes a pseudo-spontaneous caster and the sorcerers have enough of an advantage (via more sp than any other class) to make up for it, nevermind they have access to more spells known per day than the other classes.

I think spell points finally lessened the "useless sorcerer" debate to non-existance...at least for my group.
