I'm talking about the Wizard variant found in page 59 of Unearthed Arcana :

"Gain: bonus feat list (as fighter; bonus feats gained at 1st level and every five levels as a wizard)"

Does this mean that if I use this variant, I gain fighter bonus feats at levels 1,2,4,6,8 etc. (like a fighter) or do I gain fighter bonus feats at levels 5,10,15 and 20 (like a wizard). The description is somewhat confusing as it says "as fighter" but also says "at 1st lvl and every 5 levels as a wizard".

I'm pretty sure you take fighter feats at 1st, 5th ect. You gain the fighter feat list, not fighter feat progression.

When your wizard would gain a bonus feat, he picks it off the Fighter list. But he still gains the bonus feats at the same times as any other wizard, he just chooses from a different list.

This is why the description, in addition to defining that the feat list is "as fighter", goes on to spell out that "bonus feats (are) gained at 1st level and every five levels as a wizard".

feats gained at 1, 5, 10, 15, 20. Feats chosen from are the fighter bonus feats.
