Valoy_Muniz 04-13-06, 01:36 PM	I have been thinking of letting on of my players get a NPC as his familer. The NPC would be always -3 level and could only take NPC classes. The player does have the impover familer feats so I was thinking about it. What do you all think?
Serin Ghar 04-13-06, 05:56 PM	As long as the NPC continues to advance as a normal famaliar would then it really doesn't make much of a difference. Now, if the familar was like an adapt or something... that's a different matter. Now the familar is adding to the wizard's ability to cast spells and might be able to heal on top of it... But then again, maybe the party needs that.
Witch 04-13-06, 06:00 PM	First, treating an NPC as a familiar is demeaning and humiliating. If he wants an NPC to follow him around, have him take Leadership. This would definitely be wrong in flavor, and wrong in balance.

Adam Smite 04-14-06, 12:10 AM	D20 Past (subset of rules for D20 Modern) has the Sidekick feat, which essentially gives you a Cohort that can be up to one level less than you rather than two less than you. No extra followers, which is a good thing. Other than that, there aren't many ways to get a single person to start following you around.

Some_call_me_Tim 04-14-06, 12:19 PM	I do not alow the leadership feat in my game as I do not want the players to have a whole army.Then it surely sounds like the player is trying to make an end run around that house rule. Besides, I wouldn't allow it on balance issues. The improved familiars by the book are CR 1/2 to CR 2 creatures. Even using NPC levels this 'familiar' would soon outstrip the others in power. If the NPC was 'stuck' at let's say level 3 then maybe. I too find the whole notion distasteful.
Darth Sephiroth 04-14-06, 01:59 PM	I've allowed it in certain situations. I've got a cat sorcerer with a human companion with commoner levels equal to his Sorcerer level. It's an interesting situation that causes wierd effects but is great fun if played right.

In fact, if I'm remembering correctly, the older additions of the mighty D&D game allowed you to take a human instead of a pet as your familiar. ... A cute white girl with pigtails as my familiar? Yes please!

That was the idea and most people won't expect it or really plan for it if played correctly. I mean what person would normally expect the animal to be the one chucking spells at you. The "familiar" would gain a few things earlier (speak with own kind at level 1, I switch it with Share Spells) The Familiar advances as a Commoner with his/her own HD and Advancement as a Commoner of the masters level in classes with the Summon Familiar ability gaining the Familiar Benefits when the "master" reaches the apropriate level in those classes.
