Would This Ranger Be Balanced? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am running an online gestalt game here soon and one of the players doesn't want a gestalt character, just a half-elf ranger. So, it got me to thinking about how best to compensate for the lack of additional class abilities and still keep the character a ranger.

Now, keep in mind this is the party so far.
Elf Bard/Wizard
Human Fighter/Rogue
Human Monk/Paladin
and one other unnamed character

This is the solution I came up with.
First off, the ranger gets to take both the normal and combat variants (combat variant ranger is listed in the Complete Warrior). Additionally, every five levels, the ranger gets a bonus feat (I was thinking of letting her choose from among mainly support feats, like the +2/+2 feats and stuff like Skill Focus) and finally, I was thinking of letting her start off with 1,000 gp so she can have extra items to compensate for lack of low-level abilities.

What do you think of this and are there any more simple ways to keep a character at pace with gestalt characters and be non-gestalt?

Why doesen't the player want gestalt? He could just take fighter, giving him d10 hd instead of d8, a bunch of feats to further improve archery or two-weapon fighting, and heavy armor proficiency.

None of those above contradicts with the ranger consept, it will just be a ranger that's even better at fighting than normal. And he doesen't have to use heavy armor, he can do fine in light armor.

You'd have to give alot more than you have done if you're going to compensate for non-gestalt, but do you really have to? Let the player be an underdog, the other character will be alot more versatile, but heck he chose it himself. And if he compains tell him you can give him fighter HD and feats, that's bascially being ranger/fighter gestalt anyway but don't tell him that.

Or what about a Gestalt Ranger/Druid? Same concept really or Ranger/Fighter. I have never used Gestalts. Seems so horribly powerful. Might be a fun challenge though. ;)
