The PHB states that players gain access to all 0 level spells. However with the proliferation of sourcebooks we now have a situation where there are considerably more first level spells than those listed in the PHB. I was wondering do GM's allow these players access to all these spells for free (after all theyre only 0 level). Or do they use the number of spells in the PHB as a guideline and let players choose any 0 level spells they want up to that number

You switch back and forth between speaking of zero-level spells and 1st-level spells..... it is confusing.

Not sure what a plethora of 1st-level spells in splat books has to do with zero-level spells in the PHB.... but, okay.

I let my casters have all zero-level spells from the PHB.

Spells from other books may be used with my consent and approval - after review.

In addition to this, zero-level spells need not be memorized and can be chosen spontaneously by the caster.

I usually go with the second one, if it's ever an issue.

However most are happy with: Light, Detect magic, read magic, prestidigitation, mage hand, mending. The rest, they don't care about so it isn't an issue. I personally like ray of frost for my arcane trickster I'm devising (yay sneak attack damage!)

I agree with Saiph. That's how it uusually is at my table. I could allow any 0-level spell ever written and still I have found the same 5 or 6 are always taken.

I allow players to use any spells form non-PHB sources that I ahve approved.

I give them access to all apporved 0th level spells...

I dont require them to memorize 0th level spells.

I let them cast more per day than what is listed in the PHB I ahve used 2 different methods.

1st method: you may cast 3+caster level 0th level spells per day

2nd method: you may add you spell casting attribute modifier to the number of 0th level spells you amy cast per day.

I think this gives a little more flavor and fun to the spell casters without making them too powerful.

as always YMMV
