My player has an archer character... he's loads of fun, leads the group, and is always fair to the rest of the players (often sacrificing himself, or his share of the treasure), last session the BBEG Kobold Sorcerer, used his last spell to escape; an Enlarged Dimension Door. He got away, a looong ways away... 1,400 ft. away, the archer character used his shiny new longbow, with both shots (rapid shot used) and rocked the Sorcerer from that range with both arrows, i said ok, y not, itll never happen again... wrong the next round the Sorc. sprints 80ft. (bringing the total distance to almost 1,500ft.)... the archer launches another shot, and crits, killing the sorcerer... longstory short, i want to award this player's character in game with some sort of honorable position or reward, from the Elves who were watching his miraculous shooting (that the Arcane Archers would most likely be baffled by!)from behind the trees, any ideas on a suitable treasure at 5th level?

I'd say it depends on level range... and really who the people are that are giving him the gift.

Most likely in terms of items it could be a bow, special arrows, or even a magic quiver that would be most appropriate.

As for titles, Hawkeye/Eagle Eye/Sureshot/First Archer/etc might be cool, but the type of title really revolves around the type of formalities and traditions of the particular community that would be naming him.

Hope that gives you an idea or two... just my two-cents.

Don't you have to have line of sight for those things? There were no tree's, bldgs, anything in the area???

What bow can shoot 1400+ feet?

How'd the archer manage to hit at that range? The maximum range for a longbow is 1000 feet. Does the archer have far shot or a weapon of distance? Even if he has the feat, that's 9 range increments (-18 to hit) at 1400 feet - not to mention any other modifiers.

Appropriate reward for a 5th level character for such a feat? Some sort of medal would be a good place to start. Make it a minor magical item that uses the amulet slot and provides a small bonus (+1 to AC or something of equivalent value).

Isn't a composite longbow + Far Shot + Distance ability = 330ft (3300ft max)? Do both Far Shot and Distance stack?

Tho I'd definately rule that LOS is necessary, and what terrain would give someone a LOS that far? Plains (6d6x40ft) maximum is like 1440 ft with no obstacles/weather/light complications.

yea, he has farshot, and he rolled 4 sixes when rolling his character which in my game becomes 20 stat, so his dex is 25 (elf, +2 dex item, +1 ability upgrade)

I think you may want to review the RAW cocerning Spot distances, bow ranges and so on. Until then,

I say even with a magical bow /and/ far shot, he should have had major negatives (I'm not sure the range of a long bow but I know it /can't/ shoot that far and if so, not nearly accuratly). He'd definatly need LOS (and how did he see where the kobold ended up anyways? Dimension Door could open anywhere within range. BTW Dex has nothing to do with the range of a bow, simply just makes you better with it.

And the max range of a longbow is 1000 feet? That doesn't sound right either. I think its less actually. 1000 feet seems a bit far.

Composite longbow has a range of 110ft. 110x10=1100ft shot possible at what, -18?

It's not really that the bow won't shoot that far, it's the terrain that will cut down on your ability to see the target (like I said prior, according to DMG Wilderness (Plains) maximum spot distance is 6d6x40ft, max of which is 1440 feet).

With Far Shot and Distance on the bow, that would allow you to shoot it at a maximum of like 3300 feet (assuming they stack, which I think they do).

Additionally... available light and weather make a difference as well...

Most likely this shot would have at least had a 20% if not 50% miss chance if only because there's a good chance that there was at least one existing condition (heavy wind, obstacle, darkness, etc) to hamper the shot.

But what's done is done. And the player should be congradulated on his success. ;)

How'd the archer manage to hit at that range?

Hrm,

A +1 Dragonbone (+20) Composite Greatbow of Distance (130x2) = 280
With the Far Shot feat (280*.50)+280 = 420
4 levels of Cragtop Archer (RoS) = only -1 to spot checks for every 20 feet rather than every 10, max range incremints increased to 15, and the ability to shoot (as a full-round action) at max range with no penalty

= 6,300 ft. shot with no penalties

It's easy to be a D&D sniper :P

I've had an 8th level PC take down a target at a greater distance than that, although in his case it was with an Iron Kingdoms rifle rather than a bow. He had line of sight because the target was flying, and the hit was a crit. Still wasn't easy though. :)

My PC's 'reward' for that and killing an ogre mage the next session was to have his gun nerfed. Which, technically, I agreed with. The spectacular events were their own reward to my mind, and even nerfed he remained a highly effective and fun character.

I have that feeling the Cragtop Archer is yet another completely broken PRC....
ANd being able to shoot 6300? *grrrsss*.

Max range is 10xrange of bow? with or without negatives?

OK, sounds great, but the OP clearly stated:

the archer character used his shiny new longbow,

So no composite greatbow involved here. I'm not familiar with the Cragtop Archer class. Is it a base class or a PrC? If it's a PrC, how does a PC take it at 2nd level to got the 4 levels you mention in the class at a Character Level 5?

There was no mention of enchantment on the bow or feats other than rapid shot.

Congratulations on allowing your players to have the opportunity to be heroic.

I would consider giving him a Quiver of Ehlonna, it isn't an overpowering magic item and is something Elves would have.

Also, if you wanted to give him a choice, you might go with the Quiver, eyes of the eagle (bonus to spot I think), and lesser bracers of archery. (I am pretty sure these aren't overpowering items.)

Suitable treasure for this? Absolutley nothing.

The player got lucky on the dice, nothing more, and it certainly does not merit a fiscal reward in-game. It makes for a good anecdote and you should treat it as such.

As word gets out he'll likely be a bit of a local legend - like the guy in some Podunk little town who scored the last-second touchdown to win the big game back in 1984 - and he'll easily be able to parlay that into free drinks at the local bars and perhaps a few casual rolls with a certain type of "lady".

You can even have some fun with it if the player lets his PC's ego get out of hand. Have the legend grow over time until eventually it has him dropping a Beholder a mile out. Let the legend grow so big he can never hope to live up to it.

I'd give him a reward--count it as part of the treasure for the encounter. Sure, it was just luck, in our world; but in the game world it was incredibly skilled shooting. It would be a bit metagaming not to have the elves give him anything--even if it's only a medal or a higher social status among them.

Oh, and having the legend grow till it's out of proportion is a really funny idea. :)

Suitable reward(s)?

1. Free drinks at the local tavern (as suggested by Sulaco)
2. More adventure/job offerings from people looking for adventurers
3. Invitations to participate in archery contests at local festivals
4. Some more free drinks at not-so-local taverns
5. The attention of young ladies in the area
6. The attention of hot-shot archers looking to duel it out and become the top-dog in the neighborhood
7. The attention of THE hot-shot archer looking to take out any up-and-coming young hotshots

Take care and have a great day....

suitable reward? ... how about a quiver of mithral headed arrows? ... (house rule they count as silver)

even better ... some dragonbone arrows (draconomicon) ... they're MW arrows that deal an extra +1 of damage based on the dragon they were created from.

acid: black/copper/green
fire: gold/brass/red
cold: while/silver

etc

the damage is Extraordinary and not magical to boot. Not a super reward but pretty cool. Until a dragon finds out ...

Some other consequences of his shot:

1. People are constantly asking him to "prove it" or to repeat the shot under bizarre circumstances.
2. Robin Hood challenges him to an archery contest :D
3. Howard Hill adopts him. (Note: Howard Hill was a RL archer and probably the best bowhunter this planet has ever seen. He went hunting in Africa and took three elephants -- yes, elephants -- with four arrows. Not four arrows per elephant. Four arrows *total* :OMG! )

On how he did it.. long bow 100 feet, far shot *1.5 thus we are at 150 per range increment

150*10= 1500. -18 to hit though

LoS would be problem, but meh the DM let him try (he wasnt going to hit... or so he thought) cept he rolled a crit, auto hit. Confirmed? i doubt it, but possibly enough dmg to drop it, thus entirly possible.

reward. some minor items, maybe some special material arrows, or the prestige ranking.. that way he remembers it (especally if the story factor) but it doesnt help him out too much just for having some hot hands on the dice

...it's the terrain that will cut down on your ability to see the target (like I said prior, according to DMG Wilderness (Plains) maximum spot distance is 6d6x40ft, max of which is 1440 feet)...

Point of order: the "maximum spotting distance" mentioned in the DMG refers to the maximum range at which two parties travelling in the wilderness first notice each others' proximity. A person travelling outside that range doesn't become invisible if under continuous observation - at least I wouldn't rule any such thing: the closest analogue I am aware of in the rules is trying to make a Hide check while under direct observation. ("You watch him until he is just a tiny dot in the distance...")

Instead, my quibble with this miraculous shooting is this: a Spot check (with full range penalties) should probably have been required to "acquire" the sorceror after his dimension door. (Though a modifier of -4 to -10 to the DC would have been in order, assuming that dimension door produces a flash or other visual effect which could have drawn the characters' attention.) I'd probably say that any teleportation beyond an area of... oh, say 120' in good illumination... would require such a check.

Now that the deed is done, however, I don't think the character needs any special rewards (other than the new name / reputation suggestions that have already been made.) Trust me, the player'll treasure the memory without the need for any reward.

Modern Comound Bows today only shoot maximum 850 yards. (2550 feet). Longbows only shot 300 yards (900 feet).

Now magic comes into play.. then sure.. farther could be possible.

Now see my problem is that in archery your arrows are made of certain grains, ranging from 250 on up. The more grain, the heavier the arrow, the more mass, the less range it has, BUT it has more penetrating power and is less likely to break on impact.

Just thought this thread needed a bit of realism... a D&D class archer being able to do 3x what a modern compound bowman could do.. kinda unrealistic, but when magic is involved.. oh well I guess..

Thisis one of those "one in a (insert big number here)" situations, like chucking a basketball full court and getting the game winning 3 pointer. He should acquire a lot of prestige and fame for the feat, and maybe a token small item (An amulet that grants a +1 insight bonus on bow shots sounds fair).
