Now we are playing a new campaign (since I kicked out the disruptive player (see my Rant about insane player post) and yes now I'm down to 2 PCs) and and he is playing a dragon, its a homebrew dragon design, its not as powerful as normal dragons (and its only medium) becuase she was curesed by her god, it also casts as a wizard rather than sorcerer. Well anyway in my campaign setting their is a race that worships the dragon gods as well (that arnt dragons themselves) and they would not like this dragon so much, with being out of favor of their gods and all, 2 powerful memebers of this religon (level 5s) would be hunting the PC dragon to prove themselves to their gods. One is a Lv. 5 Fighter and the other is a Lv. 5 Sorcerer and both have flying mounts, Giant Eagles since they are native to that area. The Fighter would be an Archer with WF (CLB), WS (CLB), Point Blank Shot, Far Shot and Rapid Shot. Is it cheap to have them use Far and Rapid shot (thats 2 attacks that will hit for sure, from a range of 165 feet dealing 1d8+3 damage each) and the Sorcerer would be casting Enlarged Scorching Rays at them, IIRC Enlarge is only +1 spell level, if not it will be Magic Missiles). It sounds really brutal to me, I've seen 8 lv. 1 Kobold warriors with only +4 to hit with light crossbows take out 2 Ogers becuase they had enouph range to kill them before they got close and I dont see this as any differnt. If a level 4 PC can get a +1 Comp Long Bow of Seeking why cant a level 5 NPC who is funded by their church? As far as the Sorcerer goes its this Races fav. Class so it makes sence of one to be going with them. Heres the other thing though, the Dragon PCs rider, a level 6 Gnome Ranger (the other PC) will also have a +1 Comp Long Bow of Seeking so its not like the playing feild...errrr...air isn't level, they could drop the Fighter or Sorcerers mount no problem. PS: Has anyone even been in a party where the Archer type didn't use a bow of seeking? I havent, in fact I have know players who have played all Str Archers with Comp Long Bows of Seeking with 10 Dex, cause I havent, like if we started at low levels yes dex was their Primary stat but starting past 6 they always did that. |

You really might want to do that, and review the penalties for shooting while riding a critter. I'd also consider the fact that if they are at high altitudes, there may be some environmental factors involved. And when calculating range, remember: when flying, you have 3, not 2, dimensions to work out on a grid-map. The dragon could nose-dive suddenly enough, and gain a lot of distance. If you are afraid you're still being too harsh on the PC, either dump up their race package a touch, or bump down a feat or two on the two foes. Also, bows of Seeking can be nice, but why bother? It's rather expensive to buy a bow with all that, compared to, say, a wand of magic missile (at sufficient level to have 5 missiles). If I'm trying to automatically hit something, I'm going to automatically hit it, not beat around the bush with grandiose weapons and stuff. Just my two pennies... |

The reson I just dont go with a Wand of Magic Missile is becuase a) the Fighter Cant use one and b) neither can the sorcerer, I use a home brew sorcerer that has huge number of spells per day so giving them addtional ones at the low price of a Wand is broken, this race also has an Int penaty so they would be no wizards to speak of to use the wands. |
