Using his intellect he managed to gain control of a large hive of Phase Wasps in the swamplands near an Ogre village. Bedask and his Phase Wasps collected arcane documents from the local Ogre Mages for food and for making their nests, and he and the hive gained magical powers from the sorcerous paper. All Phase Wasps can cast Ray of Frost at will as a free action without any components needed as a spell-like abilty, each wasp can also cast Poison 1/day and Heat Metal 1/day. For any purpose, they cast as a 1st Level spellcaster. They have +2 INT as well. Each have +1 1/2 to their CR. Bedask himself wants to attain more sorcery by attacking a farther away elven village to gain more magic and someday be able to cast Polymorph Self on himself and come back to Centaur form. How's that? Hi, I am new here. |

| BRJN10-24-03, 09:20 PM | <no number> Generic: the King of a foreign land. This gives us the King, a dozen Earls, hundreds of Sir Whatzizname, and thousands of just plain soldiers. Each soldier is an L1 NPC. He has basic equipment and a friend or two along. He could be a Fighter or Rogue. Sir Whatzizname has himself, good equipment, a mount, and 3-20 soldiers. He can be any class. An Earl has excellent equipment, a cool mount, some nifty (magical) items, and an entourage (each a Sir Whatzizname). The King himself should be the highest-level guy in the land. His 4-10 personal bodyguards always come along. Best equipment in the rulebook (hey, he's rich). A half-dozen Earls within earshot. Use: The King has a plan. He sends minions to carry it out. The PCs somehow goof up one of them. Word goes back up the chain of command, and a Soldier is sent to deal with the problem. Repeat - going higher up food chain each time - until the King declares war on the PCs' homeland in order to get at the PCs (possibly for the maiming of his favorite Earl). Climactic final battle also decides the war. |
| danman10-25-03, 11:38 AM | No. 24 Jarl Girion, CE Half Dragon (White) Frost Giant A cruel and dominating creature, Girion lords over his fellow frost giants. He has enough power to force them to work together, or even to raise an army of cold weather creatures. Relatively unknown outside of his icy lands, but one day he may march south to bring eternal winter. Wields a frost fullblade +2 in two hands for a lot of damage. Can also breathe ice shards. CR 11, can be made stronger by adding sorcerer levels |
| Azar10-25-03, 12:42 PM | Number 25 and 26 Alioeen Female NE tiefling Wizard 12/Acolyte of the Skin 2 and Skree'ect Male CE Death Slaad Assassin 3 Alioeen was always a viscous and cruel conspiritor in the Calmiport hierarchy, but, as she continued to delve into the secrets of conjuration and summoning, a voice from beyond the realms slowly called to her. The voice is that of Skree'ect, a rogue Death Slaad who flees from the lords of limbo, and seeks sanctuary in the city of Calimport. Alioeen has taken it upon herself to enslave this being (or so she thinks) and use it to her advantage when climbing the treachorous ladders of the Calmiport hierarchy. Skree'ect is all too eager to comply at first, for he is now in the mortal realms far from his past lords, able to kill any he wishes. Skree'ect soon began to use Alioeen's ambitions against her, whispering to her secrets and promises of dark power, secrets of the skin. He gave her the means to summon and bind a hezrou to her soul and skin in the ritual of blasphemy, a hezrou loyal to Skree'ect, thus putting Skree'ect's plans into motion. In order to control her, he feeds her knowledge of the skins slowly, piece by piece, and along with the hezrou's influence, Skree'ect has gained the upper hand in his and Alioeen's relationship. Now the death Slaad uses the power hungery Alioeen as a front to spread chaos on the streets of calimport. |

| Kage Wellby10-25-03, 02:02 PM | Just list the core classes (other than Paladin and Bard) on a sheet of paper, along with your favorite Prestive Classes. Get 20 total. Roll 1d20 for your bad guy. Try to set them up like the NPCs in the DMG, so that you can quickly upgrade them. HINT: So they aren't pushovers compared to the PCs, give these NPCs a powerful race as a base, such as a demon or devil, undead, etc. This prevents you from having to load them down with treasure so that they are at least a little challenging to the group. Also, make notes of particularly neat tricks the PCs pull on you/your NPCs. Do the same thing to them in a couple weeks. It makes them start to reconsider their really cool ideas, because you can always toss them back at the players. Another thing I'll do is number some of the tastier types on the ranger's favored enemy list, roll a dice to decide, then pick something. Of course, I'm REALLY big on non standard monsters, like epic level griffons with 50HD, Illithid Psions, Beholder Rogues, stuff like that. One of the more interesting BBEMs of mine was an Imp Sorceror, who had an Imp Familiar from Improved Familiar, and had Leadership and a harem of imps. I made some base rules for how they would swarm the players and how each would assist the other. The party was 6th level at the time and thought that the wizard would fireball all the imps into oblivion, but the sorceror just countered the wizard's fireballs. I did that to prove a point, that even a fireball slinging wizard could be foiled by a lowly imp. |
| bshugg10-25-03, 02:48 PM | 28. A Wizard with dual personalities one Lawful Evil and one Lawful good. Both personalities are aware of each other and hate each other, but will work together sometimes to avoid detection and in the quest to seperate their bodies. The Lawful good part will try to lessen any damage the evil part does, and even hire the PC's to keep him in check, but if the party gets too close he will lead them astray to keep his plans from getting unraveled. The Lawful Evil part tries to find some evil ritual to split the bodies into 2 parts. The party must stop him, but for some reason he always seems to be 2 steps ahead of them, and when they get a lead he is already gone and only has left his minions behind to fight them. In my campaign specifically it was: Vortex Moonstone LG Wizard 9 wears white robs and carries a White wooden staff of power, and defensive magics. and Vorpal LE Wizard 9, wears Black hooded robe and mask, and carries a "glamered" version of the staff so that it looks like a shard of jagged black iron. The staff is one of the keys to unraveling the mystery, because finally at one time he will mess up and change the color but leave it wood, or the party will see vortex with a white iron staff. |
| Mazarick10-26-03, 01:57 AM | This is a great thread! Cher-rot the Magnificent. NE Goblin Wizard 12. Fond of Magic Missiles. Has an ogre barbarian 6 as a mount. Uses a magic crossbow every three rounds over the shoulder of the ogre. Also somehow has a dire bat as a familiar. Bwahahaha |

| CL10-26-03, 04:26 PM | How about the fallen Hero? Great for PCs because the vast majority of the general populace still thinks their a hero and will be on the "hero's" side. Even the party might assume he is still good. A classic example is the paladin->blackguard, but any class with an alignment change wiould suffice. So, 32. Cirian CE Elven Ranger 8; Cirian, from a child, loved the forests that composed his homeland. As he grew, he became a protector of the woodlands, fighting against anyone who wished to despoil his forest, and protecting those with good intentions who happened to pass through. However, as he became more sucessful, he was able to protect a larger portion of the forest, until, he came to the end of the woods. He saw settlements approaching, cutting down trees, burning clearings, scarring his land. The very travelers he was protecting where destroying his land, so he moved to destroy them, turning dangerous beasts loose on settlements, and ambushing parties along the paths which cross his domain. He leaves no survivors, and no witnesses of his actions. He fights his battle in secret, as even his own people seem to still think that civilization's actions are warranted. People now wonder where their elven hero has gone, if even he is able to stop the new menace. |
| Grimbot10-27-03, 04:42 PM | 33. (From my current campaign) Count Lipohas Nathrach (LE), Human Ex-Paladin and Wizard. Once part of an order of knights sworn to hunt down evil mages, Liophas got on the bad side of his king when he fell in love with the king's betrothed (and she with him). The bigger issue, of course, was that the woman in question, Duchess Cliodan Veldana, was destined by prophecy to marry the king. When the king confronted Liophas, the Paladin slew the king, broke the prophecy, and seriously ****** off his god. Liophas and Cliodan were cursed as serpents forevermore, with Liophas becoming a giant cobra by night, and Cliodan becoming a giant viper by day. Never again would they see each other or hold each other in their arms as man and woman. Nor could they die, always reappearing whole and alive beside each other no matter what trajedy might befall them. Liophas is a hard-headed fellow and has devoted two centuries to attempts at breaking the curse. The two lovers are still in love, but Liophas has taken a bit of a moral slip. He's completely rejected his god and hisformer kingdom, and while he's still devoted to upholding the ideals of Law he's come to see other people as mere pawns in a game to break the curse. Once a fierce opponent of magic, he now employs its use liberally in hopes of breaking the curse. He's always on the lookout for potent magical items or artifacts that he can either use himself to break the curse, or bribe a powerful entity with to obtain their aid. He won't harm "common folk", but his definition of what that means is also on a slippery slope, especially when it interferes with his plans. One of his greatest fears is that Cliodan will discover some of the horrible things he's done in the name of love. In order to prevent this, he has several constructs in his employ who are ordered to keep people away from Cliodan "for her own safety". Liophas first showed up in my campaign trying to bargain for a near-worthless ring that allowed one of our PCs empathy with reptiles. For obvious reasons Liophas wanted it, and the PCs refused to let them have it. He later stole it, and hearing of their plans to recover a powerful artifact Liophas beat the PCs to the punch and stole it himself. He's been a thorn in their sides ever since. |
