| Loki_God'o'Chaos04-27-06, 11:58 PM | Alright, well, I recently started doing this in my game. Why some of you may ask yourselves, because they are ticking me off. They continuously take the same foolish actions (I have had 8 TPKs in the past month, and we play once a week) So, I recently started this, whenever a player takes an incredibly dumb, repiditivly dumb, or alignment oppossing action, I roll a d% and hand them the effect. My players may, by majority vote, elect to force another player to recieve a punishment, this is normally done for the reasoning that the player does something that I missed or some incredibly jerky action to the party. One of my fellow local DMs has begun using this same list in his games, and told me I should place it on the internet for others to see and judge. Be warned, not all of these are all that great. So, I present to you: Loki's List of Player Punishments 1. Triple Header: Roll agian three times 2 1d6 permanent damage to all stats 3. Reverse lawful and chaotic standing 4. | Wolfpack04-28-06, 12:34 AM | This deserves a mention on the 1001 ways to tell you're an evil DM thread. |
| Last City04-28-06, 12:35 AM | Man! this is scary already! can i copy this thread to "Have you scared a player" thread!!!??? By the way good list there for reference too :D |
| myeviltwin04-28-06, 01:19 AM | Once I told an inattentive player that unless he started paying attention to what went on in the game I would adjust his character's wisdom score until it reflected his level of perception. Never actually had to do it. |
| KnightErrant04-28-06, 01:24 AM | *dives for cover* Wow that list is scary! I hope I will never see anyone use this list unless absolutely neccessary What exactly did your PCs do to force you to create this list besides many TPKs? |
| Azezel04-28-06, 05:21 AM | Listen Sir, Maybee I'm reading this wrong, maybee you have a table full of psychotic CN idiots and this is the only way to keep them in line - but if this is the case, you probably deserve each other. Have you considered regarding your players as fellow Humans? But then again - most creatures of Human-like intelligense would quit about 14 seconds after you whipped out your Table 'o' Vile Darkness. |
| Loki_God'o'Chaos04-29-06, 11:47 PM | Starting with Knights thing. Yes, they have done many an annoying thing. You see, I run my game in my house. I am 16 and thusly, live with my parents. Every week, I have to clean up before and after the game, and I have to TRY to keep my players in line during the meantime. They persist in throwing dice at eachother, making obscene noises and gestures, and just being downright unkind to one another. This is my way of trying to get these jerkwads to maybe straighten up a little, at least during my games. I am actually the second youngest person there. The only person younger than me is the female player, and she is only behind me by a month or two. Oh, by the way, did I mention what caused the TPKs? Creatures with ECLs of 3 or lower, and the party is level 10!!! And for you Azezel. I have always regarded my players as fellow humans. After all, they are a bunch of people I have had as friends since Pre-K. And so you know, I have in current circulation somewhere in the vicinity of 12 copies of this list, Throughout the world. This is nothing too major, especially if you know what your doing with it. Most players learn their lessons within one or two rolls on the list. And I may have no specified the usage in which the list came to occur. It is only used when the entire party votes the player onto the roll for an increddibly stupid action, or when the player breaks one of the essential rules set up by the DM ahead of time. PS. Please refrain from referencing my list with that waterdown book of weakling pansiness, thank you. |
| Auburn04-30-06, 01:51 AM | I like this. You should make it bigger so it takes a full d100 or something. What happens if someone lands on "Next level is Whatever" and they're already going to be that next level? If players are told of this when they join and when you start new campaigns it seems like a great thing since it requires a unanimous player vote. Let DM be the only one to propose it. Then people who just do what they want without concern for everyone else's fun can suffer for it and hopefully learn better before it gets to the point where everyone decides to kick them out of the group. And if the person's sole reason for playing is to mess everyone else up they'll quit playing pretty soon. Great idea! |
| katarl04-30-06, 05:16 AM | One of our worse dms just drop characters down random pits when he's unhappy with a player. Generally, I like the more subtle, ironic approach to party punishment, that teaches them the error of their ways. Party killing ruins the fun for people, even blackguards must put up with paladins, regardless of 'what your character would do'. A non-lethal approach is best. Having to wait for players to stop bickering is annoying. I let them continue until they realise that they're not actually playing. This is somewhat more convincing to them than merely threatening their character, which usually leads to walk-outs. I usually have a rp session with the player whos not involved in the bickering while it continues. However, a big table of dm punishments would be a great standard way of sorting out players- oh dear, i think i may have to roll my d100- oh no, don't! we'll change! |
| hmmmm04-30-06, 06:59 AM | How do those people play to get 8 TPKs? |
| Stafir Ortnev04-30-06, 11:14 AM | Hokay, *pops his knuckles* lets get to crackin, mwaa ha ha haaaa. :cheer: :w00t: :schemes: :mage: :plotting: Yadatada!!! 1 -- You develop a phobia of the DM's choice. Treated the same as if rebuked when in the presence what they become afraid of. 2 -- You become a hamster. Size reduced to diminutive (unarmed strike becomes 1d1, +4 AC, +4 melee bonus, melee weapons shrink with you and become d1 weapons, better weapons can be made but must be masterwork and cost 10 times normal, move speed reduced to 10 but can be carried in someone's pocket or on someone's shoulder with no weight penalty, automatically critically fail all intimidate checks, retain speech abilities but voice shifts several octaves higher, +20% arcane spell failure, -8 to strength, +2 dexterity, +2 to charisma, weapon finesse is denied to this species). 3 -- You are hit with the ugly stick. Charisma becomes 4 until Heal is cast. And yes, the ugly stick does have the ability to make some half-orcs look better. 4 -- You must now carry all of your money in copper pieces. 5 -- Roll the d4. 1, you turn blue. 2, you turn green. 3, you turn purple. 4, you turn tie-die. 6 -- You are given a bag of holding, but you must sleep in it (unlimited air supply). You must also buy a ladder if you intend to get out on your own. If you cannot afford one, you will have to rely on your friends to help you out. This does allow you to be easily "stolen." 7 -- You become the familiar of a player of the DM's choice. Does not replace player's existing familiar. 8 -- Your appearance becomes that of a troll until lesser restoration is cast. Speaking eloquently makes anyone who does not know you to roll for a will save of disbelief (DC 6) or faint from the shock. 9 -- Complete class change of DM's choice. 10 -- Strength and Wisdom switch. 11 -- Wisdom and Charisma switch. 12 -- Sudden alignment change of DM's choice. 13 -- You are given an item with an enchantment and an amusing curse, example, a +2 bow that always fires arrows backwards or a +1 longsword that will only do damage if you hit the enemy with the flat side of the blade. 14 -- Species change of DM's choice. 15 -- All your clothing becomes ethereal. 16 -- Continual flame (heatless flame) is cast on your hair. (DM chooses between facial hair or hair on your head. This persists until dispel magic is cast. This does act as a torch, giving you 30 feet of light in all directions.) 17 -- Random stranger slaps you with a large trout dealing 1d4 subdual damage and disappears without a trace. -- Thanks Dave 18 -- No matter how much cover you have for your feet, any form of floor tickles you so much that you are unable to participate in combat. Persists for 2 days. 19 -- You become monosyllabic. -- Thanks Demisane 20 -- A golf ball strikes you in the head from out of nowhere. A loud, booming voice then echoes from the heavens above: "Fore!" -- Thanks Jaimas 21 -- You believe that you are 5 feet taller than you are and behave accordingly. 22 -- A small thundercloud forms over the your head and follows them wherever they go, raining constantly. On rare occasions, it strikes people nearby, including the host, with a 1HP lightning bolt. -- Thanks Jaimas 23 -- Gender switch. This is permanent and can only be undone by limited wish, wish, miracle, or another DM Wrath. 24 -- You fall in love with a party member of the DM's choice. Can be cured by limited wish, wish, or miracle, but not by the person affected. -- Thanks Gerdef 25 -- 2 sizes smaller (height divided by 4). 26 -- Can only walk backwards (can still fight forwards, just can't advance forwards). 27 -- Oil of Slipperyness is stuck to your feet. Shoes will not stay on and walking is a reflex save of DC 20 for every 5 feet. -- Thanks Jaimas 28 -- Every step you take makes a fart noise. -- Thanks Jaimas 29 -- Cannot stop sweating. Must drink 8 glasses of water a day or suffer dehydration. -- Thanks Gerdef 30 -- Cannot stop giggling until the DM relents. -- Thanks Gerdef 31 -- Every time you look in the mirror, you become convinced that you're naked. -- Thanks Gerdef 32 -- You are teleported 20 feet in the air. Rogues, bards and monks get tumble checks DC 18. If you are inside, you are thrown into the ceiling by an unseen force, incurring the same damage. -- Thanks Jaimas 33 -- You flinch at the sound of a word of the DM's choice. -- Thanks Demisane 34 -- You sing in your sleep. -- Thanks Demisane 35 -- Your weapon becomes intelligent. However, all it does on its own will is talk back to you. 36 -- You have a wooden cat that you carry with you wherever you go and talk to it as if it were your best friend. You must narrate everything that happens to it. -- Thanks Zach 37 -- You are convinced that you are a god and must spread the word. -- Thanks Gerdef 38 -- Every time you meet someone who has blonde hair, you act like a squirrel. -- Thanks Gerdef 39 -- All spells you cast make everything in a 10 foot radius beige. 40 -- You become invisible except for your brain. -- Thanks Gerdef 41 -- At the beginning of each day roll the d20 and divide by 10. That is the multiplier for gravity that you experience for that day. Permanent effect. -- Thanks Gerdef 42 -- Ford Prefect joins your party. 10th level Rogue, 10th level Gate Crasher (like a rogue, but has a good save of Fort and Will and can open portals like a rogue can pick locks). Chaotic Neutral, but heavy emphasis on the chaotic. 43 -- Can only talk in shrieks. -- Thanks Gerdef 44 -- All equipment becomes bright pink. -- Thanks Gerdef 45 -- Pants or other leg coverings fall down. No belt will hold them up for 3 days. -- Thanks Gerdef 46 -- Every stick you find you must point north. 47 -- You must always wear your clothes inside out (armor does not apply). -- Thanks Gerdef 48 -- You get an chipmunk familiar that you call Zim. Does not replace existing familiar. 49 -- You talk in 3rd person. -- Thanks Gerdef 50 -- Simple objects become animated while you touch them. Example, a chair may push you off itself. -- Thanks Gerdef 51 -- Must perform a silly ritual (example: acrobatics) before an attack. -- Thanks Gerdef 52 -- You cannot remember your name. -- Thanks Demisane 53 -- Race changes daily to DM's choice. -- Thanks Gerdef 54 -- You become anime style (big eyes, small nose and mouth). 55 -- You go chibi (size -1, height divided by 2, and you develope a taste for candy). -- Thanks Gerdef 56 -- You hear constant laughter for 1 week. -- Thanks Gerdef 57 -- You can never enter a building through a door. -- Thanks Gerdef 58 -- Chronic incandescence for one week. 59 -- A flower grows on your head. When removed, it grows back. The flower cannot be concealed by clothing or armor. Can only be permanently removed by miracle, limited wish or wish. 60 -- You get mouth on your hand that is opposite to you in personality. -- Thanks Chris 61 -- You smell like a tasty sandwich. -- Thanks Chris 62 -- You are given and must wear goggles that make you look like a bug. 63 -- You become convinced that you smell horribly, irrelevant of whether or not you do. You must bathe twice a day to avoid embarrassement. 64 -- You are given a wild rod of wonder that you cannot get rid of. -- Thanks Gerdef 65 -- You grow a tail. -- Thanks Chris 66 -- You become terrified that your mother will find out what you've been up to, irrelevant of whether or not you've done anything. -- Thanks Gerdef 67 -- When you walk through a door, there is a 50% chance that you will walk right back out. -- Thanks Gerdef 68 -- Squirrel shower you with nuts. -- Thanks Brooke 69 -- Armor always gives you a wedgey. Oh yeah before I forget. Its from this (http://www.geocities.com/whoisceres2/) page at the funny quotes from DND (http://www.geocities.com/whoisceres2/dndquotes.html) link..so yeah..I didn't make the list..heh  |
| Analysis04-30-06, 02:29 PM | ... well be what is needed in you type of game/gaming group; everyone does things the way it works for them. That said, there are things about this that would cause trouble as I see it. Of all the things in the list, there are no logical in-character reasons why any of it should happen - every punishment requires something like random divine intervention to explain it, and is neither connected with the character it hits, what has happened previously in the game, or what the setting is like. As such, I would expect that any of these punishments would make it even harder to actually roleplay, since you would need to play around something that cannot be explained in-game. Why am I a druid suddenly? It does not fit with my backstory, and all of a sudden it becomes more difficult to play according to my motivations, alignment etc. rather than less. Your mileage may, of course, vary. |
| Stafir Ortnev04-30-06, 03:46 PM | I think the point he wanted was to keep players in line..not really to promote roleplaying. He needs them to calm down, not goof off, and not make a mess. I get the feeling that to them this game isn't really all that serious so they can goof off in game and make it fun. This is probably one of the few group structures where an arrow to the neck..won't actually be detrimental to the play experience...as the players will shrug it off, roll up a new char ( to be put into the party in odd ways) and continue on their merry way. |
| dengarbountyhunter04-30-06, 04:52 PM | 1) Constrictor Codpiece (no precision needed, I think). 2) you teleport from one point to another every 2 seconds for one full day. you cannot do anything else than be angry. 3) you are followed by a horde of invincible bagpipe-playing trolls for a week 4) every time you sneeze, you explode violently. It takes 1d4 rounds to reconstitute but there are no other inconvenients 5) every NPC says: "shhh, he's there!" when you arrive somewhere 6) you receive a hail of rotten tomatoes every time you speak 7) you become aerophobic and are thrown into the Elemental Plane of Air 8) same thing, but hydrophobia in the Elemental Plane of Water 9) you gain the marshmallow template (most attacks don't damage you but fire makes you taste better) 10) you just step on the sleeping Tarrasque's tail 11) you realise you wanted to be a farmer and quit adventuring |

| Tenet_Khan04-30-06, 09:08 PM | Nice ideas... there are some really evil ones in there... I noticed some Magic:The Gathering card references in there, those captions can be fantastic :D . |
| Loki_God'o'Chaos05-01-06, 09:11 PM | Auburn - They reroll if they are already of the class. Katarl- I tried the whole dropping them in vile encounters and pits ect. option before making the list, it failed misserably. Hmmmmm- They play worse than 9 chimpanzees and a Tortoise. Stafir- Thank you for bring forth this list, I believe if enough of these lists pop up then Dragon, Dungeon, or Wizards will actually put out an official one. Maybe, or all of us will just consulodate our lists. Analysis- I understand how your looking at it, and your right, some of these are completly irrelevant to anything, and thus when I update consolodate or whatever this list, they will be opted out. However, more so than not, all of these fit in well in the Campaign world I run Stafir (agian)- Your are very right Dengar and Darkuwa- Not exactly sure what to say there, but yeah, thanks guys for your inputs, etc. Tenet- Of course their are evil ones in there, I am Loki. And yes, I did use some magic el gatherio references. Just because they were usable and helped me out..........Fire NEVER dies alone!!!! |

Best....punishemnt......EVER!
