| mathboyzld03-21-08, 07:31 PM | This was inspired by the following description in the "What do you like as a player?" thread (post by Geekling): a little magic spoon, that if you stir a cup of cold water with it, turns the water in the cup into steaming hot cocoa. Because those items are much more useful to 99.99% of people in the campaign world than a +5 vorpal longsword, I think that more of them are needed. 1. A magical ring that rings every time you are going to be late for something important if you don't hurry. (This is limited to what the user knows or once knew.) If you can, try to make them useful to adventurers. (for example, the spoon can be used to produce heat in conjunction with create food or water) |
| themocaw03-21-08, 07:54 PM | 2. A magically sharpened +1 plow. Grants a +1 circumstance bonus to Profession: Farmer checks to plow fields. Particularly wealthy farmers can put down the extra gold for a +1 "Dancing" plow which does not require the use of oxen, but automatically begins plowing the field when a command word is spoken. 3. Quill Pen of Endless Ink: a quill pen, capped with a gold nib, magically linked to the elemental plane of ink or something similar. Upon being dipped in any liquid (including water or saliva) it immediately transforms a tiny quantity of said liquid into ink. 4. Mirror of Fashionable Visage: A mirror that, when touched, portrays the activator after a makeover that would be most flattering for their individual skin tone, body proportions, etc. Certain skilled users can also compensate for various special events (holidays, upper-class functions, etc). Although it doesn't actually transform the user, the advice fashion advice it gives can be invaluable. 5. Nerissa's Bookmark of Placekeeping: A small slip of horn, ivory, or card about four inches long and one inch wide, inscribed with mystic runes and decorated with a tassel made out of a thin, magically enchanted ribbon. In order to attune it to a certain book, the bookmark must be kept inside the front cover for one week's time, during which it indexes the contents of the book according to various keywords and subjects. Once attuned, the user may cause the book to immediately flip to a desired page by speaking a command word. Especially useful in conjunction with a Boccob's Blessed Book: simply speak the name of the spell, and the bookmark will immediately turn to that page. Makes it a lot easier to memorize your spells, instead of having to hunt through a thousand pages looking for the spell you want. 6. Chow's Toothpick of Dental Hygiene: a small sliver of wood that, when placed in the mouth and chewed upon for a minute, casts a small cantrip that causes the teeth and gums to be cleaned, polished, and given a minty fresh feeling. Especially great for adventurers on the road. Single-use item, usually sold in packs of one hundred. |
| mathboyzld03-21-08, 08:10 PM | I can certainly see #4 inside a clothing store. 7. Book of Finding A small book of one hundred pages, each about 18 by 11 centimeters (7 by 4 inches). Upon placing an item on the book for half an hour, the book records the item's location in the first available page. From then on, any reader who reads that page immediately gains the benefit of a locate object spell on that object. |
| james_gaines03-22-08, 02:43 AM | This one character bought a weird wineglass, figured I'd make it into: 8. The Epitome Wineglass As the name suggests any wine or spirits placed in this glass instantly become much more refreshing and nice-tasting. The composition and effects don't change. 9. Key Ring This small ring 'remembers' keys. When a key is pressed against it and the command word spoken, the ring 'memorizes' the key (the older memory is replaced). When the second word is spoken, an identical copy of that key is produced. |
| Mad_Jack03-22-08, 10:10 AM | 10. Dreamstone - originally a *very* expensive children's toy, a dreamstone is a many-faceted crystal with images of animals and fairies engraved on each face. When held over the flame of a lit candle and released, the dreamstone floats in midair over the flame and slowly rotates, casting shadowy moving images of the engraved figures onto the walls to lull small children to sleep. Some very fashionable noble families have even spent the money to have an effect somewhat like a dancing lights spell programmed into their childrens' dreamstones, such that the dreamstone projects three-dimentional images (albeit obviously fake and magical) floating in the air, rather than simply casting shadows on the wall. On several occasions, devious rogues have used dreamstones as pre-set distractions, using small wire frames to hold dreamstones over candles with particularly long wicks, forming a type of fuse so that the dreamstone doesn't activate until such time as the wick has burned down enough that the flame is directly under it. Others have used specially made dreamstones to project the shadow of a moving person onto walls and window coverings to trick observers into believing that someone is present in a room. |
| Kraik03-22-08, 10:52 AM | 11. Robe of Drying After getting out of a bath or shower, a wizard begins to get a little annoyed having to use that mage hand spell to dry himself every time. This ingenious little invention is a normal bath robe but when put on, it drys and perfumes the skin as well as being cosy, warm and soft to the touch. Many adventurers pack them for those dirty and grungy little inns where the towels haven't been washed since the last orc to frequent that particular inn used it. 12. Unbreakable Wine bottle and glasses Does what it says on the case. These glasses are unbreakable, as is the bottle of wine that the wine is usually poured from. Handy for adventurers that find that the bottle of wine and all their glasses have been destroyed by the shatter spell the cleric cast a few hours back. -Kraik |
| mathboyzld03-23-08, 04:52 PM | :bump: This can't have already died... |
| Loftower03-23-08, 06:04 PM | Heat Rocks Heat Rocks appear to be ordinary grey stones the size of a large potato with orange writing encircling them. The orange writing is an incantation or chant. Each time the chant is spoken, the rocks increase in temperature by 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) up to 500 maximum. When the rock gets above 150 degrees it begins to glow orange, revealing a second chant, written in grey, running crosswise to the orange chant. Each time the grey chant is spoken the rocks decrease in temperature down to 40 degrees minimum. The original 20 stones were created by a wizard for his underground kitchen. Pitcher of Bounty The original Pitcher of Bounty was a wondrous artifact [and therefore a stretch for this thread]. It appears as a brown pitcher carved from a single agate crystal. To the simplest users it could turn any liquid into cool water or brown ale. For the skilled (or the very lucky) it could create more magical beverages. Hearty Stew: A thick, hot, beef-stew. One serving is a full day’s nutrition for one normal human. (1/day) Watchmen’s brew: A hot brown flavorful beverage. Postpones the effects of fatigue for 8 hours, though the drinker suffers a -1 penalty to Dexterity for the duration (and tends to be shaky), it also gives a +1 alertness bonus to avoid surprise. (1/week) Healthy Broth: A hot, thin, chicken-flavored broth capable of Curing Disease and restoring 8+1d4 hp. (1/week) Stodge: I thin, cold white beverage with a starchy taste and chalky texture. Those who drink a full serving of Stodge take on a crystalline form, and are incapable of moving until they succeed at a Fort save (which is allowed every round). Until that time, the subject is effectively a quartz statue (complete with hardness). (1/week) Witches Brew: A vile black liqueur with a vague hint of anise, the witches brew changes the way the imbiber sees the world. Solids become vague and translucent, while thin air becomes more opaque. The more dense the material, the less transparent it is to the imbiber. One might be able to see through a foot of solid stone, but air is dense enough to prevent vision of any kind outside of 30 feet. While the effect is in place, the imbiber may see many hidden things, but the world is so foreign and strange that he or she also takes full penalties for blindness to any action taken. The duration is 4+d6 x10 minutes. (1/week) For any beverage, the pitcher produces 4, 16 oz servings. (One full serving must be consumed for any effect.) Liquids from the pitcher revert to their original form in 1 hour if not consumed. Water and Ale may be consumed at any normal rate, but none of the other effects stack and they may not be reused within the same 24 hrs by the same imbiber. Imitations of the Pitcher of Bounty are commonly passed off to the unsuspecting, or the less ambitious. These pitchers have only the water and ale powers. They are frequently well revered by their owners, unless an unscrupulous salesman convinced them that they were buying the genuine Pitcher. |
| themocaw03-24-08, 01:53 AM | 15. Soaptray of Convenience: Invented by a wizard who got irritated at opening up his adventuring pack and finding that his toiletries had scattered all over the place, the Soaptray of Convenience has three functions. Upon speaking a command word, the tray summons a bar of soap from the Elemental Plane of Surfactants: this soap acts like regular soap for all intents and purposes for the period of one hour, after which the bar (and all the lather it produced) immediately vanishes, leaving the tray clean and fresh, without the messy hassle of having a bar of wet soap in the same bag as your underwear. 16. Potion of Repel Vermin: As per the spell, usually sprayed around a home to keep small insects and other nasties from entering the home. 17. Glasses of Read and Detect Magic: Because what wizard REALLY wants to a: memorize that spell all the time or b: burn the XP to cast Permanency on himself? 18. Bobblin of Threading: Wrap the thread around it, touch the needle to it, speak the command word, and the thread automatically passes through the loop: and if you don't think that's worth a magic trinket, you've got another think coming. |
| Kraik03-24-08, 07:04 AM | 19. Sparklewood A tree thats been too close to a rift in magic for too long usually turns into a sparklewood tree. Sparklewood doesn't do much and it is not particularly rare. When it is burnt, it creates sparks of all different colours and it usually burns for 1 hour. Adventurers use it to distract enemies at night and it puts on a good light show for the kids at special occasions when fired into the air and exploded (this effect doesn't set the piece of wood on fire and so it doesn't burn for the hour, but the piece of sparklewood is destroyed completely) 20. City Guide This normal looking map case isn't what it seems. When coming into a new city, speak the command word that is engraved onto the side and then pull a map from inside the case, which is a map of the city you are in with notable places, shops and districts named. Unfortunately, you have to supply your own parchment which needs to be placed inside before you speak the command word. This is wonderful for those travelers that hate having to wander around a city to find all the best places. Only works for cities but can be used as long as it has parchment inside. |
| Lady_of_the_Winds03-24-08, 10:12 AM | This is a great thread :) 21. Rider's Medallion: This is a silver medallion shaped like a horse's head. While it is worn, the wearer can not be thrown from his mount. It is often used by horse trainers when breaking wild horses, or adventurers who specialize in mounted combat. 22. Pen of Excellence: The user of this pen can write at twice thier normal speed (helpful for wizards copying spells into their spell books). they can draw pictures of anything they see with the precision of a fine artist, and if the user has a sample of another persons handwriting, they can make a perfect forgery of that handwriting. |
| RobbyPants03-24-08, 03:16 PM | 12. 23) An unbreakable glass that always stays cold! |
| The_Ninjaneer03-24-08, 04:02 PM | Potion of Clairodiance: This somewhat brackish brew allows the drinker to smell things over distance up to, but not exceeding a mile. The affected character may only smell the area under the effect of the spell not his/her immedate surroundings. If the user concentrates he/she may move the spells effective radius up to 100 ft per turn. The potion lasts for a half an hour. |
| mathboyzld03-24-08, 04:17 PM | 25) Paladin's Doorbell This doorbell detects as faint magic (magic mouth, detect evil, and detect good). It has three different ringing tones: if the person ringing it is good, it plays harmonious music. If they are evil, it plays clashing chords (think minor seconds). If they are neutral, it sounds like a normal doorbell. (Name comes from the fact that a LG church could put those on their doors so that they knew if a disguised *BEG was trying to trick them. |
| Nathreet03-24-08, 10:31 PM | 26) BBQ apron of the unseen servant. On command, the apron floats in the air, worn by an unseen servant. In addition to the spell's normal effects, he can produce - at will - an unseen heated frying pan, an unseen grill, an unseen oven, an unseen pushbroom, unseen serving trays and most other household implements. Bringing 6 or more of these aprons together causes the servants to break into song and dance while performing their requested tasks. While little is seen directly, singing, stomping, toe-tapping and clanging abounds along with marvelous juggling of visible objects (like food). |
| themocaw04-19-08, 03:17 PM | :emp: NECROMANCY!!!! THIS THREAD LIVES!!! :D 27) Master's Paintbrush Set of Convenience: Inspired by an artist who got annoyed at having to constantly wash, maintain, and replace his paintbrushes that he used to paint little pewter miniatures. . . I mean. . . portraits and landscapes. . . the Master's Paintbrush Set of Convenience is a set of Masterwork paintbrushes that have the following properties. Command Word "Clean" - A minor Prestidigitation spell immediately cleans all paint off of the paintbrush and ferrule. Command Word "Condition" - A second Prestidigitation spell conditions the paintbrush's bristles and reshapes them to the proper shape. Command Word "Drybrush" - Immediately causes the majority of the paint to drop off the bristles, so that the light dusting that remains can be used to create subtle gradations of color. Command Word "Wash" - A "create water" spell of 0.00000001 caster level causes a drop of water to appear on the paintbrush, diluting it to the proper consistency for a wash or glaze. |
