In this thread, people are discussing ways that a beholder can prepare its lair against invasion, using its own unique abilities. I figured, we should start a list.

:behold:

Antimagic eye (AmE) + telekinetic (TK) thrust. Keep many cannonballs handy.
Supernatural flight (SuF) + AmE (to prevent pursuit) + disintegrate to set off an avalanche trap
Disintegrate a chimney with shelves stacked with barrels of acid, boulders and other weapons, fly into the chimney, AmE people to keep them on the ground and TK the acid onto the party
Charm a monster (CM) into giving you a floor that held up only by the power of magic. When adventurers enter, AmE the floor.
CM a monster into giving you an illusory floor.

I would very much like top see some input into this thread seeing that I'm soon to face my EL12 party against one, maybe two beholders.

So far, the beholder has 6 Goblin Rogue10 lackeys who give off a warning system to intruders. The beholder is also creating an elaborate cave design for a mature adult blue dragon. Anyhow, the boholder lives in vertical 10' by 10' shafts that lead up with several smaller horizontal 10 x 10 rooms and one larger vertical room full of collectible victim statues.

One tactic was to have the boholder fly down while the PCs are attempting to climb the vertical 10 x 10 shafts. He will fly by attack and then go through a secret passage using telekenisis to open it.

Next, he will use telekenisis to uncover several hooded everburning torches and then fly up 130'. When PCs start climbing and flying through that section, he will blast them with eye stalks.

At one point, he will be hiding behind a secret door with a small peep whole. If the PCs find the secret door they will be surprise and the beholder will fly by attack during his surprise round and then evade. If the PCs don't find the secret door then the beholder will open it and hope to gain surprise and again fly by attack and then evade.

If by chance they defeat the beholder too quickly, I'll place another to surprise them at some point.

Of course, I'm giving the PCs the knowledge that they will be facing a beholder or two. I'm hoping they can properly prepare by doing proper research through the local library to research the powers they will be up against.

Don't forget that there will also be 6 Goblin Rogue10, who may survive and elude to players. These goblins will pursue the PCs up the vertical tunnels and use various tactics to pull PCs down, or poison them with bolts.
