I happen to be short on plots and I realised no thread for them exist, so I am officically starting the 1001 long-term campaign plots search. Unfortunately I am unable to post number 1.

i had a post a while ago offering help with such things, but has long been buried or deleted. still, i'd be open to contribute.

here's a couple:

1. the classic campaign against a BBEG, fighting his minions, one-by-one taking down his/her subordinate officers. (BGII: ToB)

[addition follows:]

2. send the PCs on a quest that has them eventually come across a major artifact that will help them defeat the BBEG and/or his minions. (a small-scale version is used in BGII: SoA-fighting the Cult of the Eyeless in the temple district.)

3. the characters take a side in a guild war

4. the PCs empark on an expedition to some undiscovered island or continent or something.

here's a link to an example of #4

http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=135711

--------------------------------------------

5. the party is asked to help with a problem around a town-this problem could be highwaymen, raiding orcs, changing weather, etc. and the party has to find the culprit. they investigate one lead after another, finding several innocent groups before finding out that the raids/changes/brigands are a component in a larger scheme (Icewind Dale)

if i come up with others, i'll post them here. also, i cna give more depth to these and possibly others upon request-simply e-mail or otherwise contact me.

#6: When all else fails, shamelessly steal from Tolkein.

"So...we have to take this rung to Mt. Boom...which is in the middle of Morgor, the dark land of Lord Saulon?"
"Yes, and you will be aided by Dan Galf the wizard."

#7. If the players are getting to close to the Big Bad Evil Guy (or Girl), get them to find clues leading them to believe he has travelled to another plane. Let them find a way, to the plane the BBEG is supposed to be, don't make it to easy. Once they arrive, they will most likely find out that no-one has ever heard of the BBEG, and that the return will be nowhere near easy as the arrivial. Meanwhile, free at last to pursue his (or her) evil plots and such, the BBEG sends a gang of doppelgangers in the form of the players out to do evil in his (or her) name.

Once the players do get home, they'll find a very different world from that they remember, everyone will hate them. This will make stopping the BBEG so much harder, since they can no longer expect any help from anyone.

How's that?

#8. Have one of the gods seduce one of the PCs. Nine months later, the PC finds himself/herself the father/mother to a demigod. Not only will the PCs have to find a safe place for the new demigod, but protect it from the mechanications of other gods/goddesses that are not friendly towards the kid's other parent.

#9. The End of the World is coming and the PCs must prevent it.

#10. Someone discovered a magic spell to go back in time and is messing with the timeline. PCs are either in the past and become aware of the interloper(s) or PCs are the interlopers trying to prevent an apoclyptic future.

#11. There is a strange plague that no one seems able to cure and the PCs must go out and find the cure before its too late. (Make sure that once PCs find a way to cure it involves lots of rare materials that will have to be obtained from remote and/or dangerous locations and maybe even other planes).

#12. A lich has found a way to become a god and the PCs have to stop the lich.

Here's the plots I used in my last few campaigns, from last to first. Note that the first one listed was an Epic campaign.

13. A portal to a mythical 'first world' has been discovered. This seemingly normal land is the source of all creation in the multiverse and is the birthplace of all gods. Eleven people have come to this land before the PCs and gained this awesome and terrible power. Calling themselves The Apostles, they are for some reason trapped and unable to leave the first world. But they make plans to kill anyone who enters in order to prevent them from gaining the power (the natives cannot get the power, for mysterious reasons). The PCs come into conflict with the apostles and have to decide; do they gain the power for themselves or try and destroy it to prevent its further misuse?

The next 7 ideas were all used in the same campaign, simultaneously:

14. A PC's soul belongs to a demon. One of his parents promised it to the demon in return for favors or safety; now the demon's minions have come to collect.

15. A PC is a member of a particular race/clan/religion/bloodline which is in fact the true ruler of the kingdom/country/empire, that has been usurped long ago. They need to learn of their true heritage, prove it to the people at large, and deal with the original group who deposed them as well as the supporters of the current government (not neccesarily the same people).

16. A PC leaves home to start his career, and when he later returns home he finds his family missing and no one remembers him. Is it a secret government/church plot, or does he really even exist at all?

17. A PC bears a strange resemblance to someone important, and none of his family recognize him. Later the player is discovered to be a doppelganger who lost his mind when trying to impersonate the 'real' PC (who is actually dead).

18. A PC is the sole surviving descendant of a once prominent and evil thieve's guild, and now the enemies of that guild have learned his identity and are trying to get their revenge.

19. A PC is secretly being tested to see if he is worthy of inheriting the power over coincidence itself.

20. People all over the land are going missing, coinciding with a religion's claims that a mesiah is about to appear (actually an evil being of some sort who infiltrated the religion as is using its creeds and prophecies for his own ends.)

Ah that was a great camapign...

21. The PCs are convicts who have been given a choice; serve 20 years in prison or 5 in a frontier colony. When they get to the frontier they must tame the wild north/east/south/west, try to redeem themselves or simply escape their bonds. And who knows what is waiting to be discovered in this untamed land?

22. An ancient race has long since died out; however one member discovered a way to manipulate time just a bit too late and was only able to save himself. He needs the PCs to help him attain more power so he can save his whole people; and assuming he succeeds the sudden appearance of a once dead civilization could have grave consequences on the world.

23. A long forgotten god is about to be revived by a secret cult. The 'seed' of this god is present in two siblings, and there are specific rituals or circumstances needed for the god to be reborn. One of the siblings should be a PC. Other things to consider are having a vague prophecy describing this and/or several pairs of siblings to throw people off.

24. A merchant has been killed in his shop, the owner's buisness partener(angry at the ineptitude of the local law eforcement) decides to hire the Pc to investigate the murder. Once they come back with their first clues the man who hired them is found dead in the pc's room.

25. Alexandre Trimiere (npc) is the decendant of a cursed familly, over 500 years ago his great-great-great-great-great-Uncle became a vampire and has prayed on his familly for generations. Once every 100 years, the vampire drains a familly member in a ritual fashion. Alexandre Trimiere hires the pc's to find his vampiric relative and kill him the pc have 10 years to find him before the next ritual is too begin.

26.(and the classic) As a child one of the pc's was given a ring (standard ring no speacial value alone), The ring is the only thing he has that belonged to his father. Later the pc's discovers that his father is the head of a group of evil cultist who are attempting to revive a ancient demi-god to power. The ring is one of the missing ellements to reving the demi-god.

27. someone made a shadow/simulacrum copy of the party members, only the copies are more powerful than the originals, so the party needs to find some clever way to deal with the copies without meeting them in open combat. all this time, the copies are running amok and generally destroying the party's reputation, so the townspeople in the area are also out to get them.

28. it turns out that one of the PCs or a half-sibling or close friend or other form of relative is demigod sleeper-meaning that his powers have remained hidden. soon after word of this discovery gets out, a cult devoted to the evil god that is the demigod's mother/father comes after the character and captures him/her, and the party has to rescue them before the cult sacrifices the demigod in the belief that doing so will give power to the diety, and also the god/godess's favor to the cultists.

29. the party is stranded on some distant material plane and have to find a way back to their home plane.

30. the party belongs to a local guild that has recently found evidence of a rival organization and the party has to investigate it, and later wipe it out.

31. The PCs search a recently unearthed desert tomb only to find a series of passages leading to a vast underground necropolis where the dead still toil and ghosts await the time to return to their corpses to conquer the living. Perhaps a lich or mummy lord is seeking to fulfill a ritual to clear away the sands that bury the city...

Helping the local constabulary defend a city from an invading force.

I'm quietly working up to this in my campaign. I expect them to be ready for this by the end of 2004. I'm still developing the game mechanic for large-scale (army) combat, but I envision a big, epic battle on the Helm's Deep scale of the Two Towers (LOTR). I can already picture their expressions when they realize that instead of piddling little rounds of combat against mercs or monsters, they are going to participate in a battle involving thousands of troops over days (possibly weeks). :)

33 People wear dull colored clothes. Only true masters of their craft are allowed to wear full color, the rest can't abide wearing them (they go sick to death if they do). Nobody is able to wear full black or full white. Ages ago, men and gods went to war with bright pennants and tabards, generating full colored battle fields turning to blood. The gods of war, magic, dragons and music (musicians played through battles) were killed in the process. Remaining gods thus forbid the use of full colors to those undeserving. Now the youg bard all the PCs grew with gets to a city to get his colors (everyone gets two, which can be the same, and can only wear those colors without getting sick), but never came back and nobody talks about him or answers any questions...
That was a great campain... Feel free to ask more about it if you want...

34 The PCs enquire and explore ruins of an long lost draconic civilisation... But the drakis, inheritors of this civisation are abroard... and they don't stand interlopers...

35 The PCs are manipulated to kill the Prince of the Kingdom... They are exiled and can only come home if they found the brother of said prince who went adventuring on a far continent held by a mighty ennemy empire...

(in fact #34 and 35 occured in the same campain, still ongoing...)

36. A secret cult nears the end of a ritual to summon their goddess Tiamat to the material plane to destroy all that she sees. Unfortunately for the PCs, dragons head the cult. The PCs must dispatch the humanoid lesser leaders before moving on to defeat the dragon leaders, with help from followers on Bahamut.

37. A BBEG approaches your kingdom. THey dont know it yet, but he will test all their military might. At first, the appraoch is unknown, but clues during other mini adventures slowly reveal the plans of the BBEG.

For long term campaign ideas

38. I like wars. In ancient times seiges upon castles lead to months of stalemate outside the castle wars, as well as thousands of deaths on the battlefeild. A great campaign is to have the PC's as mercaniarys on either side of this big war

39. I also like time travel. An idea of mine is that the PC's find a way to travel 1 year into the future, then 10 years, then 100 years, then 1,000 years, then 10,000 years, each like a different plot point or peice of a puzzle.

40. I also like epic campaigns, very epic. an Idea of mine was that a "God killer" come down and is starting to kill the planets pantheon (Orcus, Hecatoncheires, Dradeon).
My favorite is Orcus with his last word because he has demonic allys. (Get or read Requim for a God) When a god dies, he leaves powerful stuff around, the PC's need to get to it before the demonds do. And after the PC cause enough trouble, the demonds who have already taken powers for other planets pantheons will take on the PCs. Eventually, they will take on Orcus.

41. I also like the demiplane of Nemesis. Just random portals open up on the planet and hords attack. They could be Humanoids, they could be Dragons, they could me Insectoids, they could be Psudonatural (from the Far Realm)

To make a long story short. My PC's dont like me very much  :D ;)

42. a mhorg or lich or other powerful undead warlord has set up a base deep under a city and is raising an army of undead from the city's graveyards.

43. The BBEG has placed his/her lifeforce in an object (usually a box or gem) and so cannot be destroyed while the object is intact. works best with liches, but can be used with other creatures.

44.the PCs wake up on slabs in a mortuary with no memory and a load of tattoos that have clues printed in them, and they have to figure out who they are, why they were in the mortuary, why they're not dead, and so on. you could give them some special abilities like regeneration, immortality and such. (taken from Planescape:Torment)

45. the party is caught in the middle of a war between the Cult of the Dragon and a beholder cult. both beholders and dracoliches make excellent archfiends. if the party is evil, they will join with one of cults, or if they're good, they'll form their own faction or join goodly one and try to convince their higher-ups to take part in the war.

46. There was once a powerful sorceress that could see the future and before she died she created a blue stone. The timestone, as it later became know gave prophetic dreams to whoever held it. It was in the care of sorceress's companions, but as their family lines disappeared, so did the timestone. A powerful but evil demigod now searches for the timestone so that he can manipulate the future to his own ends.

(It is also fun to make the PCs reincarinations of the sorceress's companions and have them find some the items the companions carried that eventually become intelligent and "remember" more of their old power.)

(Even more fun to make the reincarniation of the sorceress an 8 year old boy with the powers of a first level sorceror and foresight.)

47 It was a campain with no magic-users. Each PC found somehow a runic stone. There was only 24 of those stones, each with a different shape and power. One was the rune of water which garanteed that her owner could'n suffer from thirst, and could breath underwater and so on. Each owner dreamt frequently (at fool moons I believe) of the other owners, or, if that was the case, of the location were stood an unfound one, and of course, when a PC spotted one of the dreamt one, they made contact and decided to seek the others... Once all the stones have been recoverd, they found that put together they formed a star on which was printed a map, the map showed the location of the avatar of a powerfull goddess (in fact the Creator of the world) who was asleep. Putting the star on her brought her alive, thus saving the world! Ha!. However, the PCs didn't know they were saving the world till the end, and of course, evil deities didn't facilitate their work!

48. A past ocurrence - a punishment from an archgod or an agreement or powerful magic made all the greatest immortals of the world unable to pursue their goals and fight each other. The land has since lived without any major wars, but the immortals want to fulfil their past desires - control the whole region. PC-s arrive to that world through a long-forgotten portal just like in an ancient prophecy and are thus the only suitable people to free the leading immortals' minions, who have slept for thousands of years.

The evil immortals learn of it and start to help the PCs so that they could find and free the immortals' minions. PCs are unaware of the truth and perform the services that only the can perform (because of the prophecy) so slowly unleashing the truly evil forces. When the time is right a major war breaks out. The evil immo-s quickly grab hold of all the land and wreac havoc among regular people.
Learning what they have done, PCs must find and release the sleeping minions of the good-aligned immortals before it is too late....

49. A Vampire Lord (http://wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/mm/mm20021018a) secretly arrives in an area and starts to spread his/her influence. At first the PCs hear only rumors and are lead to wrong traces. during research they however learn that undead are behind all the recent mess... and then they must get to the vampire lord...

50. PCs join a grouping, that is recruiting itsself new loyal members to finally overthrow the goverment and stast to rule the land on its own..

51. PC-s should have (at least most of them)the same deity. The deity would clearly state that he/she wants PCs to convert half of the population to believe in that deity... or else...

3. the characters take a side in a guild war

52. I'm working on a campaign world where big chunks of land have been magically lifted off the surface of the earth, which has been abandoned. People live in giant cities that are magically sustained, there are continents that somehow lifted without the aid of human magic, those are left to explore. Piracy runs rampant away from major cities, travellers are rarely safe travelling to outer continents, and more unexplored territory. Planning to have some kind of old magical culture be the reason for the more mysterious continents, and hopefully come to a conclusion as to what happened to the world by the end of the campaign. Lots of dungeon crawling, monster-run continents, teleports to underground dungeons under the earth's surface, etc... Also surreal celestial planes, i.e. continents far far out in the atmosphere, sustained by magic, remnants of the lost culture. I am hoping to incorporate pirates at some point in the early campaign, with ships operated by crystals which suspend the ships, and huge magnets to somehow focus the direction of movement (as well as sails, and maybe propellors of some sort, not sure how).

53. An ice age has come across the region, castles are barricaded with ice and snow, great beasts have carved huge caverns in the ice and snow. Maybe nordic setting? Do the PCs have to get food, do they need to go rescue folk in a village, do they need to find someone kidnapped by some ice fiend, do they need to escort a wagon train through the dangerous woods.

54.Something with levelling weapons, devised special attacks etc. Come up with a randomized hit chart to make combat more accurate(i.e. 1-5 hits head, 6-20 hits chest, 20-30 hits left arm, 30-40 hits right arm... so on and so on...), come up with rules for aiming for targets, more damage etc... Same goes for spells.

55. Some form of magic in which people could endow traits to their lords or protectors, such as might, stamina, speed, hearing, speaking, glamor, speed, wit. Along the lines of books by David Farland (read Runelords, excellent series). This would result in super-powered characters, explore desert/muslim/indian civilization. Also deal with european-esque regions, maybe wars? assassins? political unrest?

57. The PCs are hired on the utmost secrecy by the king or a very powerful merchants' guild to travel undercover. It seems that pirates are attacking the merchant fleet of a rich country that relies heavily on trade. On the surface, it simply appears to be piracy. The players slowly start, however, to realize that it is the vizier of the king (of said country) that is hiring them in a plot to ruin the country and take over. His plan is nearly ready, as the king will be sailing soon for a summer excursion to an island. The vizier will then spring his trap and take over.

58. An Empire, one that is usually noble and righteous launches a sneak attack on its neighboring nations, conquering the entire continent. The PCs are part of a resistance movement. They go on various covert missions for the resistance, eventually discovering that the Empress of the offending nation is in fact possessed by a great evil, the soul of a fallen god, who hopes to conquer the material realm in order to make it a staging point for an invasion of whatever plane the gods who originally banished him live on. The characters have to discover how to kill the god without killing the Empress, as killing the mortal host will only cause the god to find a new body to possess.

This idea obviously draws inspiration from Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and The Lair of Bones, Book 4 of The Runelords by David Farland.

59. It's never as easy as you thought... Have the PCs get involved in an adventure that at first glance by the players looks to be pretty normal... but ends up being really easy instead... but there is substancial treasure involved. Once they go carting off with the treasure to get the magical gegaws identified, have them discovere that the biggest object is, in fact, some artifact that's been lost of hundreds, if not thousands, of years. The item should be too powerful for them to use safely (something really evil and nasty). Then have a powerful mage or guild offer to purchase the item with extremely generous offer... Perhaps even enough that the players can get some nice goodies they've been wanting a while for their PCs. So they ultra-powerful mage runs off with the item... the PCs get their gear... And the other shoe drops. An entire army is sent out from the location the PCs just arrived from to get thte artifact back. It seems the artifact is still considered the property of some really nasty guy that has decided to wage war on all the surrounding kingdoms until his property is returned. Well, "oops." Now the PCs have to figure out what to do about the whole situation as they've essentially started a war... And eventually everyone will be looking for them.

In the campaign we were in, the artifact was a throne that could turn anyone that sat in it into an undead creature of like power. The mage that bought the artifact was from a good-aligned kindom who wanted to keep anyone from studying it (paid 100,000gp up front and agreed to pay 10,000gp per year for a 10 year "lease" on the throne). The throne was stolen from this half-buried temple in the middle of a big desert... and the invading army was composed of all the desert clans that united together because they feared their "god of destruction" a heck of a lot more than the civilized countries. To make matters worse, shortly after that mess started we ended up with another powerful artifact which we decided we'd have to get to the same mage (maybe trade it for the first...) But we had several armies and a kingdom at war to get through first...

Good times!

:D

rogue quests!

60. there are several powerful organizations in the area. they're things like wizards guilds, trading and merchant guilds, etc. All of these but the local thieves guild claim ownership of some priceless artifacts. so they hire thieves to claim the items from each other, or failing that, independent rogues. The part consists mainly of freelance pilferers, and are hired to raid various places of the aformentioned artifacts.

61. the party wakes up in a dungeon cell. their only means of escaping are 3 NPCs, one in one of the other cells, the other 2 in another one. they can communicate via a sentient item belonging to one of the NPCs, which is locked away in an armory used for storing confescated equiptment. together, they have to find a way to escape and/or recover an item from the castle that the dungeon lies within. this could tie in with #60, as well.

i have a story i wrote on which i based #61, which goes in to much more depth if anyone is interested.

62. Either a PC or NPC rogue has stolen an artifact, and its previous owner and his/her minions want it back. the thief in question and the party have to keep them from retrieving it.

61. Class War/revolution. the pcs are slaves/workers in a totalitarian/racist society and its time for a revolution! this can provide lots of opportunities for hit and run battles, information gathering, stealth missions, assassinations, bank jobs/armory heists, disguise/infiltration scenarios, recruiting/training an army, quests for special items, and so on. the whole thing culminates in open revolutionary war; leaving the door open for another (RP heavy) campaign detailing the formation and structure of the new society.

look for inspiration at early american or french republic history, it can be incredibly difficult to get a constitution ratified and set up a stable system of government. a nice twist is the animal farm scenario where the passionate enemies of tyranny become tyrants themselves and the average people end up having fought, bled, and died for the privilege of changing masters.

warning: i think i would find this last bit really annoying as a player. but i do believe it accurately reflects the aftermath of many (if not most) revolutions and i always lean toward making the game world more three-dimensional, realistic (within the limits of its basic assumtions), complex and immersive. i know that for myself and some of my players this really helps with that wonderful, magical, and unfortunately elusive suspension of disbelief which when its firing on all cylinders can really make RL disappear for a few fun hours.:)

64. the BBEG is giving each of his minions rings of invisibility, so the party msut find a way to counteract this to give the defenders of the city they're in a fighting chance at pushing the invisible army back.

65. the PCs are hired to help an NPC townsperson. the person has been recieving mysterious notes that hint at raids and other unpleasant activities directed at places in the area, each of them growing steadily closer to this person's home. it turns out that the person was the only member of a tyrannical royal family from a far-away land to survive a bloody coup 10 to 20 years before, when the NPC in question was only a child, and now the overthrowing body is coming after them, to finish what they started and eradicate the bloodline once and for all. so the party has to trace the notes and defend the NPC, who was 5 or less at the time and has none of the evil traits of his/her forbears and is therefore innocent.

66. the classic: a dragon is terrorizing the area, eating livestock, burning villages, etc, and the party has to thwart, and eventually slay it.

12-31-03, 06:02 PM
67) A pseudonatural dragon called Ak'najix is searching for a mysterious artifact called the sceptre dracthulhu. It is said that this ancient, powerful object can banish dragons to the Far Realms; which in turn would rapidly drive them mad and eventually warp their forms. The players can only destroy the sceptre by gathering the blood of 3 morally opposed dragons, in otherwords a LG, a N and a CE one (or a LE, N and CG one). You needn't kill them, as all thats required is a single drop. You may even be able to convince the dragons to donate some blood.

68) PCs wander into a dungeon and find a Black Scroll. They take teh scroll to the local spells master guy. He discovers it is a highly dangerous spell of seperation, and he demands to see where they found it. The PC's end up taking him there, and he discovers a hidden room with a dimensional gate. On the other side of the gate is an alternate universe where the creatures are much more powerful, but each PC gets assigned a template by the DM ¬_¬. After battling around a bit, they hear about a white scroll. They wander round and are confronted by a master bard/rogue/cleric who is also looking for it. He warns them to stay away. Later on, they find a dungeon where the bard/rogue/cleric was recently seen. They battle through it and find him examining the white scroll. He explains that it is a spell of dimensional glue which can merge two material planes together. The party either decide to let him go on and cast it, or try and fight it from him (and get overpowered. hee hee). The two worlds merge together they lose about half of their templated powers. All kinds of hell break loose as this bard/rogue/cleric teams up with whatever baddie in the home world. There is a struggle to get to the black scroll which the spells master is keeping in the city. The enemy wants to keep it for himself, and the PC's want to use it, as it seperates the two planes. Either the PC's get it and return the wrold to normal, or they lose it and have to adventure in the new freaky world.

69. The BBEG is a necromancer, and the particular spell he's working on requires samples from a certain number of each spieces. the samples could be blood, flesh, their souls, etc. when he captures them, he sorts them by race-each race getting its own demiplane. the party can't overpower the necromancer, and even if the could, then the "specimens" would be trapped in the demiplanes forever, as only the necromancer can access them.so the party needs to make a deal with him. they have to convince him to let them collect samples for him, as they would do it by only collecting one or two samples from each race. he agrees and stops his activities for an agreed amount of time, and the party begins a romp through the area, even to other planes, to get the samples. later on they might have to find a way to keep him from casting his spell, but their first concern at the time is to get the "specimens" safely out of the little demiplanes.

70 The pcs find a badly beaten old man, after healing him they find he is one of the last four members of an ancient mages guild. These four powerful spellcasters were charged with the safe keeping of four peices of a powerful lichs' pylaterie (sp?) The lich's followers are trying to rais him and they already have two of the peices. the party must find the remaining two members of this guild and then find a way to destroy their peices of the pylaterie (?)

71 The pc's inadvertently start a series of events that will cause the apocolips. As the ones that began these events they are told they are the only ones who will be able to stop them.

I think the right spelling should be phylactery or phylacter...

PCs discover an ancient tome with a prophecy written in it. At first they cannot read all of it, because some of the text has erased somehow. They can read maybe some things that describe their actions.. and the prophecy itsself states that if certain things come to be true gods themselves will start fighting each other.... as the group adventures they recognize new deeds they have done in the book of prophecy...

Maybe they can also read of some future events, so that they will read what they will do. even if they try to avoid doing it, they cannot eventually prevent the destined future to come..

so the gods will battle. a long and fierce battle. most gods will be slain.. a few survives. some pcs maybe have to earn their goodwill... new world will suffer greatly. life will be harder, empires would fall, new rise....

PCs maybe will have an opportunity to gather some survivors themselves under their rule.. and must then protect the new country from troubles...

76) (Got some ideas from one of those before:D)
Players find a small powerful artifact, that can take them to an almost identical world exept.. almost everything is opposite.. so if they are a LG group and change world they are in (this happens momentaryly if they turn a switch of the artifact) they'll be CE and their deities as well. so if a quest is too difficult to be handled peacefully, they turn evil and kill the 'problem'... however in first world the opposite of the problem will bee also dead :( only the blame wouldn't be on the group..
Or an easier solution to that is, when they change worlds, their best friends will be the worst enemies and the other way round... and PCs would be stuck.. at least for some time.. and when they finally return some bad things would have happened again :D...
also the artifact could be a curse (even better), so they couldn't voluntarily change worlds

A cabal of great wizards 'summon' the PCs. But in their 1st level incarnations. The summoners are obviously displeased because they need the 'Heroes of Legend' (i.e. Epic Level versions of the characters), to save themselves from an impending threat. The Characters have legends, myths, and chronicles dated over a thousand years ago based off of things they have no memory of doing.

A green slaadi found a way onto the Prime Material plane, and is researching ways to open a permanent portal to his home plane. He hires the PCs as a mean but fair older elven sage, sending them on various minor quests for ancient magics that no one even remembers. Eventually, after about 2-3 years or so, the green slaadi disappears for a year, turning into a gray slaadi, returns to kill the PCs for knowing too much about its plans. The PCs, of course unless poorly played by the DM, should know just enough that the "sage" is researching protals of some kind.
They should also be worried about the disappearance of the sage, and possibly to a minor campaign arc or two searching for him (of course, he isnt even on this plane, which might be a nice twist to send the PCs on).
The PCs finally kill the BBEG Slaadi, BUT  the portal was completed, and only by going INTO the portal will they stop the slaadi from flooding through (anyone see little Nikki and the gates of hell???)
