I've been planing a campaign for a while now but still need to figure out the BBEG(s). I want mine to have a connection to my players so he will be more of a we want to kill, capture, etc... him then because we have to.

So what are some of the big bad evil guy's you've had in campaigns that your fond of for good or bad?

1.) Mr. Osamaki, a rouge leader who was eventualy discovered to be the reincarnated form of a ancient warrior who conquered the world long ago.
Only BBEG I know to effectivley bribe the party to look the other way while he burned a village down to the ground. Everyone had an alignment change after that session.

My DM had an elf Druid that would do some pretty despicable things *shiver*. This BBEG pushed enough of the party's buttons that a majority of the members (4 of 6) planned to assault the Druid in his grove. Needless to say - two died (the two who were against the idea but went to try and save their foolish party members) and 4 got out barely alive with the Druid taunting them the entire time.

To this day this is the best villain I have ever encountered in a game. He may have killed me, but he messed with every character in different ways and we really HATED the guy.

For the record - He's still alive out there.

3) That figgin' Githyanki ***** Queen. :headexplo
She party wiped the whole group, and not in a cool way. Just as I teleported in front of her, she got lucky and rolled a nat 20 with her vorpal sword. She also made the save against all our undead slaying arrows, and then summoned a red dragon that killed our leader and his shadow dragon cohort (the dragon was nearly swallowed). Our own Psionic lich got vaporized by her own spells being reflected back at her. The only reason we won at all was because of a Ken beast cohort (a "Ken beast" is anything with more than three templates) that riped her to bits.

2) The high level wizard Cord Ousten

Players found his wizard tower on an island they belived was deserted and it was under attack by all sorts of odd creatures (that most would assume to be the bad guys, like hobgoblins) they helped fend off the attack (little did they know the wizard was more than capable of taking on an attack 100x larger). The wizard thanked them and then presented them with a quest with a mighty reward to recive a sword from a large fortress (that he said was once his, but he lies. The castle had a ward against evil people so Cord couldnt enter) that the enemies now occupy. The players completed the task without question (big mistake on their part). The fortress was always controlled by the misfit army of hobgoblins and low level creatures to keep a sword safe that had the power to summon an extreamly powerful deamon. Then they handed it over to the BBEG and the world was doomed, thanks PCs!

In my last campaign (that ended horribly) one of the BBEGs was the high priest of Pelor (really Erythnuul) and the king's advisor. He wore a crown with three long points, and the dwarf ended up calling him Mr. Triceratops... where the dwarf met a triceratops I don't know.

Most players really hate a traitor. Have an NPC follow the party around for a while and then betray them. Gets them every time. Also having them escape from the party several times helps.

6-
In a 2E campaign, our DM had a ranger accompany us for a while. He backstabbed the party in a fight that almost got us killed. He later left the crucified body of a party member (the player switched characters) where we would find it.

We fought several battles with him where he either beat us or he escaped from us before we finally killed him. We really hated Selegorn (yes, I realize the name is LoTR rip off).

7- The mummy lord mystic theurge
It was the BBEG of a neverending champaign. its strong camuflage spells and objects bring it to be a very dangerous enemy. It guided thiefs guilds in disguies, managed to be in the king council for a while... it was great when we discovered its true identity

This topic came up with my group not long ago, and I was surpised on who they told me was their favorite villain of all time. It was a really difficult choice between two major foes apparently and a relavitely minor one.

8. First up we had Luce, a heavily optimised Gish character that was, due to story concepts at the time, a near physical manifestation of the sin of Pride [she worked alongside six other villains, each modelled after a different form of sin]. Sadly, whilst she has never been forgotten, she has never been well liked, and never been very well developed as games where she is in have had a habit of players turning upon each other.

9. Kain comes second, a Drow Vampire/Vampire Lord that my players twitch at whenever they hear about him. The ultimate 'cool guy' according to my friends he is relatively new and very well known, both for his wondrous combat statistics [the party has challenged him with various monsters, and has watched him take down wyrm dragons by himself], his sadistic nature and his calm planning, my friends tell me this is one of their all time favorite villains. I think he will become THE all time favorite villain for my group once the party finishes looking into his past and his actions, the campaign is still under way.

10. The all time favorite villain for my group to date is a relatively minor foe called 'Ziki', a changelling rogue from a Dungeon adventure that I threw into the middle of a campaign to add some zest and variety from the main plots. I roleplayed her simply, threw off a few one liners, and made myself a little bit of a pain in the butt, and in the end the party managed to track her down and confront her in one on one combat. After a very short encounter [the fighter and cleric alone took her down in a single round ^_^;;] the fighter looked at her, around her room, thought about her actions and then dragged the rest of the party out of the room with complete knowege that Ziki would escape. Apparently she sticks in the minds of my players as the only non-villain villain, a chaotic neutral mother wrapped in her own anger and grief out for revenge. I'm very tempted to have her return in a future campaign with a newer group, likely as an ally or rival.

Y'know what REALLY gets them every time? you have an npc who acts shifty, to get them to think he is evil eventually he goes after one of the party members and gets himself ganked. Turns out that the PC party member he went after is 'in on it' with the plot and is really a high level black guard... :ayyyy!:
