I love hearing about other NPC personalities.. I dunno why. But I do. If you would, list here your favorite NPC personality, and how it effects your campaign/session. Let me get this started.

Back in the mid 90's, I was playing a small campaign. In this campaign there was a gnome, that wore a reddish-tint glasses that went well with attire. I remember this little pest because he could fight as good as he could throw a pun in a conversation. He had a scottish/Irish accent ( thanks to the DM's heritage), and the little bugger walked with a limp, there was no broken bones, he just walked with a limp. Kind of a P-I-M-P of the Gnome world.

Hah! I love my NPC's and so do my players. I don't beleive in generic characters. But some noteworthy ones....

Lily Coldbright - A rightous paliden that is assisgned to my players. A lust for adventure is her downfall. Well.. not her only downfall. She can't stand evil and evil creatures (huh... wonder why) but she has a particular bone against the undead (pun intended). Only problem is is that she is deathly afraid of them. Truly, she freezes up when she sees one if she fails to save. She'll run for cover or sit down and guard herself with her holy shield...
Very headstrong (like any other paliden, no?). My players figured this out when they found a particular (and obvious) trap/puzzle. The room had three gargoyle statues and when someone passed infront of one a burst of energy would be released. So, Lily seeing that the energy had been released decided to run through the middle because she passed a wisdom check... fried paliden anyone? (she lived, but very wounded)

A favorite of the players is a particular cook in a local tavern. He speaks in a very uneducated accent. Plus, he has lost many of his teeth. His specialty is Mush. Mush is very addicting and the players find themselves randomly craving Mush.

Kobold Monk/Sorceror. He believes he's descended from a Red Dragon because of his sorcerous powers, and is about as vain as one. He carries around 20 potions of enlarge person so he can push other Kobolds around. He oils/dyes his scales to enhance their reddish tinge, and eventually will become a Dragon Disciple.

My favorite NPC's are the ones I start to be PC's but like them too much to risk losing them in one of my sadistic friends' games.

Leon Tyrell
----------
Leon Tyrell (Male Human FTR5/KEN5) is the leader of a mercenary group called the Specters. Most of the mercs are disillusioned soldiers from the Orc War (a war about 15 years ago, during which the majority of the Orc race found themselves dead). Leon himself was a war hero (by a stroke of luck, killed the Orc King, who was dual-wielding mauls. A cool battle, I actually rolled it out. 'Twas sweet), but was not acknowledged by his king, and was refused his comission. Desperate for money, he started taking odd jobs. He met with Ashurbanipal (Ash, for short) and Tobias, and with their help started the Specters.

He is extraordinarily xenophobic because of the war. He wears the stained white mail he took from the Orc King's body.

Ashurbanipal Hawkwood
----------------------
Ash (Human Male HEX8) is a character I actually played for a while, but retired as an NPC. My friend started a "noble" campaign, and used the families from Fading Suns. Anyway, I was not only the third son (meaning I get jack from my father) but I'm also an albino. Ironic, eh? Ash...albino...ah, forget it. Anyway, he served in the war because he stood to inherit nothing. He made a name for himself, but was not recognized. He met Leon, and together, they started the Specters.

Anyways, as Leon's captain, he commands the main body of mercenaries. He carries a keened falchion, and wears black chain mail.

Tobias
------
Tobias (Human Male ROG8) is actually not my character. My friend Matt made him for one of my campaigns, but retired him. I adopted him, but I can't write a backstory for someone else's character. It's a quirk I have.

Anyway, he commands the elite squad (seven Male Human ROG2/ASN5 [yes, I know that's not possible, but I fudged it on purpose]). They are Leon's assassins, and are not used in normal missions.

Horivald-

Sorceror who pretends to be a druid in order to lead the party away from certain death without letting them know what's going on. He has absolutely NO sense of direction and gets completely lost at the first opportunity. He casts only sor/wiz/druid spells which allays some suspicion, but he isn't particularly cautious and thus manages to get himself killed fairly quickly.

Donavin (1)-

Donavin is a former paladin posessed by a demon. His paladin side is in constant mortal combat with his demonic side. The only way that the paladin can strike out at the demon (who has most of the control over Donavin's body) is through masochism. Donavin mutilates himself at every opportunity, wears no armor and carries no weapons. He fights with two wickedly clawed 20 lb iron gauntlets. Every 1d10 rounds, he rolls a will save, and if he succeeds it he can act as a paladin until the next will save. If he fails the save he either becomes evil and acts as a blackguard or goes completely berserk and attempts to do disgusting things like burrow into people's eyes.

Donavin (2)-

Completely different guy from a different campaign. Ran 6/Assassin 4. Started out as a serial killer who ruthlessly tortured mages before finally finishing them off. He would use a peculiar enchanted dagger to draw a bullseye on their forehead while they slept before evetually killing them. The enchanted dagger fills the blood of the spellcasters with antimagical venom, making them require a concentration check any time they try to cast spells. Now he works for the upper eschelon of a mage organization who uses him to "maintain balance" by taking out powerful mages. He enjoys toying with his victims, but is easily enraged when they don't show fear. He serves his masters faithfully in the hope that they will release him.

Ufgar Blackgrin; Mid level Rogue, dagger fighter and general thug.

A former prisoner kept in one of the roughest, most neglected prisons in the game world. He learned his "trade" of thievery and thuggery there, though he's not particularly good at the theivery part - In prison, might makes right.

He's now in his late middle ages, and quite adept at fighting dirty with all sorts of hidden little weapons on and around his body.

He's a homeless man, constantly stinking of human waste or garbage - he's certainly not clean or sophisticated. However, he is also heavily addicted to a drug (I took one from the BoVD, but any suitably nasty drug will suffice). The "Blackgrin" part of his personality comes his smile - a hideous maw of missing and rotten teeth.

He has absolutely no control over himself - he's a slave to his addictions, and as such he's prone to hold-ups and other "low class" crimes. He's obviously not tolerated by the local thieves' guild, since petty low end muggings only make the citizenry and contabulary more precautious, which is bad for business. Therefore, Ufgar is continuously in danger of discovery from the Thieves' Guild (who supplies him his drugs at a price of course) and the local authorities.

Ufgar knows that he is dying. He will not live another year or two, his health is failing, his addicition is crippling him. However, he knows that if he is to die, then his life should mean at least SOMETHING. He just doesn't know yet - Enter the PCs, to give him a reason. It's possible he'll find a shred of decency and nobility and join some greater quest, but it's far more likely he'll decide to make sure that he takes someone else screaming to hell with him when he goes...

************

Heldric of the Left Sword Hand; Mid level Fighter (perhaps low level fallen Paladin). Fights with sword and shield.

Heldric is a former soldier of X realm. He was an honourable, decorated soldier of lower middling rank (a sergeant perhaps). He worked and faught for his liege, but as he grew older, he found he was not suited to the rigours of leadership. Fighting was his prowess, but leading men was not an innate talent for him. Soon, as his body started to fail from repeated injuries and a life of hardship, Heldric was becoming marginalized in his military duties.

Then they retired him when he saw his 55th summer solstice. He was granted his sword and shield to keep, which are now his only posessions. He too is now homeless, living on the streets. The army was his life. Now, he's missing all that his life was, having no family, no friends, and nothing to show for his service. Eventually, Heldric turned to alcohol. Soon after that, he turned to drugs to kill his pain, and to find a solace in his loss of a reason to be. Then, he met Ufgar.

Now Heldric too is addicted to a dangerous drug. How he got started is a secret... He won't tell anybody. Heldric despises Ufgar, but Ufgar controls Heldric's supply of the drug, and as such is dependent on the lowlife for his continued existance. Heldric doesn't know he's soon for the grave, but if he did he wouldn't care - all that mattered to him is gone, and he's just wasting time until he meets his death. Perhaps if there were an opportunity to die in battle, as many of his comrades have done, with honour... He would jump at the chance, should someone want to fight aside such a man as he, weakened, dirty, disheveled and broken.

*************

Both men are crippled by this addiction, both totally alone in the world, both men totally different from one another. However, they are tied to each other through circimstance. Heldric hates Ufgar with a passion, but Ufgar is the only "connection" he has. Though Ufgar supplies Heldric with the drug now, how Heldric got started is unknown to Ufgar. Ufgar suspects that the theive's guild may have had something to do with it, taking advantage of a man in his weakest.

Really, Ufgar sees in Heldric something - perhaps what he himself could have achieved had he not lived a life of petty crime. Ufgar keeps Heldric supplied with the drug out of pity and a twisted sense of "duty", since Ufgar knows only too well the intensity of the pains that come after two days without a fix. Ufgar doesn't know how much Heldric despises him, though if he did not much would change. Heldric is too desperate, too dependant on Ufgar to ever reveal his true feelings.

Some of my most memorable NPCs:

The Man Who Spoke Wisdom - I don't remember his name, but I had an NPC warrior who was joining the party. He was a man in his early thirties, with dark hair, drooping mustaches, a suit of chain mail and a battle axe. He wasn't particularly strong, but he was your average low level fighter, teaming up with the low level party to fight some orcs. I wound up giving him a slight speech repetition issue; every time someone came up with a good idea, this NPC would pipe up, telling everybody "He speaks wisdom." He'd vary the way he said it, but the PCs caught on after a little while. The adventure was short-lived, however, and he hasn't made a reappearance yet.

Lucille - From one of my best campaigns, a slightly comical adventure where the party wound up about to set forth from the town of Feiht (Thief backwards) in search of the vile Summoner, the son of the evil necromancer they had just killed. Lucille was a well-dressed woman of minor nobility who wore an elegant blue dress. She showed up as the party was asking for warriors to help them pursue the Summoner, and pronounced herself the party's Tactical Advisor.

From then on, she journeyed with them, continually proving her worth in everything except combat. She kept a store of things on her person, from potions to strange magic items, and half of them were secreted in her bodice. She also had the bizarre ability to tell if an item was magical by licking it, and quite often, the exact magical properties as well. She was killed once (eaten by the Great White Fluffy), but she was resurrected, and continued to be the party's support wagon till the campaign finally halted.

Solace - A bandit queen, the main villain of one small adventure. She was a 14th level rogue with a vorpal greatsword, with which she managed to decapitate the party's stone giant barbarian and minotaur fighter. The survivors fled, and she earned a place in my player's memory.

Henry Diggins - A farmer turned warrior in a massive campaign who accompanied the party in many battles. He first met the PCs when they came to end the drought that had plagued his town, and stuck with them ever since, bringing an earnestness to the entire group. He actually survived several weeks of hard combat and questing before leaving entirely to start a merchant business.
