| Jerivar04-26-05, 05:12 AM | 1st, the search fuction DOES NOT WORK! Dunno if it's a problem with my computer or the site, but it just doesn't. 2nd: I apologize if this has been done before, but like I said, I can't search for it and I want to start while stuff is still fresh in my head. Okay. Being like every other one of this type of thread, this one is for the most overdone, cliqued (sp?) campaign elements. For example, Barbarians from the frigid north icelands, Halfling Rouges throwing around stones and sticks in tiny Halfling villiages, Elves being this mysterious but won't-lift-a-finger-for-someone-else race who, of course, are dying out. 1. Barbarians all always human or half-orc (or full orc for the more evil races) that come from the northern arctic region. 2. Elves are a race that is dying out, won't lift a finger for someone else, and wonder why they have no place in the modern world. 3. Elves are a magic race that predates all others. 4. Dwarves are gruff and grumpy drunks. (I mean, I know that's what they ARE, but still) 5. Evil people always wear black - robes for wizards and plate mail for warrior-types - that always have at least 3 skulls. 6. Said evil people are not bothered by the hordes of undead they command. 7. The Paladin/main character/king and the Big Bad Evil Guy (BBEG) are brothers/half-brothers separated at birth. 8. They usually don't know about their brotherhood. 9. The cleric being a shy, mild-mannered 15 year old girl (usually elf or human) 10. The best source of information is the tavern wench who serves the adventurer's drinks. 11. Every Halfling is a Rouge (if you played with some of the people my brother has, you'd become a psychopath too). 12. The dragon at the end of the adventure. If it's in a dungeon, they'll be a dragon (yeah, okay, so that's where D&D got it's name, but still...) 13. Generic duel-class half-elven Rangers. 14. Half-orc Barbarians 15. The only elves encountered are Rangers or Wizards out adventuring also. Sometimes Fighter, occasionally Cleric. 16. Gnomes are mad scientists. 17. All Dwarves are Fighters, except the ones that are Clerics of the Dwarf god. 18. Dwarves distrust arcane magic. Period. 19. Yet somehow they have no problem making a variety of magic weapons, some of which require arcane magic to produce. 20. All monks are human. I can't say i've seen a non-human monk apart from the dwarf in Neverwinter Nights. 21. All Drow are now duel-scimitar-wielding Chaotic Good Ranger rebels moving to the surface to escape the oppressive and evil ways of their culture (despite all of them being duel-scimitar-wielding Chaotic Good Ranger rebels moving to the surface to escape the oppressive and evil ways of their culture) |
| Kheldren04-26-05, 05:50 AM | 22. It will be the "End of the World" if the players fail. 23. The helpful, crotchety old PC is a dragon in disguise. 24. The BBEG is obviously evil (usually with maniacal laugh). 25. All paladins should be towering beacons of righteousness, justice and intolerance. Note - some of the racial stereotypes come from the old AD&D race class restrictions - e.g. monks being human. |
| Asciiman04-26-05, 05:50 AM | 26. This thread should be re-titled 1001 overdone 1001 threads. God I'm tired of seeing this crap. |
| Kalanth04-26-05, 05:50 AM | 22. The epic, world ending plot line where only this randomly collected group of mercenaries/adventurers can save the entire planet. 23. The female (played by the male) is the group ****, and will sleep with anyone just to get them all free room and board. 24. Dragon hoards that only consist of coin, weapons, and armor. Where is all the interesting trinkets like mirrors, goblets, and barrels of dwarven ale? 25. Dwarves make the best ale. 26. The players always end up in jail for some reason or another. 27. There is always that moment where escape becomes impossible. . . YEAH RAILROADING!! 28. The only way to destroy the BBEG is with the Sword/Axe/Dagger of Holy Might or some other randomly thought up thing that the DM made excruciatingly hard to acquire. |
| Solidcobra04-26-05, 07:44 AM | Ooh, i know..see, it's so cliché and overdone that every single game is in european-style lands during the medieval times. ^_^ Seriously... 29. The convenient dungeons filled to the brim with monsters, traps and treasure. Everywhere. 30. All races that are "usually" evil are always, 100% irredeemably supremely arch-evil. all of them. (IE: Medusae aren't always evil. they may be neutral or good too, around 10% or so...but mostly, you never face any medusa but the evil ones) 31. The über-powered townguard. See, you don't need a townguard to be level 10 just so the PCs won't go out of line. Instead, let them be level 2 warriors. And if the PCs kill them...bounty hunters are NOT level 2 warriors, bounty hunters are high-level rogue/ranger/bloodhounds. :D 32. The sickly defended store. Again, the defense is an alarm spell, a trap and a hired bouncer during the open hours. If something of worth is stolen however, bounty hunters are paid to return it. (see above) 33. The paladin will always get into a "die or break your code" scenario. All the time. 34. Druids are treehuggers. 35. All dwarves are drunkard warriors. (Sadly, eberron didn't change this, unlike most other blegh stereotypes) 36. All elves are flighty, homosexual daisy-eaters. (Changed in eberron, thank god) 37. All halflings are thieves and/or gypsies (Changed in Eberron, god i love that setting) |
| residieu04-26-05, 09:23 AM | 26. This thread should be re-titled 1001 overdone 1001 threads. God I'm tired of seeing this crap. yet inexplicably, you opened the thread to read anyway. If you don't like 1001 <whatever> threads, they're easy enough to spot and avoid. |
| Morka04-26-05, 09:48 AM | 38. Dwarves are living in subterranean cities/mines, at best in mountains. 25. Dwarves make the best ale. 39. While ale use to be made of hop, which comes from barley, no one seems to wonder how the underground dwarves manage to make the best ale... |
| Santrilla04-26-05, 09:50 AM | Look at my sig for information about the search function. And the 1001 adventure ideas thread has now begun anew ONCE A DAY over the past week. Go back a few pages and add to the other one, please. |
| residieu04-26-05, 12:23 PM | And the 1001 adventure ideas thread has now begun anew ONCE A DAY over the past week. Go back a few pages and add to the other one, please. This isn't really an adventure ideas thread, it's an overused ideas thread, so adding to the other thread would not be appropriate. 40. Evil versions of good creatures have dark skin. Even if they spend their lives deep underground where most other creatures lose pigmentation entirely. |
| twad04-26-05, 04:08 PM | 41- alignments are absolutes. No matter the reasons, the background, or wathever. Good = irreprochable, neutral = whack him a few time to make him stay in the right path, evil= must die, horribly. |
| Asciiman04-26-05, 07:11 PM | yet inexplicably, you opened the thread to read anyway. If you don't like 1001 <whatever> threads, they're easy enough to spot and avoid. I opened the thread to toss in my 2 cents. I didn't randomly click on it and then curse myself for not realizing it. |
| Jerivar04-26-05, 07:11 PM | 26. This thread should be re-titled 1001 overdone 1001 threads. Yeah, sorry about it and all, but this does serve a purpose - to help me out with some campaign-setting issues. 42. All evil monsters have red eyes. 43. All artifacts, no matter what their power, can be destroyed by a red dragon's breath. 35. All dwarves are drunkard warriors. (Sadly, eberron didn't change this, unlike most other blegh stereotypes) 36. All elves are flighty, homosexual daisy-eaters. (Changed in eberron, thank god) 37. All halflings are thieves and/or gypsies (Changed in Eberron, god i love that setting) Dear god I'm sick of those last two. |
| LordHell04-26-05, 08:03 PM | 44. People who constantly complain about racial stereotypes - yet racial stereotypes never effect their game. They also probably have a character who has 6 different classes (none of them core), 9 different PrCs, a race with 12 templates, 4 different quater-races (one of them Drow), and 6 genders. These people are likely to throw together the most unlikely class combinations so they don't appear 'cliche' - yet - they are the ones who are 'cliche' themselves. |
| Deflare04-26-05, 09:15 PM | 45) The party lives in the huge, mighty kingdom of the good king and queen, which is threatened by the tiny nation of the crotchety old evil dude due to the aquisition of a very powerful item. 46) King/Queen= good, rebels= bad. End of story. 47) Rebels= good, King/Queen= bad. End of story. 48) All good people are insanely attractive, as are all evil women. Evil men are all old and shriveled. 49) Any little old lady is either a demon or a good dragon; apparently, they make up the entire granny population. 50) No matter what the Charisma score of the BBEG is, he (the main bad guy is never a woman; women are alway assistants and sub-bosses) has a huge hoard of brainless followers willing to die for him. |
| Adrez Nesnsid11-12-06, 10:45 AM | 48) All good people are insanely attractive, as are all evil women. Evil men are all old and shriveled. Actually, often evil women in fantasy stories are ugly old crones, and evil men are young and suave (or at least appear to be). |
| AidanPryde11-12-06, 01:30 PM | Yeah, sorry about it and all, but this does serve a purpose - to help me out with some campaign-setting issues. Exactly. I find the majority of these 1001 threads useful. |
| Aryxbez11-12-06, 01:52 PM | 51) A Collosal red dragon as the BBEG 52)BBEG gains godhood by some artifact or ritual 53)PCs must save the world |
| lordalm11-12-06, 03:24 PM | 38. Dwarves are living in subterranean cities/mines, at best in mountains. 39. While ale use to be made of hop, which comes from barley, no one seems to wonder how the underground dwarves manage to make the best ale... Shrooms!!!! |
| lordalm11-12-06, 03:30 PM | Well I personally found it a hilarous read. I can't spell. I am playing a paladin in the Wyvern Crowyn download for NW. I steal stuff all the time..... |
| Need_A_Life11-12-06, 04:03 PM | 54. There's always at least one tavern in town 55. The tavern always contains a minimum of 1 dwarf 56. The tavern usually has a mysterious cloaked stranger in the corner 57. There's always a table in the corner 58. You meet in a tavern. 59. Criminal contacts are found in the tavern. 60. The owner of the tavern is never upset that heavily armed people enter rudely, hardly ever order anything and scare off customers. |
| lordalm11-12-06, 04:23 PM | 61. The adventure always, always starts in town inn/tavern/bar. |
| Cryforge11-12-06, 04:46 PM | 50) No matter what the Charisma score of the BBEG is, he (the main bad guy is never a woman; women are alway assistants and sub-bosses) has a huge hoard of brainless followers willing to die for him. Actually, in my campaign setting, the biggest evil organization in history is and has been ruled by women for the past four centuries. However, the second part (about brainless followers) is certainly true. 62. The evil villain had some sort of rivalry with one of the PC's mentors. 63. The BBEG lives in some sort of enormous evil fortress that entire armies cannot destroy, but that simple adventurers can enter with little trouble. 64. The mayor is actually one of the cultists that secretly control the city. 65. Evil dragons chatting with adventurers before they fight. 66. Devils being the evil allies of all lawful BBEGs. 67. Demons being the evil allies of all chaotic BBEGs. |
| Mordayn11-12-06, 04:51 PM | 68. Every npc' girl the party meets are always extremely attractive 69. All wizards wear robes and carry a staff 70. All male wizards have beards 71. Every creature instinctively know how much gold every magical item is worth 72. The blacksmith is always a dwarf 73. Halflings are the best chefs 74. Every wizard knows magic missile |
| byakuganbrawler11-12-06, 04:53 PM | 68.every holy place having a corrupt high priest who tricks into bringing him crap 69. dwarven holy water (ale stupids) |
| YamiSouru11-12-06, 05:09 PM | 75: The common adventurer makes a trained soldier look like a child. 76: In no way shape or form is there ANY kind of teamwork in a average adventureing party. 77: No adventurer is sane unless they are some obscure race that shouldnt exist |
| lordalm11-12-06, 05:15 PM | 76: In no way shape or form is there ANY kind of teamwork in a average adventureing party. Amen, brother, amen. |
| Halo_Light11-12-06, 05:16 PM | 51) A Collosal red dragon as the BBEG 52)BBEG gains godhood by some artifact or ritual 53)PCs must save the world Crap! I was going to use #52. Thanks for crushing my little hopes Aryxbez. Anyway #78: No matter how unknown the pc's are, the King and his brother choose the adventurers over thier own troops to retrieve some extremely important treasure. |
| Morrowner11-12-06, 05:26 PM | 79 "Bug hunts" are stupid yet killing ill conceived and utterly forgettable Dragons is what the game is all about. 80 Gilgamesh Syndrome: All women characters are matrons or sluts or slutty matrons. 81 Characters quest for riches though past level 10 they are provided with enough cash to buy and control large cities. 82 Group race and ideology compatability doesn't matter at all. CG Thri-keen Dervishes, LN Anthropomorphic Walrus Storm Lords, CN Kobold Rogues and N deep dwarf Druids walk hand in hand and nobody thinks twice about it. |
| equilibrium1711-12-06, 05:31 PM | 38. Dwarves are living in subterranean cities/mines, at best in mountains. 39. While ale use to be made of hop, which comes from barley, no one seems to wonder how the underground dwarves manage to make the best ale... No, no, no. Learn yer beer facts, 'm friend. Today, "Pure" beer, that confirming to the German Purity laws of the Reinheitsgebot (whether it be Ale or Lager) may contain only these 4 ingredients: 1. Barley. Mostly malted and roasted; sometimes a bit of unmalted and roasted for additional flavor in certain styles. Barley contributes the fermentable sugars, as well as unfermentable carbohydrates and fiber to the beer, and also the malt and grain flavor elements. 2. Hops. Hops are techincally a flower, a close relative of hemp, and contribute bitter, herbal and floral elements to the flavor. 3. Yeast. Little microoganisms that turn the sugar from the malted barley into alcohol. Also contribute various flavor elements. 4. Water. I trust I don't need to explain this one. If you're not an uptight German, Beer can also be made with Grains other than barley. Today, Wheat, Rye, Oatmeal and Rice are commonly seen in commercial beers. Historically, Millet, Quinoa, and various other carbohydrate sources were used by various cultures at various times. Also worth noting that no one had any idea what yeast was until the 18th Century. It occurred naturally in the environment, fell into the beer, and was considered part of the "Magic" that made beer and wine. Also, the use of hops in beer did not really become standardized until the 16th Century. Before the 16th Century, people used all sorts of things as "bittering agent" instead of hops, and some are still used in specialty beers today -- In colonial america, they used fresh spruce clippings because they had no hops. In europe Europe Bitter Orange peel, and various other spices and herbs were used in various places at various times. Also worth noting that, while Dwarven Caves would be a crappy place to grow grain and/or flowers/herbs needed as beer ingredients, they would make a GREAT place to actually do the brewing and fermenting -- one of the critical things you need to make good beer is a controlled environment, with minimal airflow and constant temperature. This is exactly why in the days before mechanical HVAC, may beers were brewed and conditioned in caves (where do you think they got the idea that cave-dwelling dwarves made beer?) In summary, Hops ≠ Barley. Some beers don't have hops or barley at all, though they all have grain and some kind of bitter herb. Caves might not be a great place to grow grains or herbs needed to make beer, but they're a great place to brew it. A cave-dwelling culture that traded mined metals with surface cultures for grains and herbs, and then made great beers in their caves, is very plausible. Regards, An avid beer nut and homebrewer. |
| Kaligrad11-12-06, 05:52 PM | 26. The players always end up in jail for some reason or another. This one creeps me out. I don't think I've played any video game RPG that didn't have at least one part where the PC's got captured. Also, there are 4 unaccounted for. 86-317: Everything on the Evil Overlord List (http://www.eviloverlord.com/lists/overlord.html). |

| Adrez Nesnsid11-13-06, 08:34 PM | 84.) The Elves are, for some inexplicable reason, (effectively) just as tall as humans are. I honestly don't know where the hell people got the idea that elves are supposed to be just as tall as humans (I mean, presumably the idea is one of the many things held over from the first edition of D&D, which was of course almost completely plagarized from Lord of the Rings, but that still leaves the question of why the bloody hell Tolkien thought that ANYTHING upwards of five feet would be a good height for an elf. I'm thinking that maybe there weren't any good sports teams to be joined in the undying lands and so all of the elves' basketball players stayed or something....) |
| residieu11-13-06, 08:54 PM | but that still leaves the question of why the bloody hell Tolkien thought that ANYTHING upwards of five feet would be a good height for an elf. Before Tolkien, elf could apply to any number of different creatures. After including two short races, he probably decided he wanted something more man-sized, or taller even. Otherwise we'd have the worse cliche, that all non-humans are short. |
| Delfedd11-13-06, 10:00 PM | 348) Dwarves weild Axes. WHY? OK Point 1) Axes are Generally used for felling trees. Point 2) Dwarves Generally live underground. Point 3) Dwarves rarely encounter trees. 349 Cultures rarely make very much sense. |
