| Herald@Large06-21-06, 05:35 PM | The first question to ask, with a town or city, is "Why is it there?" Don't just plunk a town down in the middle of nowhere. It needs a reason to be where it is. Forested area? Probably a logging town. Sawmill, lumberyard, woodworker shops, cooper (makes barrels). Teamster to transport goods. Near a lake? Probably a fishing town. Smokehouse, fish drying racks, net racks, boatyard/marina. Plains? Possibly a cattle center (think American Old West & cattle drives). Slaughterhouse, butchers, smokehouse, drying racks for jerky, tanners, leatherworkers, boneworkers, glue manufacture, horn carving. If it's sheep, that means shearing, baling up fleeces, spinners & weavers & dyers. Seaside? Is there a harbor? That means ship-building stuff. Lumberyards, sail manufacture, ropeworks. Storehouses & warehouses. Food preparation. Near a mine? What are they mining? Iron? Precious metals? Gemstones? Assayer's office, metal refinery, metalworkers' shops, jewelers. Farming community? Silos, barns, mill, threshing yard. But the first thing to do is decide *why* this town is there. Then go from there. |
